OK. I was poking around the "who's online" link, because I get a kick out of what guests are looking at. Apparently somebody somewhere is linking to an attachment in that square melon IOTD thread a while ago, and a lot of people are looking at it. The erect nipple thread is getting more traffic again.

And then as I scrolled down, I saw this!

BigV 04-01-2011 01:45 PM

heh

to relieve your uncomfortable symptoms, take two bromides and call me in the morning. I suggest these two:

"Power corrupts" and "Ignorance is bliss"

Both are very good points. I'll be mindful. Thanks for the reminder.

Cloud 04-04-2011 05:17 PM

Do we need both a "technology" (Computing, programming, science, electronics, telecommunications, etc.); AND an "internet" (Web sites, web development, email, chat, bandwidth, the net and society) forum?

Maybe there was a clear distinction way back in early cellar days, but now? When your computer is your tv, and your phone is your --everything.

My suggestion would be to consolidate.

Undertoad 04-04-2011 10:28 PM

I agree, the net forum doesn't get much traffic these days either

any objections

DanaC 04-05-2011 05:31 AM

None from here. I never know whether to put things in internet or entertainment, since most of my 'internet' stuff is actually online ent.

infinite monkey 04-05-2011 07:10 AM

Just make a new one called Teh Interwebz. We will find all we need right there at our fingertips.

Why do we need home base and nothingland? The same types of threads go there. And we should combine sports and relationships, because sports really is about forging relationships. And music should go with quality images, it's all art.

Well would you just look at that? IM is being a smahtass. ;)

monster 04-05-2011 08:28 AM

no objections here. The guys are silent though. I wonder if they feel losing technology to teh interwebz is an assault on their manhood, like losing their man cave to a guest bedroom....? :p:

Pete Zicato 04-05-2011 08:36 AM

Technology is more than the internet. Even more than computers.

Some other recent tech topics we've covered:

Robot Hummingbirds
Rocket Packs
Gravity Control by Laser
The end of Kodachrome
more...

I don't mind if you delete Internet, but leave Technology alone, please.

monster 04-05-2011 08:40 AM

interwebs could go in technology, though? Or is that like a sewing machine table in the corner of the cave?

Cloud 04-05-2011 10:10 AM

not saying the two are exactly equivalent, just that they are related and could be logically consolidated at this point. Just a thought I had.

infinite monkey 04-27-2011 05:52 PM

Attention Sundae!

I love your name. It looks good on you. :)

So I'm thinking SG as a nickname might go out of fashion, and S is just too short,

What are your thoughts on Sun? You are very sunshiney. ;)

monster 04-27-2011 05:57 PM

What about Undae? Undies to friends.....

sexobon 04-27-2011 06:53 PM

Can we upgrade the troll removal process to:

1. EVERYONE sends troll a friendship request.

2. Flying Fickle Finger Of Fate award gets posted to troll's final thread.

3. Troll is banned.

Attachment 32134

monster 04-27-2011 06:54 PM

Is it possible to (temporarily) prevent a user from starting new threads? For their own good, in order to prevent them becoming intolerably irritating to everybody except the morbidly charitable?

And perhaps the mods might consider moving just a couple of threads to more appropriate forums (like relationships and creative thingummajiggy), as a demonstration? I know this is not generally the done thing, but maybe in this case it might be for the greater good?

or.... on the other extreme, didn't Jim and Syc used to have their own forums/forae? Perhaps that's the answer

morethanpretty 04-28-2011 01:00 AM

She is a Sundae Woman now! She is so womanly she doesn't need the "woman" to be a part of her name. I for one will from now on refer to her as "Sister" or "Sis."

monster 04-28-2011 06:37 AM

For Pete's sake, last night's posts prove troll for those still doubting. totally different character/grammar structure etc. It was fun for a while, but lasted too long.

infinite monkey 04-28-2011 07:10 AM

Still not sure it wasn't a sock puppet, designed to bring us all together after the "do you hate IM and monster?" debacle.

If it was all real: well damn!

If not, it was a good laugh for a while.

disclaimer: I haven't read all last night's posts.

Goodbye pam, we hardly knew ye.

Sundae 04-28-2011 12:10 PM

Damn, I thought it would take a couple of days for people to notice!
I just figured I'm 40 next year, I can no longer play the ingenue, let alone masquerade as a girl.

I expect I'll still be called SG, in the same way as people sometimes still call JimHelm LJ.
Or is that just me?
I'm sure it'll fall naturally into an abbreviation at some point and I'm not really fussed what it is.

I am woman! Hear me mew!

sexobon 05-09-2011 07:21 PM

Is there a way to make a user un-ignorable (i.e. they can't be put on ignore) without making them a moderator?

I'm considering recruiting, via the moderator election procedure (i.e. nominations followed by an election), a full time character assassin for the Politics forum. There may even be positions for 3 people to provide 'round the clock coverage. They would operate by proxy to engage perpetrators of disruptive personal attacks so that users who prefer to dialogue in an educated language don't have to waste valuable time on that distraction.

While nominations would be overt, the election would have secret ballots and secret results overseen by the Administrator. Those elected would operate under sockpuppet names. They could accept "zingers" by PMs to build up their repertoire and block users who send PMs of any other nature. They would not otherwise correspond with other users under their operative names.

While the community can't eliminate all untoward behavior [the price of freedom here], it may be able to channel that behavior while having a heck of a lot of fun in the process of doing so.

not really no

sexobon 05-09-2011 07:44 PM

Then my secret squirrels will have to regularly change their usernames so the perps can't ignore them. What's the per capita limit on sockpuppets?

Why would that forum need any more?

sexobon 05-14-2011 09:38 PM

That's like asking why insurgents should be quelled by others with insurgent capabilities recruited to be counterinsurgents. Answer; because, I'm too indifferent to do the counterinsurgency myself. Wanna become a secret squirrel? With your moderator's experience, there's a place for you in the new Politics Forum order.

xoxoxoBruce 05-16-2011 01:41 AM

No thank you, I think there quite enough assassins there.

DanaC 05-21-2011 09:04 AM

and elicit assignations...no wait...that'd be in the Relationships forum...

footfootfoot 05-21-2011 02:30 PM

Who elicited assignations?

ZenGum 05-21-2011 08:19 PM

Illicit assignations? That was totally Dana and Lookout.

Dana and Lookout
sitting in a forum
one more vote and
they'd have quorum!

footfootfoot 05-21-2011 09:34 PM

Haggis Out Loud!

busterb 05-22-2011 12:21 PM

Why am I not seeing some of the posted photos? Just in last few days. Been haveing problems with stand-by mode. I have uninstalled a few thing trying to fix that, but nothing to do w/photos. I did take all things Adobe, but photoshop.

Gravdigr 05-29-2011 11:34 AM

I received several database error messages today on the Cellar. Never seen one before. I hope that's not a bad omen.

skysidhe 05-29-2011 11:39 AM

You're lucky, I have been getting them off and on for a few weeks now.

Pete Zicato 06-08-2011 02:51 PM

Is there a way to set size parameters on IMG tags?

Undertoad 06-08-2011 03:14 PM

vBulletin seems to just ignore them completely

sexobon 06-08-2011 08:16 PM

Have any questions in this thread been asked often enough to be put in FAQ?

Will the FAQ intro info be updated?

I changed my email address and am waiting for the confirmation email. I can't send PMs in the meantime, or view old ones, or anything.

So I signed up under anon because it doesn't matter who I am that is changing email.

Will I get those capabilities back when I get the confirmation? Will I get a confirmation? Are they automatic or do I need to wait for the conformation fairy?

Undertoad 06-29-2011 01:07 PM

I don't know but I'm guessing I just confirmed you

anonymous 06-29-2011 03:16 PM

I cannot send or view or receive PMs. Should I get an email at my new email?

Thanks for your help UT.

anonymous 06-29-2011 03:56 PM

Never mind UT. Got it. It went to quarantine or whatever. All is good.

Thanks so much.

Idle Thoughts 07-07-2011 11:52 AM

Hiya, I'm new. Is there a reason why I can't do things like: Access "Options" under the user CP (I like to turn off signatures and adjust the posts per page), send PMs (which I would have done instead of posting here if I could), or even view profiles (which is understandable because some boards don't allow members to view them)?

Idle Thoughts 07-07-2011 11:53 AM

Huh. And I guess none of my posts will show up until a mod approves them either.
Hey, whatever you got to do to safeguard against spammers and the like...isn't that hard work for the mods, though? Hah.

classicman 07-20-2011 09:57 PM

Whats with all the hits on the EDAR thread?

SamIam 07-20-2011 10:17 PM

Uhmmm... What's the EDAR thread?

classicman 07-21-2011 01:36 PM

EDAR

Its Bruce's fault.

Undertoad 07-21-2011 01:51 PM

This picture

http://cellar.org/attachment.php?att...4&d=1237841881

which was linked to in this post

http://cellar.org/showpost.php?p=548763&postcount=48

has been hotlinked in this thread at gametrailers.com

http://forums.gametrailers.com/threa...997298?page=31

And because that is a hugely popular thread on a hugely popular forum, bandwidth for cellar.org has doubled in the last four days and is generally slowing down the system.

NEVER HOTLINK

It's always something isn't it? Now I have to decide what to do about the situation. Make the attachment a dick pic?

Undertoad 07-21-2011 02:06 PM

I've just fuggin made the pic unavailable. Even to us. That'll do.

Rhianne 07-21-2011 02:42 PM

I'm not too smart on this stuff. Is using Photobucket okay? What is the best way to attach photos? - I see the address in the 'properties' of some come up as Cellar attachments - mine don't.

Undertoad 07-21-2011 02:45 PM

I would use imgur.com, I think they have better rules about this sort of thing.

Rhianne 07-21-2011 02:45 PM

...or are you saying we shouldn't link pictures from here to elsewhere?

Sorry, I promise I'm not really stupid!

classicman 07-21-2011 02:46 PM

OK so I see the image I want, drag and drop to my desktop, attach it to my post and then delete it from my desktop.
That correct?

glatt 07-21-2011 02:47 PM

You can do an attachment, which is good, because then the picture is hosted by the Cellar. And you can also put it on an image hosting site where you have an account, like photobucket or flickr, etc., and just follow the policies that they have for linking.

edit: And I got distracted while typing this so I see it's been answered.

infinite monkey 07-21-2011 02:49 PM

Save picture to desktop. (right click on pic and save to...)

REsize if necessary using MS Pic Manager (compress for web pages)

Use Manage Attachments while in Advanced (not available in quick reply)

Browse for file, find your desktop, attach photo.

Close window.

Submit reply.

It doesn't care if you leave it on your computer or not.

classicman 07-21-2011 03:06 PM

Oy vey

Rhianne 07-21-2011 03:07 PM

Thanks everyone.

infinite monkey 07-21-2011 03:23 PM

No, don't do it that way. It doesn't work as of about 20 minutes ago:

http://www.cellar.org/showthread.php...651#post745651

I guess you'll have to hotlink. ;)

Undertoad 07-21-2011 03:34 PM

That was me, trying to figure out the best way to block those fuckers... and blocking all of us as a result. It works now.
