fuck punctuation! And *asterix's* and ellipsis...!

xoxoxoBruce 11-12-2006 02:03 PM

Got ragged on for too many commas, as pauses, and started adding ellipsis.
And smilies to annoy the nerds. ;)

Trilby 11-16-2006 10:37 AM

Hm. For some weird reason (actually, am trying to avoid studying for tomorrow's final in 17th C. Brit Lit as is mind-numbing) I am clicking around on different things here in the Cellar and clicked on "View Forum Leaders" and the message told me I didn't have clearance to view this...I thought I'd just get a list of the mods...is this James Bond stuff?

Undertoad 11-16-2006 10:42 AM

http://cellar.org/2006/insufficientpermission.jpg

I think this is because there ARE no "forum leaders". I should remove that link.

Trilby 11-16-2006 10:57 AM

OH! Thanks!

Flint 11-16-2006 10:59 AM

That vBulletin Message always hurt my feelings. What, I'm not good enough?

Happy Monkey 11-16-2006 04:00 PM

Would it be possible to add more options to the "Find Posts From" section of Advanced Search? Like multiple years?

Undertoad 11-16-2006 04:56 PM

That ought to be do-able, although keeping all the features straight when migrating from version to version is getting to be a real pain. A lot of them have to be manually migrated each time.

Happy Monkey 11-16-2006 07:03 PM

Someone (maybe tw?) mentioned looking at posts from 2002 and 2003, and I got a bit curious, but there's no easy way to do so by username. It's just a whim, so no worries if it's more hassle than it's worth

Undertoad 11-17-2006 08:46 AM

rkzenrage, please do not copy the entire body of a spam message, including the links, into another thread, making work for the moderators? Mmmkay?

Shawnee123 11-17-2006 09:08 AM

How do you embed (is that the right word) a link to a site, or another thread, covered up by a word? For example, someone will say

here

and when you click on linkable "here" you go to a site or thread?

I read the directions but I guess I'm missing something!

Thanks!

Undertoad 11-17-2006 09:19 AM

Highlight the section you want to be a link

Press the "Insert Link" button, which is the globe with a chain link on it

Insert the URL, with the http part. Hit OK.

For any feature, just quote an example to see how it was done.

Oh, simple, huh?

Flint, I don't think I understand what you just said!

footfootfoot 11-17-2006 09:52 AM

type : [url= and put the web address here] after that put your text, then finish with: /url

only put[ ] around the /url

What foot3 just posted is exactly what you would see if you QUOTED someone posting a link like you're asking about.

Shawnee123 11-17-2006 10:21 AM

Oh, I got how to do it, but I'm still not sure what you said. :3eye: No worries, my brain paths are not typical for a human.

Shawnee123 11-17-2006 10:34 AM

I prefer "Unusual"

Flint 11-17-2006 10:36 AM

I prefer "unusual" too, just ask my wife. [/attempt at dirty joke that didn't really go over as planned]

Shawnee123 11-17-2006 11:11 AM

A quiet hush fell over that particular corner of the Cellar; the crickets in the background became a cacophonous symphony of sound, while Flint sheepishly backed away.

dar512 11-20-2006 06:01 PM

Lemme try, Flint. Shawnee, if you see a post that does what you want to do, press the quote button on the lower right of the post you want to emulate. In the quoted text you'll see exactly what to type.

All the buttons at the top just insert the right text for you, but you can do it yourself if you want.

Did that get closer?

Shawnee123 11-21-2006 09:57 AM

Thanks for all your input. I got it now! (How many Shawnees does it take to embed a link?) :)

got this warning last night from Norton, any idea what it's all about? it seems I am frequently attacked from the address in question.

dar512 11-21-2006 10:51 AM

More info on Nmap Xmas scan here. Sounds like someone is looking for vulnerabilities on your system.

Undertoad 11-21-2006 10:53 AM

I think this is Norton being overaggressive. That address is the Cellar's address, and port 80 is HTTP. The "nmap Xmas scan" is sort of like knocking on doors to see if anyone's there, not very serious and it could be a mistake somebody made in the protocol.

It hurt them more than it hurt you. :p

footfootfoot 11-22-2006 12:20 AM

ha ha Shawnee123.

I"m hoping UT is right, but I wonder why the sudden problem?

xoxoxoBruce 11-22-2006 04:59 AM

This may be why a couple members have lost access at work recently? :eyebrow:

Ibby 11-28-2006 08:19 PM

Can we turn the 'show deleted posts' thing back off? theyre getting kind of annoying, to me at least, and whats the point of deleting a thread if they still stay there cluttering things up?

barefoot serpent 11-30-2006 11:13 AM

I say keep it in at least the Entertainment category. It shows just how hard our mods work to keep out the riff-raff.

rkzenrage 12-01-2006 02:03 AM

How does one use/find the ignore button/switch/thingy?

SteveDallas 12-01-2006 09:04 AM

Click the "User CP" link to go to your account settings. One of the things on the left-hand menu bar will be the Buddy/Ignore List.

rkzenrage 12-01-2006 11:34 AM

Ibby 12-03-2006 08:23 PM

Ooh, who're you ignoring? Gossip gossip gossip!

Griff 12-03-2006 08:51 PM

C'mon which one of us finally got to you?

SteveDallas 12-03-2006 08:53 PM

I hope it was me--it would be just perfect, since I explained how to find the ignore list.

Aliantha 12-03-2006 08:55 PM

I'm pretty sure it'll be me. ;)

mmmmm... symmetry

Elspode 12-04-2006 07:49 AM

Maybe its all of us? It would save a lot of time.

Flint 12-04-2006 02:23 PM

Now our deleted messages show up as a blank post, saying we deleted something there? When did that start?

xoxoxoBruce 12-04-2006 04:23 PM

When UT turned on the ability for everyone to see all the deleted spam instead of just the moderators. ;)

skysidhe 12-13-2006 12:09 PM

RE: The 24 hour bread thread.

I want to send the page to someone who is a very good cook. I saw the printable version option.

Ill just print it out. Probably the best. Thanks UT!

[edit] nevermind. I just found the email option too!

...so many tricks so little time:o

How does multi-quote work?

when you want to quote multiple posts, you just go through and click that icon on each of the posts you want to include, and they will apear in your reply ( i haven't tried anything fancy, but i'm guessing that they come in chronological order into your reply)

no, it's the order that you click the icons

Shawnee123 01-04-2007 11:39 AM

testing

Shawnee123 01-04-2007 11:40 AM

testing again

(edit) I can't get it to work. The multi-quote icon highlights, but the quotes aren't appearing (as you can see.)

What is this bozo doing wrong?

glatt 01-04-2007 11:49 AM

step one: Click the "multi-quote" button on the posts you want to quote

step two: scroll to the bottom of the thread and click on the "post reply" button.

Happy Monkey 01-04-2007 11:49 AM

You can push the http://cellar.org/images/buttons2007/quote.gif button on the last.

Here's my experience:

Just clicking multi-quote and post quick reply doesn't do anything. At all

Clicking multi-quote on the first posts and the quote button on the last quote (as HM says) adds all the quotes to an advanced mode reply that you can add your comments to.

Sundae 01-04-2007 02:32 PM

Okay - question about this site:
I know what the Ignore button does, but what is the Buddy list for?
Or is it for more cliquey sites and not really of any use here?

Undertoad 01-04-2007 02:44 PM

I think that's the case, it's more for larger sites where you can't keep track of your friends.

It doesn't apply here because here we are all buddies.

Sundae 01-04-2007 02:46 PM

I may start using it anyway. If someone annoys me I can say, "Well you're off my Buddy List, buddy!"

It will make me feel important.
