Mar 28, 2009: Pink Elephant

Wolf told me she'd seen a pink elephant.
Well, we know Wolf loves her some mead.

And I know she's got toy/stuffed critters, but mostly mooses.

So I thought maybe she saw a tourist trap, or maybe a commercial promotion?

But it turns out she did see a pink elephant... and so did the BBC.

Quote:
Experts believe it is probably an albino, which is an extremely rare phenomenon in African elephants.
I should think that the herd would be awed, and make him/her the King/Queen of the herd... maybe all the herds.
But it turns out it's not a good thing.

Quote:
He said that the condition might make it difficult for the calf to survive into adulthood.
"What happens to these young albino calves remains a mystery," said Dr Chase.
"Surviving this very rare phenomenon is very difficult in the harsh African bush. The glaring sun may cause blindness and skin problems."
However, he told BBC News that there might be a ray of hope for the pink calf as it already seemed to be learning to adapt to its condition.
"Already the two-to-three-month-old calf seems to be walking in the shade of its mother.
"This behaviour suggests it is aware of its susceptibility to the harsh African sun, and adapted a unique behaviour to improve its chances of survival."
He added: "I have learned that elephants are highly adaptable, intelligent and masters of survival."
You go, pinky!

Here is the struggle of the conceit of man. Should we "rescue" him from the harsh African sun, or let him "struggle" to survive? Should we interfere, based on our "superior" knowledge, or let nature take its course? He can't walk in the shade of his mother forever.

No, because we don't know shit.
Sun exposure prior to diagnosis is associated with improved survival in melanoma patients: results from a long-term follow-up study of Italian patients.

Sunlight may prevent cancer, study says

I don't think so, Shel. I mean, "Two in the grey, one in the stink" just lacks a certain cache, you know?

Somewhat off topic

A long, long time ago me and my friend Mike were sitting on a bench on our town square. At 2:45 AM. When a convertible pink Cadillac ElDorado drives by pulling a flat trailer. On this trailer was the fucking twin to this pink elephant, horn-rimmed glasses and all, in its trunk it's holding a giant martini with an olive in it the size of a basketball. Did I mention we were absolutely sloshed? We watched the spectacled spectacle go by in silence. Then Mike calmly turned to me and said "I didn't see a goddamned thing." True story.

I wonder if this the same one (trunk is in right position)? How many can there be???

I was out on a remote dirt mining road that was 40 miles long and a dead end. It was late October and lightly snowing. This was the western boarder of the Yukon Territory. There was six inches of snow layering everything. I crawl out of my down bag and open the back of my camper shell at 9 in the morning. As I gaze out on the spectacular panoramic view of the local mountain range, this pink Cadillac El Dorado convertible with the top down and white upholstery goes susshing by. There was a blond gal sitting in the passenger seat with little more than one would wear indoors. I remember it all very vividly. It was a most unpredictable and truly surreal sight.
