Interesting music videos

The art of the music video has been lost in a whirlwind of suck. However, I found one today that contained no rump shakin, no bling, no messianic posing on a clifftop in the rain, no sex, nobody making the \m/ sign. It was kind of refreshing. And it's really beautifully done.

From fark.com: Grandaddy's new music video was programmed in Applesoft II on a 1979 Apple ][+ with 48K of RAM. Seriously.

Yah, chalk up another retro-cool bandwagon victim, but the execution was brilliant, I thought.

Anyone else have an example of a music video that you would never find Eminem in?

I'm partial to the "Devil went down to Georgia" claymation.

Down Under and Who Can It Be Now by Men at Work.

And anything by Peter Gabriel.

I didn't realize MTV still had videos.

You wouldn't happen to have a video link, would you?
Happy Monkey • Sep 21, 2005 11:42 am
No, but it is hidden on Primus' "Rhinoplasty" CD, and it is on their recent CD/DVD combo release. I'm sure it can be found on the net, though.

Does the Granddaddy video qualify as a lost art?
dar512 • Sep 21, 2005 12:51 pm
I recorded "MTV's 100 Top Videos" in 1985. I still pull those tapes out from time to time.
wolf • Sep 21, 2005 1:02 pm
Oh wow!! Now that is cooler than cool.

Yes, in that it doesn't follow the "let's hire a major Hollywood director to make a million-dollar video of our star writhing around with a bunch of models" template. The little program was written with an eye toward artistry, and the shot at the end was cool too.

That being said, Britney Spears in that "Toxic" video is just....hot. Trashy, but hot.

Oh, good. I'm not the only middle-aged man with a dark secret lust.

I really like the Green Day video for "wake me up when September ends." It's cool.

My favorite videos of all time (in no particular order):

A-ha - Take on Me
Peter Gabriel - Big Time
Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer
Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity

It is pretty impressive and super-cool, so I doubt it was sass... but that is wolf's call because she wrote it.

I might have to drive up to Chicago and borrow that tape - I would love to see some of those videos again. :p

No, not at all. You have a piece of MTV history from when MTV was cool.
dar512 • Sep 22, 2005 9:44 am
Ah. The limitations of the written word. Sometimes it's hard to tell.

Anyway, that was close to the end of my MTV watching days. And not long after that, I stopped getting cable. I'd probably still get cable if MTV was still good.

Don't know if it's interesting but the strangest music video I ever saw was by a band called Tool and the track was called "Stinkfoot" i watch it now and again and even after all these years i still cant fathom out what it's meant to be about????.
Happy Monkey • Sep 22, 2005 7:09 pm
"Badger Badger Badger Badger" has a pretty good video...
wertzs • Sep 22, 2005 8:59 pm
The Tool song is actually called "Stinkfist" but MTV wouldn't allow that to be shown on their wholesome, pure channel. Pretty much all of Tool's videos are similar to that one. A few are done with claymation using stop-motion photography. They all have pretty dark themes and most are almost impossible to figure out unless you are into the band.

Pearl Jam - Do The Evolution wins best video from me.

Scream by Michael and janet Jackson.. Their dance steps are crazy!! Until now, it's still the most expensive video ever made.
WabUfvot5 • Sep 23, 2005 6:15 am
I always liked Nirvana - Heart Shaped Box. If you want a nostalgia trip try to find Baltimora - Tarzan Boy. Funny stuff. I suppose most the black metal vids I see are nothing to write home about.

warch • Oct 22, 2005 9:00 pm
Fatboy Slim- Weapon of Choice with the delightful Christopher Walken and Praise You - I'm a sucker for guerilla dance ensembles.
