Eric Holder releases 9 secret documents from Bush administration

Secret legal opinions issued by the Bush administration lawyers after the September 11, 2001 attacks were among the nine that were released and disclosed publicly by the U.S. Department of Justice on Monday March 2, 2009.

In a Department of Justice Press Release announcing this action, Eric Holder the current U.S. Attorney General is quoted as saying: "Americans deserve a government that operates with transparency and opennes...it is my goal to make OLC [Office of Legal Counsel] opinions available when possible while still protecting national security information and ensuring robust internal executive branch debate and decion-making."

2001 Bush legal memo allowed ‘First Amendment speech and press rights’ to be ’subordinated.’

Yesterday, Attorney General Eric Holder released several Bush administration Office of Legal Counsel memos, which show the astonishing extent to which the administration expanded its wartime powers. An October 2001 memo from John Yoo, for example, states that the “Fourth Amendment would not apply” for domestic military operations. The memo also restricted basic First Amendment rights:

In perhaps the most surprising assertion, the Oct. 23, 2001, memo suggested the president could even suspend press freedoms if he concluded it was necessary to wage the war on terror. “First Amendment speech and press rights may also be subordinated to the overriding need to wage war successfully,” Yoo wrote in the memo entitled “Authority for Use of Military Force to Combat Terrorist Activity Within the United States.”

“Freedom of speech is integral to a free society,” President Bush said in May 2008. After reading the memos, Harpers’ Scott Horton wrote, “We may not have realized it at the time, but in the period from late 2001-January 19, 2009, this country was a dictatorship.”

...Among the documents from the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) is a 2001 memo declaring that in terrorism cases the military may conduct searches in the United States without a warrant if approved by the president...

I thought everyone whose head isn't so far up their ass they need to open their mouths to see where they are going already knew that this was an inside job. You're preaching to the choir Sugarpop. Those who think the boogey man under the bed did this wouldn't believe it if the perps came clean on national TV.

Don't forget the Japanese soldiers who kept it up for decades after the war because they couldn't wrap their heads around the idea that Japan would ever surrender.

I posted it because some people kept saying all of this stuff was speculation and coming from people who were just trying to make trouble and play partisan politics. More will be revealed as more documents are released, but this is bad, and SHOULD wake some people out of their sleep.

Funny. I don't remember hearing you complain when it was republicans doing it. At least he is trying to do things to benefit the majority of people in THIS country. And he will probably have a balanced budget, or closer to one than we had when Bush left, in 4 years. give him a chance why don't you.

Why do you love them more than you love America?

At the current rate of spending we will have a much larger deficit, unprecedented in fact.

Yep. I think they're having a contest. Bush and the GOP congress spend big, dems have to spend bigger.

PREDICTION: The republicans run Bernard Ebbers next time around. They cannot allow this challenge to their spending prowess to go unanswered.

Obama is also doing things to cut spending though. We HAVE to spend a lot now, we have no choice, because of this recession, which Obama did not create. He inheritied it. Eventually though the cuts will balance out the spending. We have to be patient and give him time.

Wait? Give him a chance? What fun is that? Much more funner to echo Limbaugh bullshit, predict the sky will fall, speak for the "po folks" (but not hang out with them), and whine because every fucking thing in Washington hasn't changed.
