Everybody: never never never never "shoot to wound." There's a shorter way to say that: miss. Fobble already knew the answer. It was in her first sentence, and in her last one. I wouldn't have put that bit in at all, having decided long ago how I would have to be to handle such a crisis.
It's a legal lethal-self-defense situation where the perpetrator
must stop what he is doing, or innocents bleed and die. Perp's survival becomes secondary in these situations. It's also rather likely if it's a pistol you're using.
It's tough enough getting a center or above-center (pulmonary triangle) hit when you're
trying to shoot there. Trying to shoot someplace else means you've got a loose slug sailing down the street, and likely no bad guys down there for it to fetch up in. That's called being irresponsible with deadly force.
So avoid thinking that way, and you'll be a better citizen.
