Belh. To quote Bad Bays "its liek a big shiny dick with wheels".
If you want power, pump up a WRX and add dual nos tanks. If you want style, get a Audi TT. The styling is nice, but nothing even close to groundbreaking, powerful, but nothing eyepopping. Lotus Elise woud be preferable.
Nothing But Net • Jan 28, 2002 5:02 am
C'mon, Jag. You can't tell me you don't like that silver one.

When I get my inheritance, I'm buying one....

The funny thing is, when you click on the Maserati picture you get ads for Toyota, Ha Ha!
jaguar • Jan 28, 2002 6:34 am
looks liek someone too an anglegrinder to a porshe, the design is so...mundane.
I expected better.

As the debate above indicates, no car is perfect for everyone.

Check 'em all out at the North American International Auto Show recently held in motor city.

(btw, why hasn't anyone in the Cellar from motown got their city up in the Cities forum, yet?}

Some car companies are doing great stuff on the Internet, these days:

Ferrari
Maserati
Audi
Volkswagen NewBeetle

The big news this summer will likely be the new Mini by BMW, a toy most of us can afford to enjoy!

From an Internet perspective, it's fun to look at how each country in Planet Mini has developed their own unique web experience. Which Mini website is the best, in your opinion?

It sure is fun to dream cars!
Undertoad • Jan 28, 2002 9:45 am
A 163 horsepower BMW-built Mini with a 0-60 time of 6.9 seconds? This thing is a motorcycle that forgot it was only supposed to have 2 wheels. Color me impressed.

The Merlin, which its maker claims will hit the streets this summer,
is powered by a walloping 1,400-cc fuel-injected V-twin Harley-Davidson.

How about this:

Bugatti Veyron W16 Does 0-300 km/h in <14 sec. Which means one averages ~6 m/s^2 (over half a gee)
and you reach 300 Km/h in 583 metres or ~640 yards.
dave • Feb 13, 2002 11:32 am
Dig the second one. The first one is fugly!

The world had to take a fresh look at what constituted a supercar in 1980 when Audi launched the first Quattro. The fat-arched coupe had a 200 bhp turbo five cylinder engine, but more importantly, drive went to all four wheels.

As an all weather road car it was pretty much uncatchable at the time, and competition versions quickly cleaned up in the World Rally Championship.

After consistent winning seasons, they had to ban the damn thing to give the other manufacturers a chance. :)

Mine was a 1984 with black leather on charcoal metallic. It was the most fun car I ever drove, in any weather conditions. I'd like to relive those experiences in an Audi TT.

I heard when the TT first was introduced in the Motherland, they quickly had to recall it for maufacturing problems. Something like the braking system wasn't up to par with the speed it delivered. I guess the go-power isn't worth anything if you don't have any stop-power.
Here's a little more info.
dave • Feb 13, 2002 12:23 pm
A TT Roadster is one of the cars I *will* own before I die :) Those things are just cool as hell. Little bit expensive for me at the moment though - maybe in a couple of years. I dunno. But I'd definitely like to have a nice silver or black one. :)

Is it me, or does this strike anyone else as a pod from the Cloud City cloud cars in Empire Strikes Back?

Or, for the cinematically-challenged geeks out there, a bumper car? :)

Heh. Love it. What the article says, basically:

"If you go faster than 110 miles per hour, you might have trouble slowing down and die."

Well... DON'T DRIVE THAT FAST! :)

All five fatal crashes were apparently on the Autobahn. Go figger.
blowmeetheclown • Feb 13, 2002 12:58 pm
I was in Germany just over a year ago visiting some friends. We headed up from Braunschweig (where I was staying) to Kiel (up north, on the Baltic). Most of our road-time was on the Autobahn, and we were in my friends' parents' Mercedes wagon. This thing was quite nice, had the onboard GPS and voice-navigation (though it was in German), traction control for winter/summer modes, and many other features that I was more than impressed with; but I can't seem to remember the model.
On the Autobahn, as with most German roads, it's illegal to pass on the right. We were in the middle lane going ~160kpm (100mph), and I saw about a dozen TT's passing us going at least 150mph. Then there were the 911's passing them - that was a sight. The whole car ride seemed very comfortable, and we were actually keeping up with most of the traffic.
dave • Feb 13, 2002 1:08 pm
911's are pretty quick :)

Can get a nice decked-out 911 Turbo for about $110,000 :)

Incidentally, that's another one of the cars that I will own, along with a Volvo P1800 :)
blowmeetheclown • Feb 13, 2002 1:29 pm
Why the p1800 unless you have one now?
And why waste your time with the 911 Turbo when you can have 456hp from a 3.6L 6-cylinder in the GT2?
dave • Feb 13, 2002 1:50 pm
The P1800's are cool. I'll have to get it and restore it, but I plan on being retired by the time I'm 40, so hopefully that isn't too unrealistic. :)

I just happen to like the 911 Turbo. They're pretty badass cars :)

My parents apparently owned one, which I now curse them for selling; they say the trunk was just low enough to be ruined in any sort of altercation with another car's bumper, meaning either expensive repairs or a perma-dent.
dave • Feb 13, 2002 2:53 pm
Which is why I would just use mine to go on drives through secluded roads and shit. It's pretty hard to find parts for a nearly 40 year old car. :)
jaguar • Feb 13, 2002 3:26 pm
I'd happily kill all of you for an audi TT.

911s are the best proche no doubt (friends dad owns one - great to borrow for making an enterance )

Now that I look at it again, that Merlin looks uncomfortably like the vehicle of Ace and Gary, the ambiguously gay duo on Saturday Night Live.
Nic Name • Feb 13, 2002 4:13 pm
That is really an awesome vehicle. The other photos in the article are spectacular too,
so I'm reproducing the link to the article, here.

Thanks for posting this car in the Dream Car thread, mitheral. :)

The Ambiguously Gay Duo! The Ambiguously Gay Duo!

Man, that one where they bit each other's belts... I wasn't expecting that. I about had a heart attack with laughter :)

But how can you go wrong with this? Yahoo estmiates your payments to be $4,928 - $4,928/month*. Hell, If you're gonna pay that kinda money, why finance -- just buy 2 :)

*based on 0 down, 10% interest rate, 8% sales tax, 48 months.
dave • Feb 13, 2002 6:22 pm
There are a number of things they dropped from the Turbo. Plus, it's expensive. Plus, I like the looks of the Turbo better. :) (More specifically, the 1994 911 Turbo)

is there some footnote here that i'm not getting? those numbers are the same...
blowmeetheclown • Feb 13, 2002 11:47 pm
Sorry about that -- I just did a cut&paste from the yahoo site without any editing. I did it to avoid plagiarism -- yeah, that's it! And the Queen of England is my mother -- yea, that's the ticket!!
Undertoad • Feb 13, 2002 11:49 pm
Is that the one that does 0-60 in 3.8 seconds?
Slight • Feb 13, 2002 11:58 pm
Ok the Buggati sounds like a good idea until you look the interior.

Personally I like the Cunningham C-7. Don't get me wrong I like the TT like everyone else but I could probably afford that in my lifetime unlike these cars you never see in the real world.
Nic Name • Feb 14, 2002 12:21 am
I have to agree.

Super Car Wallpaper!

I don't know. With a lower average GNP/head (compared to the US), and gas/petrol being around $5/gallon, it's not like we can truly enjoy those cars.

Germany is an exception, as the 'car culture' there emphasizes cars as a status symbol.

X.

I had a neighbor that drove one of these a while back. Kinda funny looking, but extremely fast. Though I did have a boss at the computer lab that drove a Camaro SS he had souped up (he owned a garage when he lived in Hawaii he used to tell me), and it was quick enough to beat one of these in any form.
Soory if you have to scroll over, jag. :)

Because their corporate executives 30 and 15 years ago possessed and used driver's licenses? Not a joke. Quite serious. When US cars were, across the board, no exemption, in 1979, the worst cars in the western world, no top American auto executive could drive nor saw any reason why he should drive.

This from a book by Paul H Weaver:
When I went to Dearborn, it worried me that I knew nothing about cars - that I didn't even own one. Wouldn't this be a handicap to a rising young auto executive, I wondered? The answer was no. People at world headquarters almost never talked about cars. Even the many colleagues who had risen through the ranks of NAAO [North American Automotive Operations] and therefore had to know a lot about automobiles didn't show it. No one expresses any enthusiasm for cars that I ever detected. ... What did interest my colleagues at Ford ... was the company's position in the auto industry. ... It often seemed that my colleagues would bear any burden or incur any risk than see a competitor gain the tiniest advantage. Issues like the character and quality of our products, or how customers used and felt about them, struck few sparks by comparison.

Classic symptoms of an MBA dominated company.

Ford has only just recently eliminated the last of the MBA, pre 1981, cars. They still use many pre-1979 engines - probably one reason for violent arguements between Nasser and Ford. But to have world class products requires management for decades that comes from where the work gets done. You find that in some European car companies.
