Fancy moving on to birthdays, everyone - and any interesting connections with the day?

Like I'm 18 June - same day as Paul McCartney and also the Battle of Waterloo. Not exactly anything you can mix and match (well, nothing that springs immediately to mind). Still nice to share the same space as the famous: Napoleon , Duke of Wellies and an ex-Beatle - wooooooh! Maybe someone out there has a better combination - shouldn't be that difficult...

I will note that against my birth date as something of extreme significance _ ex hubs (or rather disposal of same) should definitely take precedence over ex Beatles (Ringo and Paul must be well into pension age by now anyway)....

And for me reading glasses. I'm always pushing mine to the top of my head, and searching frantically around for them, a spare pair would be nice. I could then walk around the house with TWO pairs of reading glasses on top of my head, wondering where I'd misplaced them.

Oh, and big bottles of aspirin for my arthritis. A walker would be nice, but I could make do with a cane in a pinch (good for clubbing boy scouts attempting to help me across the street)! :D

I make it a point to avoid telling people my age, especially at work. I always have to go through a "Really? No, seriously??" ordeal, and sometimes even have to fish out my driver's license. And in the end, I inevitably lose respect since I turn out to be younger than people think I am.

Also, (as he pads his post count), ashke, thank you for including me on your list. A couple of questions: 1 -- what does your user title mean? and 2 -- could you explain the difference in mean age and median age and why they're two different things and yet are the same number. Pretend you're explaining it to a six year old, because in the following forty I didn't learn anything new about statistics. Thanks in advance.
wolf • Sep 9, 2005 1:12 pm
Mean is the average you learned to do in school. That means that you add up all the numbers and divide by the number of numbers.

The median is the actual middle. The median is a more stable measure than the "average" because the average gets pulled +/- by extremely high and low values (like Buddha ...) If the mean and the median are the same, that usually means that you have a nice bell curve-y distribution.

You don't want to know about the mode. You just don't.
ashke • Sep 9, 2005 1:25 pm
@_@ I just went back to the median formula. Ergh, I'm wrong! The median age now should be 36 instead of 35. :wstupid:

I suppose I could add mode since it'll make up the 3 Ms. Mode is the value that occurs most often.

BigV: My user title means "How are you?" in Chinese.
BigV • Sep 9, 2005 1:53 pm
wolf: Thank you. That's very helpful.

ashke: Thank you, also very helpful. Your English is impeccable, can you render your title into phonetic English? I'd like to know how to say "How are you?" in Chinese. But the character set there utterly defeats me.
Trilby • Sep 9, 2005 3:23 pm
Could everybody just stop wondering about how to say shit in Chinese? For ONCE? Everytime some poor Chinese dude or dudette (yet to see) saunters by here everyone hails them for interpretations! It's really quite embarrassing. Learn your own Chinese! They've obviously learned a bit of English! Sheesh!

ashke • Sep 10, 2005 2:03 am
BigV: 你 "Knee" 好 "Howl" 吗 "Mah"?

That's the closest phonetically I can think of. And if you want to say "Bite me" in Chinese, you shouldn't be so literal about it. Direct translations rarely work well... It looks kinda weird from here. A better alternative would probably have been 闪开.But it's a bit rude, tsk tsk.

Brianna: It's okay, I don't mind translating stuff. But then, I guess if someone really wanted to pronounce it right, they should hear it from a native speaker. The cadence may be quite different from what you read phonetically. Btw, I grew up trilingual so it's not like English's my second language. ^_^;;; Thanks for the concern though.

Speaking of toys, I went to my first "toys" party a few months ago. It was a BLAST!! The lady giving the party made even the shy girls feel comfortable, and after some drinks and jello shots, everyone loosened up and had a great time. Afterwards, when it was time for us to place our orders, she went into another room and had everyone come in one at a time so nobody would feel embarrassed about what they were ordering. After you placed your order she gave you a Q-tip with a warming gel that was supposed to give you an instant orgasm when applied to your clit. Most everyone took theirs into the bathroom and came out smiling and doing a little dance. (Don't remember what the name of it was....)
This particular one was called "Slumber Parties". They have a website. I highly recommend those parties for a fun girls night out! :thumb:

Y'know most of the time you really aren't thinking about that. First couple of weeks, some of the fresh-out-of-college kids seem very young. But not all and it soon wears off as they get into the adult education style. Within a pretty short time I found I was just relating to them as I would to anyone else. They for their part, never made me feel uncomfortable or acted any differently towards me than they do with each other.

I'm 50 now. At 43, I started working for the University News, the student paper at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Mrs Elspode, who is six years younger, was finishing up her degree, and had obtained the positions of Advertising Manager and Arts and Entertainment editor. I sort of got absorbed into being first a casual editor, then a ghost writer, then an actual reviewer, and finally ended up as Photo Editor.

After doing this for about two or three months, I found out that I was supposed to actually be enrolled in order to qualify to work for the paper. I therefore took a one credit hour course (local KC geology), which took me all of two weekends to complete.

During this experience, I was always the oldest one in the house. I usually don't feel the generation gap too acutely, but I sure did at this time. Editing the writings of college students (that one hour is all the college I ever had) was a real eye-opener in terms of grasping the difference in maturity, perseverence, seriousness...even literacy.

I'm not saying I felt superior, that's not it. I just felt - old.

I turned 65 in July.
Graduated High School in '59
Enlisted in the Coast Guard in '59 in hopes of seeing the world, but only made it to about 25 countries plus three regions of the Antarctic.
Retired from the Coast Guard in 1980.

I'm hoping to be able to go back to school in the next couple of years. I got my ASEET in '76 & really made little use of it. I took some more college courses when I was in my mid 40's and thoroughly enjoyed it. If & when I go back, I plan to enjoy it a lot more - just taking what I want to take (& maybe showing off a little because I have been studying the things I enjoy all my life).

I'm in my early thirties. I chuckled at my pairings with Ibram (in whatever thread that was) based on our youth.

Not that I didn't take it as a compliment. He's a cool guy.

59, vintage 1947 baby boomer and the silver 60 happens next July 13th. The actual mode of celebration is yet to be determined but my younger relatives have already booked me a wing-walking flight on the 'Utterly Butterly', a really beautiful bright yellow bi-plane :worried: I'm also going back to Uni. Bristol I hope, it being my nearest and best and not yet finally decided which option to take.

I have already returned to work because although fun at first, I eventually found that retirement sucks. I really think the best is yet to come.

That is awesome wolf - Yes I should be!! !! !! My ex actually opened my first email account as yesman065 and when I asked her what the heck it meant she fessed up to not really knowing what year I was born - after 17 years together I took it as a sign. Now I think its too funny to change!

Could happen, for sure -- and the thing might only have the one-R spelling variant, just to compound the mischief. As a Spanish speaker I happen to prefer the two-R and keep the word closer to its Spanish root.

so I'll correct it if I post an updated summary.

Hi new guy from Georgia:) , mad old bat from England here, which brings me neatly to the point. I think.

60 this year, July 13th and a Friday, good excuse for a long weekend except for the Friday 13th bit:worried: Anyway, my nieces & nephews & godkids etc had planned to send me wingwalking to celebrate but the Utterly Butterly, a truly beautiful yellow biplane has changed hands and is now in the possession of a French cosmetic company and they aren't allowing odd bods to walk the wings just to celebrate birthdays and such, which is a bit mean. Booo to the French for that.

My dilemma now is what to do to celebrate. The kids sent me up in a balloon on my 55th, Orient Express at 50, but what next...? Any ideas? What do other people/cultures do to mark these important ages? July 13th is the day before Bastille so a day in Paris might be amusing, Bastille is just an excuse for a street party but very French... so any ideas or thoughts would be welcome.

Someone said early on in this thread that the average age here at The Cellar seems to be higher than many 'Net fora, and I think that's true. At least for me, since I tend to spend so much of my time on piercing and bodymod-related sites, where the average age sometimes seems to get stuck at around 14, it's quite refreshing.

For this old gal, anyway.

American movie joke--there's a long series of slasher films called "Friday the 13th" where teens get slaughtered at that camp (later movies moved to different locations so the idea never got stale )
CzinZumerzet • Mar 7, 2007 8:53 am
Oh right I can see it now, even if I didn't watch the movies I recall the genre. Sorry LumberJim but it did make me wonder!

How about commissioning a portrait? Whether phot, watercolour or oil it would be a wonderful way to mark the event. I'm guessing you want some action though - how about Vegas for the weekend? You can fly over the Grand Canyon and pretend you are wing walking :) Or New York with helicopter trip?

Wow, I'm reluctant to bring down the average. 24.

It's good to see a mix of ages. I tried posting in a forum with a high general intelligence but a low age. It was an absolutely infuriating mix of well reasoned arguments, sophomoric ideology, and absolute conviction to unreasonable statements.

I might not agree with everyone here, but at least you've been thinking stuff through for a few years. (;

Glad to be here,

It is looking like New York or Cuba and my vote is for New York for a long weekend. Love the helicopter trip idea... We have family in NY so would kill several birds with one stone and it'll be Cuba later in the year by the look of it. I have only visited NY before in the winter so this will be totally different but love the city almost as much as I love London. I also quite like the general idea of a portrait but will save that one for the seventieth!
