QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS SITE

UToad,

does this program allow any way of saving a link to a particular post for future reference?

Having trouble getting images to link into a post lately. Is it me?

There is a way but only if you search for the post.

lumberjim 12-23-2003 07:50 PM

no, i mean once you see a post, can you "dogear" that post for future ref, or must you remember the topic and hunt for it each time?

Undertoad 12-23-2003 08:00 PM

Not easily. This is your post:

http://cellar.org/showthread.php?postid=70727#post70727

The anchor tags and stuff are in the code, but that link is not generated by anything except a search. There's no link on the page you could easily drag and drop or something like that.

lumberjim 12-23-2003 08:04 PM

so i should create a word doc, copy the location, create an index by topic, then give the post a name i'd remember, etc..... that'll do, i guess. thanks, i should have thought of that.

lumberjim 12-23-2003 08:07 PM

ok, one more thing:

i use netscape 7.whatever. whne i right click, i can view page info which seems to give me tha last post id on that page. how do i get the specific post id for a particular post?

Undertoad 12-23-2003 08:27 PM

If you mouseover the "quote" button and have your settings set to let you see the URL in your status bar, you could get the post number that way.

your a pretty fucking helpful guy, toad, thanks again.

Be a real man and download Moz 1.5 :)

lumberjim 12-26-2003 06:49 PM

toad, is there a setting that allows email based posts? as in, when a new message comes in on a subscribed thread, you can read the message and reply to it from within your email program.

moz.....mozilla? this is a different browser? what's so manly about that? does the skin have hair on it or something? can you die it?

;)

no, really, what does it do that's better than netscape?

Undertoad 12-26-2003 07:22 PM

No such feature as email-to-post.

Undertoad 12-26-2003 07:34 PM

Mozilla is like Netscape only continuing to be updated, and much improved with cool new features, and not containing all the spammy stuff.

Firebird is like Mozilla except it's just the browser part. If you don't need the email part, the editor part, or the chat part, just get Firebird. But know ye that Firebird is a pre-release product and doesn't come with an installer and stuff.

I like Firebird. Tabbed browsing is great. I've got Opera installed, but while I miss some of its features, something makes me prefer Firebird.

insoluble 12-26-2003 10:45 PM

Firebird is also cool b/c you can block images from certain servers ie: ads

ok, so I downloaded and installed Mozilla 1.5. it appears to be a skin for my existing netscape. it has all of my bookmarks, my mail settings, my mail itself, etc....

the navigation buttons are even the same.

Undertoad 12-29-2003 08:58 AM

If you want it to look different, and not just work better, go to View -> Apply Theme. Netscape 7 was based on Mozilla 1.0 (roughly, I can't remember).

lumberjim 12-29-2003 09:45 AM

DOES it work better? the install and download were pretty quick......it's not just a slightly different interface that uses netscapes nuts and bolts? the features all seem the same....( my IM doesn't work in mozilla, tho). Are the two programs owned by the same people?

Undertoad 12-29-2003 09:51 AM

Did your Netscape have tabbed browsing?

Go to Edit->Preferences->Tabbed Browsing and check the boxes "Load links in background" and "Middle-click...on links on a web page". Start middle-clicking or ctrl-clicking on links.

Yup.

i like that. i take it mozilla does the same thing?

Undertoad 12-29-2003 10:50 AM

Yes, well, Netscape isn't going to be developed any longer, so you basically go Mozilla suite from now on. Mozilla isn't really owned by anyone. It's developed mostly by a foundation, Netscape gave it the initial boost of people and money and such IIRC.

Mozilla developers have no other goal than to build a great browser, and so in three years of development from scratch they've so far built something better than IE.

lumberjim 12-29-2003 12:00 PM

i'll use mozilla at home and stick with netscape at work....after i have gotten used to them, i'll let you know which one i like better.

thanks for the advice, once again, ya helpful fuck!

Undertoad 12-29-2003 12:16 PM

S'ok! I love Mozilla, and I think Firebird, once it reaches maturity and becomes "Mozilla Browser", will easily dominate the world.

lumberjim 01-13-2004 09:04 PM

THIS MAY BE A STUPID QUESTION

WHAT THE FUCK DOES "BLOG" MEAN?

elSicomoro 01-13-2004 09:32 PM

It's short for "web log"...a web diary of sorts. The Manifestos are a blog, more or less. But unlike standard blogs, I let slobs like you reply to my posts.

dar512 01-13-2004 09:34 PM

Short for web log.

Does anyone have a list of the different "ranks" that exist and after how many messages do you reach which of these?

lumberjim 01-15-2004 05:17 PM

are you referring to the title that appears under your name? ie. rapscallion?

Undertoad 01-15-2004 08:07 PM

never before revealed.

i'm a huntanpeck typist and there's nothing as infuriating as having typed a fairly long post only to look up and realize that it's in caps. i wish there was a way to convert caps like you can copy and paste and what not.

new question

UT,

the search engine is killing me. I either get this:

Quote:

vBulletin Message
The search term you specified (pot) is under the minimum word length (4) and therefore will not be found. Please make this term longer.

If this term contains a wildcard, please make this term more specific.

or this:
Quote:

Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms
when i put little words in to search for. The method to it eludes me. The word i had searched for when i got no hits was "you" . Sometimes if i put multiple words in and one of the words is 3 letters, i get the first error, too.

can you remove the minimum word length parameter?

Undertoad 01-22-2004 11:48 PM

I'll change it to 3 but it will take time to take effect. I forget how this thing decides when to index.

lumberjim 02-05-2004 06:17 PM

toad,
i was sniffing around vbulletin.com, and noticed that there is an avatar feature on their demo. does this iteration of vb allow avatars? if so, have you decided NOT to use them?

Undertoad 02-05-2004 06:32 PM

I decided not to use them because, in my opinion, they make any forum look like utter crap.

lumberjim 02-05-2004 06:37 PM

right

good call

BrianR 02-06-2004 11:14 AM

What's an "avatar"?

wolf 02-06-2004 11:24 AM

A picture that displays under your user title.

There are pre-set avatars in vBulletin, or you can upload your own (sometimes there are preset requirements by the sysadmin for using avatars ... minimum number of posts or whatnot.)

If you want to see some in use, go to glocktalk.com or politicsforum.com

juju 02-06-2004 12:36 PM

Sometimes I just don't understand people. I mean, I'm trying to freaking <b>read</b> here! I personally find avatars to be incredibly distracting.

wolf 02-06-2004 01:20 PM

It's a vanity thing. People try to outdo each other with increasingly clever animated avatars, or want their picture up, or whatnot.

It's kind of like buddy icons in AIM. Either you use 'em, or you don't.

FileNotFound 02-06-2004 03:41 PM

I hate avatars and image signatures.

I try to turn both off on boards. If I cannot then I rarely visit these boards. (Some of you proably will see that as a reason to have the images 8-P )

Three reasons:

1) They are distracting.

2) They take up screen space.

3) Often offensive and inappropriate at work. They stick out and scream "Look at me! I'm slacking off at work!!"

The thing I like the most about the cellar is the clean look. It looks very professional, not at all childish like many other sites.

Plus I feel that the lack of signatures and avatars helps keep stupid people who are attracted to such things away from the site.

I was on a forum where half the fun was seeing who could come up with the best and most creative avatar. There were a few PhotoShop experts there and would come up with some whacked out stuff.

elSicomoro 02-16-2004 10:50 PM

We don't do avatars here...too much clutter. We do have a Photoshop forum though.
