He's at it again

As you might remember from last year, I'm nuts enough to BBQ in the dead of (almost) winter. Did I mention it's snowing?

This year I am cooking two pork butts ~ 9 lbs each. I want them finished by 4pm tomorrow, so they went on the smoker at 10pm tonight. I just checked them at 11:45pm - temps are looking good.

The wood is a combination of cherry and pecan.

Since I'll be sleeping through part of the cook, I figured a BBQ pad was a good idea.

I don't think you're nuts at all, dar. The best barbecue I ever attended was in January in a town 250 km south-east of Moscow. Those who were drinking beer had to put their glasses on the barbie to keep the beer from freezing, and those of us on vodka enjoyed that oily consistency that it gets to at low temperatures. Temperature of the air, around -25 or so ...
Have a lovely time!

I finally let it go as it would at 3. It's still there. It's starting to look and smell really yummy. I'll get pics next time I open the lid.

Drat. In all the excitement I forgot to take pictures.

It was delicious and the choir party was a success.

Gotta get some sleep now. I've got some serious sleep debt to pay for.

I was channeling this -- but not overly concerned about my coolness quotient. It has always been terminally low.

It has been in the 20's at night here, and thank God none of that snow stuff. But I BBQ in these temps all the time. The only difference is that the fire has to be hotter and the window for cooking is short. You have to use a bit more coals than usual. Note: this is not the same as long slow smoker cooking like dar did.
