I think the bark is still alive even on the closeup ones. To paraphrase Monty Python, it's not dead yet!

It's probably not getting better, though.

Isn't the bark as dead as the wood? I think only the cambium lives.

But nobody knows what kind of trees they are....bummer.

True. I should have said that I think that there's still living tree in the bits that still have bark.

Above I posted oaks. We were in an oak hammock. Outside of that there were some pine, but I did not photograph them.

Oak...hmm. Could be... live, swamp, white or California white. Really interesting wood grain, I'd love to see some quarter sawn.

But anyway, the shapes are bizarre ....make really nice pictures....rather spooky under a moon.
