Name this ugly dog
Am going to adopt this critter tomorrow. Stella --Female--Blue Heeler Mix
--Born on February 9, 2005--Surrendered on April 6, 2005
--Up to date on shots-- and spayed. I'm not fond of Stella. So how about you Dwellers give it a go. If she doesn't keep the hard shelled possums out of my yard, she won't be here long.
My sons birthday is Feb 9th! You are in for trouble! :eyebrow:
How about Ruby?
Aww... she's not that ugly, for a dog...
Stella --Female--
Blue Heeler Mix
You don't like
Stella?
If she knows her name, you could pick something close enough that she still recognizes it. Such as "Bella". "Killa". Or "Mellow".
(No, not Mellow, a heeler puppy will be the opposite)
second thought, how about scruffy?
WHY are you adopting a dog that you don't even like????? What a horrible time this poor creature is going to have with you if that's the way you feel. Please take her back to the shelter and do both of you a favor. There are many thousands of dogs in the Humane Society of Louisiana's shelters right now, desperate for owners, and you are bound to find something more suited to you there.
She's going to live in the yard? Why are you bothering to get a pet?
It's not fair to the dog to get her as a functional item to kill possums.
They're supposed to be companion animals, part of the pack. What a miserable, lonely life she'll lead.
How about naming her "sorry"?
Rocky : the eye of the tiger !
(I've read that Stallone, 60 years old, is going to shoot Rocky number 6... :sniff: )
WHY are you adopting a dog that you don't even like?????
I think he meant he doesn't like
the name Stella.
I think, but can't be sure, that buster meant he didn't like the name Stella, but he still likes the dog (although he thinks she is ugly). Am I right?
edit: I am too slow... Brett's Honey beat me to it.
..... she won't be here long.
That doesn't sound to me like Busterb has any emotional interest in this "critter". I hope I'm wrong that a lot of screaming and kicks will come this pup's way if she "doesn't measure up", because I'm from the South and generally Southerners are good to their dogs and I'd like to think Busterb is the same. But if you want to discuss an animal from a purely functional sense, a Heeler is not the right dog to keep wildlife off your property. They herd by nipping the back legs of livestock, etc., and they are known to be a "mean" breed which can turn on the master or refuse discipline. He should look for a Hound breed instead, they will chase anything that moves and romp on it. But I suspect that either way, Busterb will be back on this board saying the dog has to go because it barks all night while keeping wildlife out of the yard, doing what dogs do naturally. Consider some nice quiet traps instead
She is gonna suck him in. This dog will be eating on the kitchen table inside of two months. Ona says her name is Bone.
I have forgot more about dogs that a few of you will ever know. I have an inside one that I raised from a pup about 10 + years ago. I need a yard dog, My Golden died last year.which will have 125 ft of overhead cable to run on. A dog house and a low shed for shade. Yesterday I got my dog a new basketball, she chases it over the yard and after 6 years, the old one was shot.
All I asked for was a name, not this other BS. I don't have a small yard and my dogs are free to run it. The new dog will go on wire till I have time to work w/it.
I paid 50 bucks for dog and I don't like the name. Nuf said.
Give her formal name as Roberta and, in the fine southern tradition, call her Bobbie! Bobbie Joe! Or, Billie Jean! Or, Sally. She sorta looks like a Sally.
Thanks Bri. Was think about Sue. This's a photo of dotty and Tippy, Tippy has gone on. It's part of my back yard. Dotty even has her own ottoman? Which I'll post . Mistreat my dog! Never. In fact I've had to inform some people. Hey the dog lives here you don't, carry you ass if you don't like it.
That overhead cable is impressive. That's a proper run. Good work by you B, better dog man than most. Tonch, apologize to the man.
The long name is Australian Blue Heeler so her name might be "Sheila".

Yep, nice digs for any pooch. The guys over the fence wish they had it so good.
I think you should stay with Stella. Be a good Fella. Don't make me Yella. It's quiet in the Cella'.

Thanks guys. Yep the damn county put a jail in my backyard, I also got a night there about a week after Katrina. SUCKS.
I have both a mannequin and an aunt named Stella. It's a good name, but I think Sadie would be cuter for your dog.
Tonch, apologize to the man.
I'll gladly apologize for misunderstanding his objections about the pup being solely with the name, the reason for which was that he did not say one single nice thing about her in his first post. I do not know Buster personally but I said I gave him the benefit of any doubt because I'm also a Southerner. Likewise, I don't think Buster should have any beef with me, because I have spent the last month on the phone and emails trying to help with dog rescues in Louisiana and I am sensitive about what's happening to a lot of animals in his neck of the woods right now.

Sadie killed one of my Buff Orpingtons. Bad name.
Tonchi. Thanks. Wish I could do more. But I've called 18 contractors to look at my home. 2, so far have came by. No bid yet. I can't stay up all night looking for armadillos, so I'm hoping just the dog being in yard will help. The shed that the 2 dogs are on, I built for Tippy to try and teach him it was ok to dig there. Didn't work. And if you ever have a dog that gets after moles, your yard is gone. :smack: Dotty in garden after mole.

That's barely two months! Is she French?
sorry, couldn't resist
How about "Armie" after the pests you hope that she will rid you of? ;)
She looks like she'll be a good dog for you, Busterb!
She is beautiful! Whereever did you get the idea that she was ugly?
I am, however, coming up empty on possible names. I agree, that as an Australian breed, Sheila would be a great name for her. Now, considering her potential employment as the Scourge of Armadillos, "Dilly" came to mind. And she does seem to be a real
dilly of a dog.
Digger. No, no, man. I was callin' my dog. ;)
Best armadillo chaser I ever had was named Sparky. He would harry them until they stuck their head in a hole, then hold them by the tail till I got there with the shotgun. As soon as I grabbed the tail, he'd let go and back off. *whump* is the sound a .410 shotgun makes in an armadillo-filled hole in the ground.
My granddaddy named all the dogs. They were all Lady, Sparky, Sugarboy, Shep....you know, "dog" names. The first time I heard of a dog with a person's name, I thought it was hilarious. Now the so-called "dog" names sound wrong.
Sheila is at top of the list for now. Because it's Australian slang for girl, lady. Along with bird, I think.
I think Sheila is the best pick so far.
And for the rabid Tonchi, I got an email from my mom with some animal rescue pics on it, and posted them to my webpage.
http://onyxcougar.blogspot.comI am not rabid, I get my vaccinations on time ;)
this dog will enjoy warding off armadillos as much as we enjoy dwelling in the Cellar.... I had a good varmit dog one time named:
TRIXIE
I know two people who have heelers named BLUE.
Anyway good luck with her.
Wolf you win the name the mutt deal, for the reasons I posted above. She's a little skidish today and poor as a church mouse. But I can fix that. She's found the water and food. And Shelia isn't far from Stella. Really I don't think dogs get to carried away w/their names anyway. Just your tone of voice when you scream at'em. "But the bitch is ugly." and ya can't wash it off. Like me  Had no idea that we would get PETA involved in a flapping dogs name, what a ride bb
BTW, you got a night in the county jail, Busterb? How did that happen??????
"ya" want the long or short?
"ya" want the long or short?
Oh, heck, I want all the juicey details you're willing to divulge! :yum:
Well I had been trying to clean up my yard for days. A guy I know came by with a bunch of hands" Be PC now" from fema and cleaned up my yard. So I told him to pick the best hands and I would grill sausage for them when they knocked off. I went and got 27 bucks worth of sausage and some beer. No one showed up, so I went for ice. At this time was no power here. Anyway I, like a dumb ass carried a beer with me. And got stuck for OC and DUI by city. I got away clean on city, have to go to AA for 6 meetings but still waiting on state. I tried to get the cop not to swip the damn thing till we talked to some folks. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :wstupid:
Bummer!
You'd think the local cops would have better things to do in the wake of Katrina. Unfortunately, you were kind of asking for it with the OC thing. Hope things work out for you. 6 AA meetings ain't too bad. Around this town, you could get that all taken care of in a day! ;)
BTW they put refused test, because I couldn't blow to suit them. I have emphzima, copt and asbastois and had been w/out ac and power for 7 days then. no breathing treatments.
If you could show that you have these conditions you could fight that in court , but if you had an open container , well I would explain the situation to the judge and see what happens , luck to ya !!!!
As to nameing the dog , if i could spend some time with her i could come up with a name , Hard to tell from just seeing a pic , you have to get to know the dogs personality .
StaceyV said "She's going to live in the yard? Why are you bothering to get a pet? It's not fair to the dog to get her as a functional item to kill possums.

Stacey , you have evedently never had a Large working breed dog in a small house , they get bord and will chew up ANY thing they can get their mouth around , some of them ( Labs , Chesseys , etc,,,) have ATOMIC tailes , ever seen a verry expencive crystal coffie table dodad hit a hard floor , they FART loudenough and smelly enough to clear a room , they are BREAD to be out doors , to with stand the elements , to keep the yard clear of rodents , hell even little dogs have jobs , ever hear of a RAT Terrier ??? What could They be for ??? Ever seen a Jack Russel go after a sguirle or mouse ??? Docshounds ars long and short to go after burrowing critters !! labs and Chessies are Happyiest when they are running and swimming in the water going after fallen birds , FACT !!!
So BB wants this dog to keep the critters out of his yard , she has a purpose , a mission in life , besides sitting in some bodys lap
I bet if she is even sorta efective she will live out a LONG and happy life guarding his garden , romping on her 120' cable run ( does your dog or dogs have THAT much running room?????? ) barking at the various critters that come visiting in the nite .
Oh and she WILL be part of the pack , the out side guard , the first line of deffence !!
Zippyt is right on! Only those little lap-dog thingeys which aren't anything like serious ("working") dogs should be kept in the house, for their own health and yours. If a dog can't run and chase, he will use his imagination to keep busy and you won't like the results. It isn't a cruelty, they are constructed to be outdoors and will do just fine except in extreme cold or snow season. Just give them shade and clean water and some purpose to achieve and they are perfectly happy and healthy. I bred Australian Shepherds and Border Collies, and they got to sleep in the garage if the temperature in Phoenix was forcast to be below 25 degrees, but other than that they didn't need any pampering.
Wolf you win the name the mutt deal, for the reasons I posted above.
I think UT actually deserves the credit for suggesting Sheila. I just seconded the motion.
And I still say she ain't ugly!!
BTW they put refused test, because I couldn't blow to suit them. I have emphzima, copt and asbastois and had been w/out ac and power for 7 days then. no breathing treatments.
Did they take you to the hospital for a blood test or even ask you to take one? If they didn't, you likely got your out right there.
I operate a breathalyzer (actually an ALCO-Sensor brand) regularly. It doesn't take much of a blow to get a reasonably accurate result. Regular old exhale is more than enough for the breath test.

Is yours a Fuel-Cell kind? I chose that for my ignition interlock device because it it more accurate and won't give a false positiive as often. It's just $10/mo more. I think the auto devices are more complicated because they can't see if someone is emptying a balloon into it. So, you have to blow and buzz at the same time onto a mouthpiece. It's tricky. Serves as an anti-theft device for my pickup truck. Ha!
I am seriously thinking about buying a portable breathaylzer to take to events so I can encourage my friends to test themselves before driving. But, I would probably just piss them off if I did that.
I think Sheila fits nicely but you never really know until you get to know the personality. Plus its close enough to Stella that if she is used to it the transition won't be difficult.
She's cute and looks like fun.
You can come to my house and build my dogs a ruyn. Scooping there poop would be nice too. Thanks ahead of time. :right:

Often not a good idea ... a breathalyzer at a party becomes a really cool contest ... who can get the highest reading in the shortest amount of time ...
Also, if you test someone at the site, they are below your state limit ... they drive and through the magic of metabolism their BAL goes UP ... they get popped for DUI and they blame you for the rest of their lives.
They probably think you're a terrible preachy asshole (I don't actually conceive of you this way) since you stopped drinking anyway. The Breathalyzer would only make that worse.
Wolf, your right again. Sorry UT. Will claim the over look was because of trying to get my rabbit assed mind around some of the more asinine post. :thankyou:
The bitch slipped her collar last night, but was on door steps when a friend woke me up this AM. I put her on a 10' chain and let her go to my swing around dark. There seems to to be a slight problem with Dotty as to who's the big dog:lol2: I have a feeling she's been mistreated.
Actually, I had a rottweiler for 7 years that lived in my one bedroom apartment with me. She went outside, for walks, to the park and to the beach for exercise, but she never lived outside.
To prevent chewing, I gave her appropriate chew toys and kept her in a crate while I was working until I could trust her. They DO learn to leave your things alone and use their own toys.
For housebreaking- crated until she was reliable.
Yes, working dogs love to have a job to do.
That's why I obedience trained her . She was at her happiest when we were going through her commands "sit, down, stay, on your side, come, heel, fetch, find a stick, etc.
Farting? Yeah, if you feed cheap soy and corn-based food. My rotti never farted unless someone gave her a cheap dog treat like milkbones.
What the hell are you feeding your dog? 'Ol Roy? Worse?
It's all a matter of if you have the will and the make the effort to train your dog. Yeah, if you're too lazy to train the dog and too cheap to feed something that won't give it diarrhea and gas, then I guess keeping it outside is a "solution".
I think Stacey's article does raise a lot of good points. If Sheila is being kept outside alone, it is no surprise that she slipped her collar. She's lonely.
My first Cardigan Corgi was an indoor dog. I knew that Cardigans had been bred to herd sheep and are lively dogs that need a lot of exercise. A Cardigan is a deceptive looking dog. They seem small because of their short legs, but what they are is a big dog on short legs.
My Cardigan got two 45 minutes walks a day, lots of time playing ball with ME in the back yard, and the basics of obediance training. I fed him a good diet and gave him real meaty bones to chew on, as well as lots of chew toys. He was too low slung for his waving tail to knock stuff off the coffee table. He was house trained in two days, and the greatest "sin" he ever committed was my own fault. I'd bought a new pair of leather shoes and foolishly left the shoes in a box alone with my pup when I was suddenly had to go leave the house to do something. I returned home to a brand new pair of thoroughly chewed up shoes.
I'd say I averaged two hours a day doing things with my dog - walking him, playing ball, etc. He was worth every moment. The rest of the time he was content to chew on a bone while I read or watched TV or whatever.
A dog is like anything else. Your reward will be in direct proportion to the amount of time you put in with it.
Now, I'll go down with Tonchi for my rabies shot. ;)
(Here's a pic of my new Cardi pup's older half sister winning a herding trial):
An acquaintance of mine used to have two cats. She and her husband both insisted that it was "cruel" to let them go outdoors because "they might get run over." They lived in a reasonably-sized house, and it seemed to work out okay. But then finances took a downturn, and they moved into a one-bedroom apartment, and got a third cat to boot. All three cats were unhappy, and demonstrated this by urinating everywhere (previously all three were housebroken for years), tearing up the carpet, and clawing at the front door constantly. Because of this the couple would often confine all three to the bathroom for hours on end when no one could keep a close eye on them. Still they insisted that allowing them outside would be vicious and uncaring.
Finally one day the door got left open a microsecond too long and all three escaped, and were never seen again. Animals need shelter in bad weather just like humans, but they fundamentally prefer the outdoors and the freedom to run around more than we do.
How is keeping a rottweiler in a small crate during work hours better for it than allowing it to be outside on a long leash during work hours?
One can be as cruel to an animal left inside as one can be cruel to an animal left outside, as your example illustrates, Clodfobble (and BTW, I am NOT accusing Busterb of cruelty. His dog run and canine accomodations look quite nice).
The couple in your example were foolish to add a third cat to the mix in a cramped apartment. They were very cruel to leave them all locked in the bathroom on top of that. The cats ran away because they were cruelly treated, not because they longed to become feral animals.
I recently lost my good friend Traveler who I had found as an adult stray and who retained a desire to check out the out-of-doors. He would go out the back door and generally ask to be let in the front door ten minutes later. A month ago he vanished. Not because of a longing for freedom or because of inhumane treatment - never was there a cat so waited on hand and foot as Traveler! I went all around the neighborhood calling him and talked with the couple who live behind me. They told me the story of their cat nearly being eaten by a coyote. One night they open the door and in dashed kitty with the coyote right on his heels. They literally slammed the door in the coyote's face, and their cat is now an indoor one. I suspect Traveler was not so fortunate as their kitty was, and it breaks my heart. The cat I had before Traveler I got as a kitten and she was an indoor cat all her life and lived to be 20 years old.
Some very large dogs are actually excellent pets for apartments which you would never believe they could exist in. It has to do with the breed characteristics, which have nothing to do with size (witness the Corgi). I have known people who had Rotties, German Shepherds, and Great Danes in one bedroom dwellings and had no problems with them once past the puppy stage. I have also known somebody whose Rottie ate every shoe the girl owned and then the panty hose and other unmentionables which had been left on the floor while the person went to work and locked the dog inside. I also know somebody who kept a pedigreed German Shepherd on a run line in a large yard and the animal hung himself and died. The key to all these cases is the human involvement.
If you are not there all day long, your dog will bark. That's a given. If you are not there and the dog has nothing to do, he will FIND something to do and the results will not be pleasant. If you give the dog NO human contact it will become stressed, anxious, and unpredictable (throw in a little abuse while you ARE with the animal and that is how you create a junkyard dog). So you have to interact with your dog and you have to give it things to do in order to gain approval and get exercise, and that does not have that much to do with indoors or outdoors.
Buster has a dog which is at least part Heeler, and from the looks of it, some of the other part is Hound. Both dogs who like to run, A LOT, and buster has that covered. The dog also has other canine companionship, space to move around, and humans who pay attention to it. She should do fine, unless Buster discovers she is afraid of Armadillos :worried:
Well this thread was started as "Name this ugly dog." Since then I have been told about dogs that I've never even heard of. And how to raise a big dog in an apartment. :lol2: Anyway Sheila is so dumb? That she doesn't even know how to eat a biscuit. Yes I feed my dogs anything. Pork chop, chicken bones you name it. Now tell me why I shouldn't do this. BTW I'm setting up an education fund for Sheila and to take her to a head doctor, so along with all the advice I've got. Please send money.
You can feed them raw chicken bones, but not cooked.
A heeler is going to be a little more "wild" as dogs go - a little less domesticated.
Dotty most time won't eat unless cooked. Opps forgot my address for funds. justask@youwish.com
Well this thread was started as "Name this ugly dog." Since then I have been told about dogs that I've never even heard of. And how to raise a big dog in an apartment.
C'mon Buster, you know
any thread is liable to go
anywhere.
Besides, you learned not to leave your pantyhose on the floor.
If you ask me (which no one has, but I'm full of free advice and opinions that I bestow quite generously ;) ), a blue heeler is no different than a Cardigan Corgi. Heelers are meant to be herding dogs. Herding dogs all share a ready intelligence and an amiable disposition - can't have them munching down the sheep, now can we?
I've always heard that cooked chicken bones can be lethal for a dog since they may splinter in the dog's digestive tract. This thought has been spooky enough that I always kept cooked chicken bones away from my dogs. I have given chicken bones to my cats will no adverse effect though. But I figure cats' digestive systems are used to processing all those rare and endangered song birds that kitties have such a fondness for.
I wouldn't know about bisquits, although the dogs I've owned were more than willing to partake of any human food I bestowed upon them. My Corgi would delicately accept potato chips from between my own teeth. He NEVER snapped at offered food the way most dogs do.
And before someone jumps all over me for feeding potato chips to my dogs, let me add that I did not make a habit of this, but it was such a cute trick on the Corgi's part that sometimes I couldn't resist.
(PSSSsssst! Busterb! Maybe Sheila would like potato chips!)
Well this thread was started as "Name this ugly dog." Since then I have been told about dogs that I've never even heard of. And how to raise a big dog in an apartment.
I was kind of perversely wondering how long we could drag this out before Buster's eyes started glazing over. I apologize again, hee hee :bogroll:
"How is keeping a rottweiler in a small crate during work hours better for it than allowing it to be outside on a long leash during work hours?"
I only did that until she was trained enough that I could trust her alone in the aparment. Maybe 6 months and that's it.
When you tie out a dog, it can get teased by neighborhood kids, cats, other dogs, etc and develop aggression issues. It can hang itself. It can dig holes in the yard. It can become a barker and all your neighbors can start complaining.
A crate is the dog's den. It keeps them calm and out of trouble. It's not forever and it's safer and more humane than tieing the dog out for all of the above reasons.
I think feeding a dog raw chicken with bones is an excellent idea. Pork chops- hope they're cooked (trichinosis).
cooked chicken bones can kill him.
Table scraps and raw meaty bones are healthier than that bagged kibble-crap.
The best diet for a dog is whole chickens, red meats and raw meaty bones, pureed or cooked veggies and organ meats. (basically, anything that resembles a whole prey animal or it's components, as long as you include bone for calcium and fish or fish oil for those all-important omega 3 fatty acids...)
And now, I'm done.
You're gonna do whatever you want with this dog and I can type until my fingers turn blue but it probably won't make a difference.
Sometimes I wish I didn't care so much about dogs and animal welfare. It can be pretty frustrating.
I work in an animal shelter on Wednesdays. I see dogs that were raised in the backyard. They're almost impossible to adopt.
Okay, okay, I'm done.
I was kind of perversely wondering how long we could drag this out before Buster's eyes started glazing over. I apologize again, hee hee :lol2:
I have always said that any dog who digs a hole big enough to be buried in will go in hole. Stacyv bite my butt. Anyway Shelia has made the grade. If someone at coffee shop in AM doesn't want the bitch, that's 50 bucks down the hole. Also 5 deer in my garden other night and this bitch is sleeping! Damn tunnel is around 4 feet deep.
You'll change your tune when she strikes oil. :D
Good lord, surely she only exposed a recent sinkhole or water main break!!
Maybe she'll run across a marijuana tunnel, like we saw in the thread I wish I could find. Remember?
you sure that's not an armadillo hole? wow.
That is some fine excavating.

Today she broke the 100 foot cable at post, so didn't get loose. BUT I do not have time for this crap. My lawn mower has a plug broken off in head, painter showed up drunk and haven't seen the damn carpenter that got me to buy around 300 bucks worth of material in 4 weeks. So I was going to punch the dog's ticket. "Anvil" Mike talked me into turning her loose. Think in morning I'll regret that move. BTW a rant brought to you by me :smack:
