A considerable time ago, I chose the Cellar vBulletin 3 Style as my default colour scheme.

Starting today, when I click on a link in a notification Email, the page displays in ordinary Cellar.org colours.

Similarly, clicking on a Cellar link within a forum post displays it in 'Sterile For Work' mode.

It's not the end of the world, but it is slightly irritating. I've tried clearing cookies, signing in again and selecting my required style, but the behaviour detailed still persists.

Anyone else experiencing similar?

glatt 10-11-2018 03:37 PM

It's always interesting to hear how others view the cellar.

You read the celler by clicking on emails you get, huh?

Gravdigr 10-11-2018 03:57 PM

It has something to do w/the address. I get stock color scheme sometimes, and go to the address bar, and there's no www there. I put a www in there and my color scheme comes back.

Go figger.

Thread subscriptions/alerts, I guess?

Undertoad 10-11-2018 04:01 PM

It's the difference between secure (https) and non-secure (http). If you are logged in with one and someone sends you to the other, this will (still) result.

Not exclusively. My main method is to view the main page and head for subjects which catch my eye.

However, I've opted for instant Email notification of any new posts in threads I have subscribed to.

It's very useful for occasions where I have asked a question, like this one.

Crossed with replies from Gravdigr and UT.

ETA Problem is manifesting itself on my PC but not on my iPad on which I am presently posting.

I've just applied the Gravdigr method and all is right with the world.

Stranger than friction. :)

There's a Gravdigr Method™ for almost everything.

With wildly variable degrees of success and/or failure.

I've made a number of attempts to post images today, but when previewing find only text details of attachment no, file size etc.

Is anyone else having similar problems?

It works for uploaded images. Are you linking to images? Unsecured sites might pose a problem.

No, I'm uploading to the Cellar and, as far as I am aware, doing everything correctly.

I'll have another attempt in a short while but I'm not confident that things will work properly.

Watch and pray!

Carruthers 10-27-2018 12:21 PM

I've just had another attempt but no luck.

Sherlock Holmes had 'three pipe problems'.

I have three mugs of tea problems. :)

And if that doesn't sort it out...

sexobon 10-27-2018 12:40 PM

I suppose UT will have to sort it out. When I got to this page I got a warning, that precedes the URL in the address box, that it's Not Secure even though the address itself starts with https. I found that happens with some other individual threads too. Maybe that has something to do with it, or not.

I think you may be right. Have a look at my post #2406 which raises a similar point.

That problem persists but Gravdigr's solution is a good workaround.

ETA: Re my post #2046.

Not only do I get a changed colour scheme I also have to sign in again if I wish to post.
Adding www (per Gravdigr) produces the correct colour scheme and shows me as being logged in.

Undertoad 10-27-2018 02:26 PM

I've reset the error logs, can you give it another try, and post right after to say you've done it? Thanks.

Carruthers 10-27-2018 02:49 PM

Just attempted to post an image but no luck.
Tried to post another but without success.
The problem of clicking on a link within a notification Email also persists, ie wrong colour scheme and log in required.

Undertoad 10-27-2018 03:10 PM

From here it looks like you are browsing the entire site as http.

The only link that is https is the soundcloud button that appears in the quicklinks menu.

I'm getting out of my depth, I'm afraid.
Is that state of affairs a 'fixture' so to speak, or is it possible to make changes and restore the situation?

Clodfobble 10-27-2018 04:23 PM

He's talking about the website's address at the top of your browser. Which of the following does it say?

http://www.cellar.org
https://www.cellar.org
http://cellar.org
https://cellar.org

I've closed down my PC for the day (posting on iPad where the problem doesn't occur) so I'll have a look first thing tomorrow.

I use Firefox so it might be worth trying another browser and seeing how things go there.

Many thanks for the nudge in the right direction. :thumb:

xoxoxoBruce 10-27-2018 04:44 PM

Ah, that's probably why you have to sign in.

Carruthers 10-28-2018 05:22 AM

A new day has dawned and I've had time to look at what's what.

In summary it appears to be a Firefox problem.

(i) I've changed my default browser to Edge which has allowed me to upload an image to the Ships thread.

(ii) Re links in Email problem.

Up until a couple of weeks ago, links in notification Emails always opened up the page with the correct colour scheme and no necessity to sign in, even if I didn't already have the Cellar open in my browser. (I don't sign out).

Clicking on one of these links (example below) in Edge opens up the page in the same manner as Firefox once did.

http://cellar.org/showthread.php?t=4657&goto=newpost

I'm not that keen on Edge but, if it reduces the hassle factor, I'll stay with it.

Thanks everyone for help and suggestions. :thumb:

Clodfobble 10-28-2018 06:41 AM

Lools to me like the emails are giving you bad links (not bad, per se, but basically the whole internet switched a while back to using exclusively https because it's more secure) and some browsers are automatically fixing them once you're here and click on something new?

Probably never got noticed because you're the only person who gets here via email link instead of navigating to your drug fix directly like the rest of us. :)

Not strictly true, Clod!

I do like to keep a number of threads 'under observation' as it were, so the notification Emails are very handy.

However, I am more often found foraging around the board in general.

Once again, thanks for your help and observations. :thumb:

Try Chrome rather than Edge.

What Bruce said. It's a lot better plus you get google search.

Google can be made the default search engine on Edge too. That's what I did and I use Edge all the time without problems.

Carruthers 10-31-2018 05:54 AM

Forgive me for going over already well trodden ground, but the problem of uploading images persists.

Last night I used Firefox and Chrome without success so this morning I've tried Edge and IE, also with conspicuous lack of success.

The whole thing is rather bizarre. I'm no IT professional, but generally I manage to navigate my way around problems without leaving too much havoc in my wake.

Advice and suggestions (preferably not rude) will be gratefully received.

I don't think it's me. However I shall be suitably contrite if it is! :D

Clodfobble 10-31-2018 07:10 AM

Add a letter s to your http link and try again.

Carruthers 10-31-2018 07:25 AM

Thanks for getting back to me!

I tried adding the 's' to http in front of cellar.org but, unfortunately, that didn't help when I tried a couple of minutes ago.

The image I was attempting to upload is in My Docs.

Please forgive my brevity but I'm in the middle of preparing lunch and just dashed in here for a quick look! :thumb:

ETA

I've just had a further attempt at adding 's' after http and I've been able to post an image!
As noted, I was a bit rushed in my previous attempt so perhaps attention to detail suffered.
BTW, it's Post #247 in the 'Horses' thread.

I think that you have hit the nail on the head, Clod. Many thanks!

Further edit:

I've just looked at my Bookmarks and found that the address for the site lacked the 's'.
I've now amended it to https://www.cellar.org/ so with luck the problem won't manifest itself again!

Thank you for your forbearance of my ineptitude. :)

Sadly I spoke too soon.

Flushed with the success of posting an image in the 'Horses' thread I went ahead with a follow up to the Ulysse/Virginia collision in 'Ships'.
I'd collected quite a bit of info and finished off with an upload of the container ship under way.
Except that the upload wouldn't play the game.
At that point I gave up.
Heaven knows what it is going on...

sexobon 10-31-2018 05:14 PM

You said that the bookmark lacked the 's' so you amended it. Did you do that by going to the web page https://www.cellar.org/ and saving it to your bookmarks/favorites again?

No, I amended the bookmark properties box, to the best of my recollection.
I'm pretty sure it had the desired effect.
I'm posting on my iPad at the moment but I'll check my PC in the morning and get back to you.

Many thanks,

C.

xoxoxoBruce 10-31-2018 07:13 PM

You said you couldn't post that ship picture. Did it refuse to take the picture or everything went as normal except the picture didn't show up in the post?

I previewed the entire post but the ship picture didn't show, just the text description, ie the file name, size, etc.

I had several attempts to upload the picture but none appeared in the preview so I abandoned the effort without posting.

In similar circumstances in the past I found that the image wouldn't appear when I actually submitted the post, just the text as above.

Hope that makes sense. It's early!

Update...

Back on my PC now. I deleted the Cellar bookmark and re-instated it with the https version.

I've tried another image upload and this is what I get on the preview:

Attachment 65434

Edit:

Dammit! The preview shows the file information but the image appears in the post!
That never happened until recently. I was always able to see the complete final version of the post in the preview pane.

The words 'live with it' spring to mind.

I couldn't have helped anyway, but, I misunderstood your problem. I haven't seen the actual pic in the preview for ages and ages.

I asked about it a good long while back, but nothing came of it.

It fixed itself, but, then reverted back to no pic in preview. Like you said, I've been 'living with it.'

ETA: Damn. I've been living with it for 6 yrs?

It's something of a shame that the finished article can't be previewed in its entirety, so I shall just have to learn to 'fly blind'.

xoxoxoBruce 11-01-2018 11:01 PM

It should show in the preview.
