I'm a little curious as to why I'm seeing this

Attachment 61808

about half the time right after I post. Haven't seen it before, and I'm not trying to post a poll.

Any ideas?

Bueller?

sexobon 09-17-2017 12:52 PM

It seems that if there's a slowdown/delay in processing the post, for whatever reason, the message appears to let you that the content was received and is being processed; so, you won't resubmit it.

Looking pretty. The lawsuit would bring a lot of free publicity too. :D

UT, Firefox on Win7 machine saying your security certificate expired 30 minutes ago, won’t load site.

sexobon 12-27-2017 06:58 PM

Happens with the Cellar homepage; but, direct links to other pages (like profiles, BB code list) go right through.

I can override the warning too.

Undertoad 12-27-2017 07:13 PM

This is fixed

sexobon 12-29-2017 11:40 AM

We seem to get recurring spam-like new user registrations for an essay writing service. The service's website URL is listed as the user's homepage in their profile. Does banning the IP address for the website stop reregistration under another user name; or, do they register here from IP addresses not affiliated with their website?

Undertoad 12-29-2017 12:58 PM

No, it's always a different IP. I've deleted all home pages for anyone with fewer than 10 posts.

Undertoad 12-29-2017 01:52 PM

And all users that had links in their Interests/Location/etc. and 0 posts have been deleted. This is a problem, because they can't be prevented from using them before they are Confirmed as real posting users.

Yes Im getting that also on a site I am a co-admin on..... They keep posting it and its a pain in the ass!!

Carruthers 01-08-2018 04:42 AM

I note that the currently active users stats tend to show 275, or thereabouts, guest users.

Is there any way of determining if they are bona fide guests or automated systems with the ultimate intention of generating new spam members.

There never seems to be a shortage of those, does there?

Undertoad 01-08-2018 07:20 AM

Most of the traffic is search engine bots. But the only way to know for sure is to go through the logs by hand...

Thanks for that, UT.

As I type there are 262 'guests'. The number seems remarkably consistent.

Undertoad 01-08-2018 09:39 AM

About 200 of them are one single poorly-behaved French spider, with addresses like:

ip72.ip-54-36-148.eu

Who knows what they are doing, I sure don't

Undertoad 01-08-2018 09:48 AM

That turns out to be the "Ahrefs" search bot, which is indexing us continuously for the last several years.

https://ahrefs.com/robot

Undertoad 01-08-2018 09:51 AM

I can't see why they are useful so I've politely told them to go away via the file "/robots.txt". Let's see what happens in 15 minutes' time.

user-agent: AhrefsBot
disallow: /

glatt 01-08-2018 09:54 AM

It's been a while since I looked at who was online, but when I have, the majority of guests are search engine spiders.

OK it may take them longer to pick up the request

Clodfobble 01-08-2018 10:01 AM

In theory search engine spiders are good, right? I mean, everybody wants accurate search results. As long as they're not acting like that one French spider that can't stop checking for new posts every 2 seconds. (Certainly can't identify with that impulse myself. Nope. Not me.)

Undertoad 01-08-2018 10:13 AM

I... I can't tell any longer

People still come to us via search results, so I guess so. But this engine is Ukrainian (it was just pretending to be French) and I can't tell what it actually does.

xoxoxoBruce 01-08-2018 10:40 AM

Trump only knows.

Undertoad 01-09-2018 10:46 AM

Ahrefs has not stopped spidering so we will move to banning their IPs

Carruthers 01-12-2018 03:35 PM

Earlier I attempted to post a Liveleak video but, despite my best endeavours, couldn't do so.

My impression is that the string of characters/digits after the = symbol are copied, pasted in the reply box, highlighted and then have the Liveleak tags wrapped around them by means of the appropriate button.

I tried that method to no avail. Could someone kindly point me in the right direction, please?

Ta!

Undertoad 01-12-2018 04:05 PM

actually I think LiveLeak has stopped permitting embedded videos in general, but couldn't find proof of that

I should remove the button

Thanks for that, UT!

It did occur to me that that might be the case.

sexobon 01-12-2018 05:56 PM

I was looking this up in the vBulletin forums and found an old '06 entry that indicates there have always been some restrictions:

Then I saw a '15 entry that gave an embed code:

I noticed that the LiveLeak URL in the example code above, as recent as '15, was still using "http" rather than "https" and I'm wondering if the Cellar's embed code has been changed to the latter since both the Cellar and LiveLeak are now secured with "https" URLs. Does that make a difference?

Undertoad 01-12-2018 06:09 PM

That ain't working. I think the embed policy changed more recently than 2015

No that should not make a difference

DanaC 02-09-2018 02:15 PM

Every time I go into the Facebook is killing everything thread it tries to kill my computer.

I keep getting a 'threat detected' message from my anti-virus software and then it tels me it has 'safely aborted connection on cellar.org because it was infected with HTML-Facebook-A [Phish].'

Same with me...

Attachment 63158

Undertoad 02-09-2018 02:47 PM

Weird...

There are only two links on the page that aren't usual, the original Splitsider link and a nytimes link. I've remove the splitisder link, does it still do it?

Carruthers 02-09-2018 02:51 PM

I'm on my iPad at the moment. I'll fire up the PC again and let you know in a few minutes.

Carruthers 02-09-2018 02:56 PM

Back on the PC again. Getting the 'connection was reset' page but not moving on to the 'Threat secured' stage as previously.

DanaC 02-09-2018 03:14 PM

I'm still getting it.

Undertoad 02-09-2018 04:44 PM

K then this is AVG's problem. It's a bug in their software and they will have to take a look at it. The only links that aren't placed by regular users are the Tapatalk links that are on every page. I think AVG is doing this in error.

DanaC 02-09-2018 05:05 PM

Does Avaast use AVG's software? I use Avaast. it looks a near identical warning screen.

Undertoad 02-09-2018 05:34 PM

Try it now

DanaC 02-09-2018 05:45 PM

Fine now.

What did you do?

Undertoad 02-09-2018 06:05 PM

I renamed the thread. Faceb00k.

Avast is AVG.

Carruthers 02-10-2018 03:12 AM

All is well this morning.

I've done an anti-virus scan and there's nothing nasty there.

I thought that was what you'd done, but I wasn't sure I hadn't just misremembered the original title.

Why did that work?

Undertoad 02-10-2018 08:28 AM

Yeah, make a thread called "Facebook killing everything", it breaks the Cellar. It turns out, AVG has an irony filter.

DanaC 02-10-2018 11:12 AM

Who knew?

Undertoad 02-10-2018 11:18 AM

But yeah, I have no legit guess on this one.

DanaC 02-10-2018 11:23 AM

Facefuck literally infected the Cellar with its nonsense.

Re: Internet Forum. Google adword costs thread.

Clicking on the above triggers a warning from AVG of a phishing attack.
It also appears to open a window from Microsoft warning that my PC has four viruses.
Pretty sure that it isn't genuine so avoided the 'Proceed' button.
I'll do an AVG scan in a few minutes to see what else might be lurking within.

ETA: AVG and Malwarebytes scans completed and nothing found.

limey 02-20-2018 06:23 AM

When I click on the gurgle adturds thread I get diverted to a site which says maybe the site is down, or maybe my adblocker is interfering with connecting to the site.
But I can click on and go to any other thread, it seems ....

Yep, that's about what I get.
However, using my iPhone I can read the offending post in the thread which has a link.
Clicking on that takes me to a site which offers to manage ads on Facebook, supposedly.
Not quoting the site address for obvious reasons.

OldTigerNewHat 03-05-2018 10:59 PM

Didn't there used to be an introduction thread?

BigV 03-05-2018 11:20 PM

It appears you've repurposed this one.

Hello Tiger, nice hat.

OldTigerNewHat 03-05-2018 11:29 PM

Thank you V, it has been a long time and it is good to see all of ya'll user names. How has everyone been.

Gravdigr 03-06-2018 02:14 PM

Formerly! I mean Tiger! Nice to 'see' you, again.

Welcome back.

OldTigerNewHat 03-06-2018 08:50 PM

Thank you grav, it is good to "see" you as well.

Dude111 03-06-2018 10:27 PM
