impotence

Trilby • Oct 3, 2005 8:15 pm
I can't write my paper. It's a stupid, worthless little impotent paper, but, still---I canna write it. I am frozen in fear. I shall be exposed as a fraud. goddamn. I suck more than anyone has ever sucked. I am not worthy of a lot of shit that I can't think of right now.
Damn. I dunno what do DO.
Clodfobble • Oct 3, 2005 8:46 pm
What's the topic?

Ok, go see if you can cure-suck some impotent guy, then write a paper on it, then get an infomercial.....and so on and so on
wolf • Oct 4, 2005 2:30 am
Despite my near legendary ability to hold forth on just about any topic, that smaller subset of things I know absolutely nothing about includes "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf".

Let me know if you have to write a scholarly paper on bad science fiction films of the Fifties and Sixties ...

I'm supposed to be writing my montly President's letter for our organizational newsletter, and I can't think of a thing. What's your topic? Maybe thinking about your paper will break something loose for my article.
Trilby • Oct 4, 2005 3:31 pm
I'm supposed to analyze the play WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF and say things like, what the major theme is (Illusion vs. Reality) (Biology vs. History) and stuff like that. Problem is--I don't know the material well enough to really talk about it--I'm just learning the stuff. Like, what is the Seed of the play? What is the Counter Through-action? Yeah, stuff I don't really know. You could write about Illusion Vs. Reality for your letter--it IS getting on to Samhain.
dar512 • Oct 4, 2005 5:12 pm
Bri,

First you have to know what the teacher thinks those phrases mean. Somewhere in your previous materials (or in the lectures) they were probably explained.

I assume you read the play. Have you read it more than once? I find that helps.

Now pretend your best friend is sitting in your living room. You've both read the play and she asks you what you think it's all about. What would you say to him/her? Phrase it conversationally. There's your rough draft for the theme of the play.

You have lots of good ideas, Bri. Just get 'em lined up and write 'em down.
Griff • Oct 4, 2005 5:39 pm
I'm supposed to be writing a major review of the literature on teaching methods for youts with autism, so I can't write your paper. I don't know a thing about your play, but I know your Prof is gay, so make it about sexuality.
dar512 • Oct 13, 2005 12:18 pm
So. How'd the paper turn out?
limey • Oct 13, 2005 6:34 pm
Does anyone else get a headache from Wolf's post, followed about twelve hours later by Bri's :worried: ?
busterb • Oct 13, 2005 7:04 pm
Damn that word scared me. impotence as in http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&q=impotence
Trilby • Oct 13, 2005 7:10 pm

- thought that might cheer you up a bit. don't mention it. it's my pleasure
Trilby • Oct 14, 2005 4:22 pm
It did cheer me. Thanks. It's a good word.
BigV • Oct 14, 2005 4:30 pm
It's more than a word, it's what's for dinner.
Trilby • Oct 14, 2005 7:53 pm
BigV----! You know me soooo well!

Actually, haven't been getting ANY. Remember the professor? He's baaaaaack. He's kinda rubbing my nose in my poverty and inability to write a decent paper. Round and round we go...
BigV • Oct 14, 2005 8:12 pm

[unsolicited advice]

Just starve the mf of what makes him tick: attention. Ignore him to death. I guarantee you'll be better off for it. Just walk away clean, man.

BigV--you are so right and so very, very right! Lots of attention, ego polishing, the worship of most of his female students, MY worship and awe, my sheer joy at being at least ON his list of people who matter to him (after his wife, two daughters, mother) on and on. The fact that I haven't let go yet makes me look suspiciously like a masochist. I'm in therapy. If I don't figure out all my 'daddy' issues pretty damn soon--I'm going to crash my car into wolf's hospital and make them take me!
wolf • Oct 15, 2005 2:24 am
You'll have a hard time getting it up the steps.

Someone has already tried.
wolf • Oct 15, 2005 2:25 am
He apologized later.

Maybe in your experience, but not in mine.

Tastes salty. Don't think it doesn't. Plus, will put your eye out. ;)

Really, don't beat yourself up about this. And stop listening to the commitee in your head. Second on BigV's msg. Dr. Smallpenis has serious problems; he's not worth your heartache. He's accomplished much, yet the insecure bastard wants more than his fair share.

If this is still a problem, is it practical to change schools? Maybe it's too much to ask of yourself to have him around especially if he's part the program you are in and you have to deal with him academically.

You go girl!

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. Do you have to do any more of this kind of writing? If so, go out and buy a copy of either "Cliff's Notes" or "Sprinks Notes" for WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF. These Notes have exactly what instructors ask for. Yes, it's too late for that paper, but if you want to learn how to do that sort of thing, you can see it in print on a play that you have read. Or, just go to the bookstore and skim the Notes in the aisle or at their coffee shop.

Or, for the next analysis you have to write, you can skim the Notes before reading the book and then you know what to be looking out for. You don't want to plagurize the Notes, but absorb the ideas and write yourself.
wolf • Oct 15, 2005 11:54 pm
Oh how I miss the Monarch notes. I always thought they were better than the Cliff's.
Trilby • Oct 18, 2005 10:36 am
Proof positive that there are no longer any standards for English: I got an A+ (I'm not making that up) on my suck-y paper. I'm stunned. And, pleased. But, there can't be any standards anymore.

Oh, well! Gotta take the good where ya can, right? :)
wolf • Oct 18, 2005 11:20 am
I am always very highly critical of what I write.

The only time I can be honest about something like that is if I find something years later, read it, and realize, "Wow, that just totally fucking rocked." Then I have a hard time putting together in my head that I actually wrote that.
BigV • Oct 18, 2005 1:15 pm
:STANDING OVATION:
:RAUCOUS APPLAUSE:

Congratulations, Bri! :thumb: :thumb:

You got what you deserved. Don't go blaming the teacher. Take a little responsibility. And a bow. Way to go.
Trilby • Oct 18, 2005 1:34 pm
 I love it here!

Thanks!
marichiko • Oct 18, 2005 10:40 pm
YEA, BRIANNA! :celebrat:

Of course, there are still standards! Just now everyone gets to live up to YOURS! ;)

Gosh, I totally relate to that.

Bri, it's entirely possible that you are being over critical about your work:) In fact, given the grade you got, your propensity to g ive yourself a hard time and your obvious intelligence, I'd take say it's very likely.
Queen of the Ryche • Oct 21, 2005 10:38 pm
Hooray Bri! And ditto Wolf and Dana.
I still don't know how I managed to graduate "with honors". Guess since I was an English major I could mostly BS my way through essays instead of studying for multipile choice tests or memorizing the periodic chart. All I had to do was compare Beowulf to Gawain, or something like that.
