11/4/2005: Angry owl

xoB finds this beaut at Weather Underground. The official cap:

When I was photographing this 5 month old long earred owl named Nemo, he was startled by an unusual sound. As a natural response, he immediately puffed up to a very large size in order to scare off the perpetrator. It is rare to experience this kind of reaction in an owl. Nemo went back to normal size when he discovered that the threat wasn't real.

This is, of course, why puffer fish are commonly referred to as "the owls of the deep".

Nature's defense mechanisms are always something to behold.

Ha -- that's awesome! Now I want to drop by one of the Florida Tourist-Cheese shops and get one of the puffer fish hanging lamps they sell. There is nothing as pleasant as a decorative fixture that is made up of a fish with a lightbulb stuff inside.

Sorry! I started it.

An image so vivid, you can almost hear the frightened sailor hissing to scare off the unseen attacker.

Weather Underground? Like the terrorist group, that blew themselves up because they were smoking cigarettes before trying to bomb Merryl-Lynch ?

Still, I wouldn't want to run into one of those things in a dark alley... Or maybe a forest of some sort... :worried:

On a close-up view, you can see an angry male owl. But further back, the face changes expression and even genders! If you squint, blink, or defocus, an angry male owl should substitute for the face of a neutral female owl.

This impressive illusion created by Dr. Aude Oliva and Dr. Philippe Schyns, illustrates the ability of the visual system to separate information coming from different spatial frequency channels. In the image, high Spatial Frequencies (HSF) represent a male owl, w69, 243-ith an angry facial expression, mixed with the low spatial frequency information from the face of a happy female owl.

Get a real job.

When it's pissed, a dog will growl,
Meaner than some puffy owl.
Now,you may think I'm being jerky,
But i think it looks like a surprised turkey.

LP... your poetry sounds familier.
Did you get to the 5 grand mark?

I think my old lady may be part owl.... I've noticed she keeps getting bigger. And hell she's ALWAYS mad. Maybe if I could figure a way to quit pissing her off she'd get smaller. Maybe I'm on the wrong thread.

Great image anyway. I like me some Fridays here.

This image that Yellow #5 posted has been photoshoped. Notice that his face is a mirror image on both sides when split down the middle. Not sure how they did the hands, that threw me off from thinking it was photoshopped.

People's faces are asymetrical. However I think the more symetrical a face is, the more asthetic it is considered to be.

Dude, that's Dizzy Gillespie! It's not photoshopped, he really looked like that.
Clodfobble • Nov 4, 2005 11:30 pm
His cheeks really did look like that, but I agree that this particular photo has been touched up. Maybe by the original photographer, to make it a nicer publicity shot. But his face is way too symmetrical. Look at the eyebrows.

I'm betting Diz was looking halfway around a mirror, and his hand is actually on the mirror, not on his face.

There was a partial symmetry contest on Worth1000 awhile ago, and the Dizzy picture was done by Kulstad. He didn't post the source image though.

In that case, I'm terribly impressed with that guy's photomanipulation skills.

Isn't it against international animal protection laws to impale owls on large wooden posts like that? :)
