elSicomoro 07-03-2007 06:51 PM

Oh, so it's gonna be like that, Mr. Poopy Pants?

Cloud 07-03-2007 06:57 PM

huh. Sometimes I think the collective mental age here is -- older than that.

A LOT older!

elSicomoro 07-03-2007 07:18 PM

Sorry, Cloud...it doesn't offset the times when it is 3. :)

Urbane Guerrilla 07-13-2007 02:21 AM

Except maybe on average, or median, or something.

rkzenrage 07-13-2007 02:27 AM

If I scratch myself then type, can you smell it?

Uisge Beatha 07-13-2007 07:39 AM

Whew! :whofart: Man, that's rude.

Oh, um, sorry. It wasn't you, rk; I just farted.

I never did understand the Yahoo Slurp Spider. How come Google, the best search engine, doesn't have spiders running around? Someone in another thread brought up a good point, if you check out "who's online" you can find some interesting old threads based on what the spiders are looking at.

So, can someone explain spiders to me, and why Google doesn't have them?

Also, I noticed this morning that a spider was viewing a user profile. Why?

I also noticed the Yahoo Slurp Spider's user title is "Spider who has slurped" or something. Funny. I may change mine to "user who has used." Or, maybe not.

Uisge Beatha 07-18-2007 10:10 AM

As far as I can tell, someone actually registered an account under the name "Yahoo Slurp Spider." This may explain what you saw (viewing a profile), Shawnee.

xoxoxoBruce 07-18-2007 10:10 AM

Google has spiders too. The spiders keep reading the whole site, over and over, even the shit that doesn't change.

The guy that grabbed the Yahoo Slurp spider account hasn't used it in a year. He's only used his regular account 3 times since April, also.

Shawnee123 07-18-2007 10:13 AM

But how do they work? What are they for? I assume for search. Why do you never see Google spiders? I've seen Yahoo (all the time) and an occasional other one (msn maybe?) but never a Googspidey.

Are Googspidey's more stealthy?

Undertoad 07-18-2007 10:41 AM

Yahoo's system is just not very smart, is what I'm thinking. Yahoo spidering generates 8 times the number of hits that Google spidering does.

Shawnee123 07-18-2007 11:09 AM

I see. That makes sense.

But I luvs me some Google.

yesman065 07-18-2007 11:16 AM

I gotta say - I prefer google too - even though Yahoo is listed as the #1 most viewed site. (as per alexa.com)

I love my gmail too

Serious Question:
How do you intersperse images with text? As in: text, image, commentary, another image, final thought; IE how the IotD is laid out.

I've quoted posts such as this, to see how it was done, and in the case of the IotD, it's an [IMG] of an image at a Cellar URL. But, how do I attach an image to The Cellar, to be [IMG]ed in a thread? It's not on an option the attachments page.

I don't want to reference images from Photobucket, etc. I want to attach them here. Is it possible to place them anywhere other than what seems to be the default - at the very bottom of the post (after the text)?

glatt 07-20-2007 02:14 PM

UT can and probably will answer better than I can. BUt my understanding is that it's just not set up to do that. But let me see if I can get around it in a very awkward way.

This is a picture that I attached in a thread about camping. I'm linking to it here. It will hopefully show up in the body of the post.http://cellar.org/attachment.php?att...3&d=1181928813

and this is a picture I took at the Baltimore Aquarium. I attached it to a post I made in a thread about close ups.

http://cellar.org/attachment.php?att...3&d=1170178840

I have no idea how to do this without going back and finding images I had attached in previous threads. It would take some work. Maybe you could compose a post, upload an attachment and then delete the post before submitting it. Maybe the attachment would still be there and you could find it in the user cp.

Edit: I see that it didn't work. It can't be done. I used the [IMG] feature as well. Nevermind.

Undertoad 07-20-2007 02:19 PM

You can't do it with attachments. You can only do it with images that are hosted somewhere where they let you link to them.

theotherguy 07-20-2007 03:16 PM

How does the "multi-quote this message" button work? I have clicked it several times and nothing has happened. *I did check the FAQ first.

Shawnee123 07-20-2007 03:24 PM

hit multi-quote for the first (and second or third) quote you want. On the LAST quote you want, just hit the regular quote button.

theotherguy 07-20-2007 03:40 PM

Thank you.

TheMercenary 07-23-2007 10:39 AM

The Tip Jar.

Why does it only take pay pal?

How can you contribute without going through the link on the bottom?

Cicero 07-23-2007 12:02 PM

I have an I.D. 10 T going on.......
Ummm....what are the instructions for creating a poll?

Shawnee123 07-23-2007 12:57 PM

When you start a new thread, the option to post a thread is at the bottom of that page. After you click to start a new poll, and pick the number of answer options, you will have to submit that thread before you actually create the poll (hence my "testing" post, I was trying to get the steps for you. I don't think I can delete it.) Then you get to create your poll, preview it, and submit it.

Maybe buying jewelry from Katkeeper still funnels some dough his way too. And I should add that her jewelry is very very nice so you get something nice in return. My wife loves the earrings I got her. She wears them all the time.

TheMercenary 07-23-2007 01:30 PM

Well somebody pm me someplace I can contribute other than on paypal.

Rexmons 08-01-2007 12:51 PM

not really a question so much as a statement:

I just discovered the "Quick Style Chooser" drop down menu on the bottom left of the page and I have to say "The Cellar vBulletin 3 Style" is VERY NICE!

Shawnee123 08-01-2007 02:03 PM

Who are these people passerine and recuse who have been "logging in" for about 8 hours, and who never have any activity? Are we being hacked by people who look just like us? :worried:

Shawnee123 08-01-2007 05:08 PM

I was serious with that question. They're still logging in, and they were logging in yesterday.

I'm so confused!

Uisge Beatha 08-01-2007 05:35 PM

Um, well.......they're lurkers, but maybe a special kind. How about pod people lurkers?__:confused:__Would that actually be purkers?__:alien: :lurker: :alien:

Uisge Beatha 08-02-2007 08:43 AM

OK, I made my little joke last night, but now I'm with Shawnee here. The user profiles for each of these two shows last activity on Tuesday morning, yet they are constantly logging in, as per Who's Online. And they are always logging in several minutes behind the current time; it seems to keep changing to six or seven minutes behind. Do we have a way to yank somebody out of a time warp?

Shawnee123 08-02-2007 09:48 AM

i'm worried that they are furiously banging on their monitors, trying desperately to get out of the warp they have found themselves in, but in vain.

Let's help these poor souls.

Or, you could just fucking ignore me.

Uisge Beatha 08-02-2007 10:07 AM

Perhaps the Shawnee Foundation (parent organization of the Coalition for a Saner America) should run a telethon. Can we still send donations to the Crappicus address?

Shawnee123 08-02-2007 10:16 AM

Of course you can. Just don't tell the feds. I haven't done the appropriate paperwork yet.

Hey, they're gone! Fly, little ones, be free! (If we love them we let them go. If they come back to us they are ours.) ;)

yesman065 08-02-2007 11:36 AM

I believe they were helped along on their merry way - they were logging on for hours upon hours

Shawnee123 08-02-2007 11:39 AM

Yes, once someone important mentioned it. ;)

Undertoad 08-02-2007 11:58 AM

Literally over a thousand accounts were purged this morning. Most of them, at this point, are here just to get a single link in their user profile in order to spam google with their bogus sites. Most of them are from Russia or at least enter Russian email sites to validate their accounts. The problem is massive and ugly and will not go away.

I expect these are the same people who used to start a thread to spam us but are now prohibited from starting threads because they haven't posted.

Shawnee123 08-02-2007 12:14 PM

I can't even imagine what you have to do behind the scenes, UT. Thanks for all you do. I was concerned that those two were stuck or perhaps having an adverse affect on the rest of us, but I know you keep the situations well in hand.

:)

Uisge Beatha 08-02-2007 12:38 PM

Wow! Now, cleaning up is definitely good, but it does mean that everybody's share to buy Cellar Island will now be $220 instead of $165. :D

I've been having a similar problem with the Bosque for months now. Recently, I just started letting the spam accounts pile up--I've gotten 100 new users in the past 2 days. At least they can't post because I haven't activated their accounts.

Given that folks don't join the Bosque that often, I'm thinking of getting rid of the joining page, replacing it with an e-mail form request. But I have to figure out which page it is first.

Shawnee123 08-04-2007 12:04 PM

This isn't a question, just seems like a place to say this:

I am LOVIN' the Cellar right now. *does happy dance*

That is all.

BigV 10-15-2007 12:04 PM

I would like some help as to how to compose a search query where the operator is AND to search for posts with two or more terms. The default behavior is OR. I have tried AND and I have tried + and both are ignored. I have successfully used double quotes to enclose whole search strings. But the "AND" eludes me.

TIA

Undertoad 10-15-2007 01:40 PM

Go to google and use

term1 term2 site:cellar.org

That oughta do it. I don't think the built-in search includes an AND.

BigV 10-15-2007 01:49 PM

Thank you sir.

Clodfobble 10-15-2007 01:51 PM

Hey awesome, that works for three-letter words too! There have been a couple of occasions where the four-letter minimum was screwing me over.

glatt 10-15-2007 02:01 PM

Excellent tip.

This can also be used to get around the problem of trying to search for words on the Cellar that are only 3 letters long. For example "gun" gives you zero results in the Cellar's search engine, but in Google's search you get 3,970 hits.

Not that anyone should be opening old gun threads.

Edit: Spent too much time fiddling with links and Clodfobble beat me to the punch.

Thanks. I sort of took it myself. I was taking pictures during the "golden hour" and the light was perfect. I wanted one of me too, so I gave my patient wife very specific instructions on where to stand and how much to zoom in, etc. She was ribbing me about it, which made my smile more genuine.
