See how long it takes you to find the human face in this pic
How would I go about posting an animated .gif?
You can post them, but they have to be pretty small file sizes. Most animated GIFs are too big.
Oh what the heck, I'll bump this bad boy ...

Is this one of those magic eyes, or is there another trick.
I can't do the magic eye things. I guess my eyes aren't magicamal.
Look at 7 o'clock in the image. You'll see the face. No trick. It's just a where's Waldo type thing.
Oh! Hahahhaa. That's kind of creepy!
Now I see where's he's bean.
glatt! you gave it away! :(
It's been 3 days. I think the statute of limitations was up. In other words, I don't see anyone clamoring to solve it. ;)
LOL
I was squinting and leaning back and everything, thinking it was a magic eye picture.
Doh - I just realized what you meant by "magic eye picture."
glatt! you gave it away! :(
Sorry! I figured that anyone who wanted to play the game and look for it would look for it. They wouldn't scroll down hoping for an answer.
I have to admit I saw it immediately.
Not boasting, that's the way it is sometimes.
Although I do have a vague memory of seeing it before, which would have helped enormously.
Accidental optical illusion...

Nope.
This one I don't get at all :)
it doesn't appear to you that the woman's standing on a floating / flying platform with the shadow cruising along underneath? That's what I see.

Explanation from the Doctor ...
Perception is not reality - it is perception. Reality remains reality and our perception simply attempts to represent it, but fails to do so accurately. In this case our eyes (ie retina) receive the actual image perfectly. Photoreceptors have overlapping fields of vision and these overlapping fields of raw data (i see light) travel through several levels of "processing" (ie perception). This starts in the ganglia within the retina and continues and is completed in the visual cortex and occipital lobes. For a variety of reasons this processing may actually distort the reality as is seen here. Sometimes it is merely a physiologic limitation, sometimes our brain is attempting to accomplish another goal other than the pure representation of reality and we get the situation we see here. I believe the presence of perfect squares arranged into perfect circles is the problem - our brain "wants" those squares to travel in a linear fashion, but they don't, and it creates a perceptual tension. It would be interesting to see if the phenomenon is eliminated by using small circles rather than squares
Not so much an optical illusion, but, it makes ya look twice...

Love the zebra shadows.
Infimonki's picture has an effect on us similar to when a person goes on TV with a shirt with thin contrasting stripes. The cameras are usually good at accurately representing what is in front of them, but certain patterns hit the hardware in just the wrong way and produce strobing effects. Likewise, our usually (moderately) accurate sensors aren't ready to cope with inputs like that.
I suspect the angles of the squares is critical, because they trick the brain into thinking the circle at that point is aligned with the edge of the squares, which makes us project the circle in the wrong direction, causing the circles to look overlapping and entangled.

Wow - you said that SO much better than I ... Gonna send that to him.
I think my brain asploded.
I like the zebras too, made it my background.
My wife is making Xmas cards, so I asked her if she could incorporate this in some of them:
If you look at it for a few seconds you'll think that there are blinking lights at the corners of the squares.
I'm trying to find something similar in color that can be made to look like a tree.
the lines are a little too fat, but something like this?
Yes, like that, except I can't see the blinking dots in the color version.
That's partially a function of the lines being too thick and also somewhat the contrast in value. Yellow and purple may work better. Lemme see.
This is a bit better. There is a red/green combo in pigment that is particularly electric. I don't think it works as well with monitors. Though maybe it's and RGB vs CMYK thing. It could also be that the pigments themselves have an intensity that can't be mixed with CMYK

Sometimes the answer is a simple one:
I agree...
lol
But who looks at a Christmas card for minutes...?
(I couldn't get any of them to work for me, but that may be the monitor)

I think the scintillating grid actually has lighter colored dots at the intersections, which give the blinking light effect.
I saw blinkies on both of the color ones too. Made me seasick. I see them as soon as I look at it too. They're fainter on the color ones, but I see 'em.
Well, those are supposed to work better when you view them from farther away, and you're way out in Ohio.
Yeah, plus I'm drunk.
I'm kidding. I kid.

Yeah I started dicking with making brighter dots and then was all like, fuck it I'm going to go take a nap and not clean the kitchen.
Looks like a leaping Great White. It ain't. It was shot from beneath, near the surface.
Kinda illusiony.

Doesn't look like a Great White, jus sayin.
ETA - Maybe it is - I thought at first it was a Black Tipped, but some images show Great Whites with similar markings (shrug)
Dolphin!

I'll go with black tip reef shark, per Classic, and Wikipedia.

So what's with the baby shark? No one seems to care about the baby shark. Is it a baby shark? It looks like a baby shark to me.
Think of the children. :(
Are you talking bout the remora?
I don't know. What's a remora?
(Whatsa remora with you? Ba Dum Dum)
Looks like either a baby shark or a tattoo of a baby shark, on the bottom of the shark.
ohhh, I googled it.
Never heard of it before, I guess that's what it is!
It would have to be a tiny white, judging by the size of the suckerfish (aka remora or sharksucker).
ETA: oops, I see I was late
Suckerfish get that big?
OMFG, quit making such a big deal about it, you.
Not you, Scrive. ;)

IIRC, there are some that try to "attach" themselves to scuba divers.
There is probably a video somewhere, but I'd be making a BIG DEAL about it so I won't look for one. :3_eyes:
Here is another for you...
If you leaf me now
You'll take away the biggest part of me...
Oooh oooh oooh oooh no baby please don't go
Approx 5 seconds.
Again, not boasting - I have my own problems...
We had the afternoon performance of the Nativity on Monday.
One of the Innkeepers was playing up all the way through - headress on, headress off, whispering to the children next to her, fussing about the children sat in front of her, turning round and trying to fiddle with the wall behind her when she should have been singing etc, etc.
She was too far away for me to get her attention. I assumed she was in the class above ours. So I spoke to Mrs N at the "briefing" the morning after (the children still had an evening performance to do).
"Little girl with glasses at the back."
Nope, no one there with glasses.
Whaa?
Oh and then T slips in.
T is in MY class.
All it took was a headdress (like one for a shepherd) for me not to recognise her.
Damn. Had I known she was one of mine I'd have had a quiet word. As it was, she was mentioned as behaving badly in front of the whole cast.
Here is another for you...
another what? am i supposed to find something there or something?
Yeh same as the last one I posted. Find the HUMAN.
A face human or a whole human?

Um. 0.5 seconds?
Is a face going to jump out at me or something?
lol - I saw it pretty quick as well.
nope no face jumping out. Just a time waster. Apparently not enough.
my mouse pointer just happened to be pointing right at it when i scrolled up to see it. that was EASY!

Which of the two colored shapes in this illusion is rotating? If you guessed ‘both,’ guess again. Only the outer red ring is actually moving; the blue inner core is stationary. But every time the star-shaped projections on the two objects line up perfectly, the blue shape appears to ‘jerk’ backwards, or counter-clockwise, almost like a gear slotting into place. What causes the illusion? Dutch mathematician and cognitive psychologist Dr. Peter A. van der Helm writes: “[T]he rhombi jump backwards from one wheel notch to the next, and we think the visual system mistakes the wheel notch that opens a background area for the one that shut this background area a moment before. This mistake occurs especially when the wheel has a lower background contrast than the stationary shapes…” In layman’s terms, the brain gets confused by the growing and shrinking gaps between the two shapes, and the strength of the illusion depends on the contrast between their colors. Simple, right? Well, maybe not. But it is nifty. See more about the illusion and its variants here: http://bit.ly/GTRICK
If you scroll down to where you can see only the bottom three points of the blue star, the effect disappears.
Damn you, brain, stop lying to me. I know it isn't moving. Stop that.

Explanation: Did this mirage help sink the Titanic? The optical phenomenon called Fata Morgana can make strange shapes or a false wall of water appear above a watery horizon. When conditions are right, light reflecting off of cold water will be bent by an unusual layer of warm air above to arrive at the observer from several different angles. A conceptually comparable mirage can make a setting Sun appear strangely distorted or a distant pavement appear wet. One hundred years ago today, such a Fata Morgana mirage might have obscured real icebergs from the clear view of crew onboard the Titanic. Additional evidence for this distortion hypothesis arises from the nearby vessel SS Californian which reported sightings consistent with Fata Morgana mirages. The above Fata Morgana mirage was taken off the US Pacific coast in 2008.

Futility Closet
When Napoleon left France for Elba, his supporters wore violets as a secret sign of their allegiance. This 1815 colour print by Jean-Dominique Etienne Canu, Le Secret du Caporal La Violette, conceals images of the exiled emperor, his wife, and his son. Where are they?
I see them. The boy was the hardest to pick out.
I'll have to come back to it.
I can't see one at present, let alone all three.
Took me quite a while.
Spotted the son first, and then after a long time got the other two - looking for his hat was what set it off in my brain.
I see them. The boy was the hardest to pick out.
This, except I can't find the son.
Got all three now.
Was looking in the wrong direction, if you get what I mean.
It took a while even though I suspected they were in the negative space

I don't know why the son took me so long. I was staring directly at him and wondering if that could be one too, but wasn't seeing it. Then came back later, and he jumped out at me.
How do you know if teh (profile head) is a boy or a mom or whatever?

This is a new one I saw on Brain games the other night and had never seen before.
Look at the yellow dot, which way do the balls rotate, look at the red, they should switch.
http://www.moillusions.com/2013/05/in-which-direction-do-they-spin.html

You can also mess around with the speed by looking at different areas of the orange. It slows down as you look to the edges, speeds up when you look between the two rings of dots. You can almost get the dots to stop orbiting but they they still spin.
Neat. Now stare at the spot between them, and try to see them both spinning in their true direction (both counterclockwise.)

I'm so wasted.
You can also mess around with the speed by looking at different areas of the orange. It slows down as you look to the edges, speeds up when you look between the two rings of dots. You can almost get the dots to stop orbiting but they they still spin.
I suspect this has to do with the distribution of cones and rods in the retina.
Your center of vision (acuity) is via the cones, while night and peripheral vision is via the rods.
The cones see color and refresh rapidly, while the rods see b/w and are slower to refresh.
Neat. Now stare at the spot between them, and try to see them both spinning in their true direction (both counterclockwise.)
If you do that then ever so slightly move your eyes to your right, you can reverse the rotation to clockwise.
Looking about 2:00 from the red dot is the closest I can get to stopping the spin on both sides.
What does this mean? After some excellent Viognier and a Black Russian, I don't know, but I'm sure it's significant.
Like, whoaahh ....
There is a conflict generated in our brains by the use of black and white stripes in the moving dots. The dots are moving at one pace, and I think the stripes actually move within the dots, thereby suggesting a different pace. Both paces are represented in our brains. We flick from one interpretation to another.
There may even be a third interpretation as our brains interpret the dots as holes in a moving screen and the stripes as being the background seen through them, generating a third rate of movement to "perceive".
Seriously, like, whooah.
Oh, that is good. We're all saying jiff now right?

Google Dragon Illusion, there is a pdf you can print in blue green or red. Cut it out, fold it, tape it. Takes about 30 minutes to do.... As I recall... Mine has got to be 6 years old or so, so it's been a while. Interestingly, Kids younger than about 7-8 just can't get it. They can't seem to do the two things you have to do at once in order for the illusion to work in person. You have to cover one eye, while you move but keep your eye on the dragon... OK, three things you have to do. But the kids that get it, love it. It shuts them the Fuck up for the 5 minutes I need to get my customer's attention while I try to sell my snake oil. Love that dragon.
I've got one. They are awesome.
Sent from my iPhone using
TapatalkWe had one on a shelf in our hallway for years. But it got thrown away eventually.
I had the blue one. It helps if the dragon is slightly above eye-level.

Go
here. Stare at the black dot til the picture of the castle appears, if you don't blink or move your eyes, the picture of the castle will appear to be a color image. It is not a color image, it's black & white. If you blink, or move your eyes the teensiest amount, it will revert to b&w.
Kooky.
that is pretty cool
I found that I could make the image appear in the correct color after staring at the dot while the inverted colors were displayed. I also found that I could make the black and white image return by shifting my focus point. But I also found that I could return my focus to the black dot and see it in the correct color again. the moves have to be pretty quick and direct, not moving over the screen much. It's like your retina becomes... "stretched" in a particular color direction and takes a little while to return to it's regular state. While it's "stretched" that image lasts for a few seconds, but the colors only map to the image while the tonal values also match, ie, aligned with the focus on the dot.
Really, you can pick any point on the image and do the same thing, there's nothing super special about the dot except it helps you anchor your focus on one tight spot, rather than fuzzing up the image on your retina.
Remember those Magic Eye pictures? They looked like a bunch on spattery gobbley-gook, until you learned to cross your eyes in a particular way and then an image seemed to jump out of the page. I learned to do that fairly well, and I've tried it with the image above and I'm able to move the separate images together in my field of view to turn her brown eyes blue, to borrow a phrase. She looks like a scary zombie when I do. A pretty zombie to be sure, but with scary looking eyes.
I did that, too.
It's remarkable how much of a difference the eye color makes. I could swear that the face is a different shape and the mouth is open a slightly different amount, but they aren't.

The all wise(ass) internet said it's an optical illusion because the left ends aren't even.
OK, so I wanted to measure and since a ruler on the screen is so plebeian, I made copies of the image and clipped them off in photoshop

I could cut them more accurately than I could draw them.
The .250 and .231 are pretty close, but adding them and comparing to the wide measurement was .200 different. Hmm, average them.
The other end came out perfect which is always as suspect as way off is.
Comparing that .552 to the .581avg shows less than 1/32 of an inch difference. Close enough to prove the internet was right.

Better as a WTF, anyway.
Yeah, that's a better image, wtf-wise, and quality-wise.
I didn't think to look for another version.
I had seen it before, so I knew there was a good one out there. I should have shared it here myself.
She's wearing a skirt and white Capri pants, he's wearing black and white baggy shorts.
Don't say what you see, but...
Do you see it?

It took me a minute. Now I can't see anything else.
What?!
Dog in a bubble... and no comment.
Bubbledog is great, I can actually hear little, muted woofs. Armpitsnaitch is even better.:D

Pretty damn cool.
Even stone-cold sober, that makes me go cross eyed. But I can see it if I ignore the fact that I feel drunk trying to mentally trace the blue lines. :3_eyes:

They should do a zoetrope of romaine lettuce and croutons dressed with parmesan cheese, lemon juice, olive oil, egg, Worcestershire sauce, anchovies, garlic, and black pepper.
THE NEXT POST APPEARS TO BE NSFW, THE PIC IS SFW, BUT I WOULDN'T LOOK AT IT WITH THE BOSS OVER YOUR SHOULDER.

Relax, it's a dog.
They should do a zoetrope of romaine lettuce and croutons dressed with parmesan cheese, lemon juice, olive oil, egg, Worcestershire sauce, anchovies, garlic, and black pepper.
I'm having trouble eating at the moment. But that nearly made me drool all over the library keyboard...
The real thing, not the zoetrope. Although that has the same chance of staying down.
A vagina dog
Are you suggesting a
poon hound?

That's because it's a seizure salad!
No, it's a regular shaped tank.
It's lava but it looks like hell spit up bodies to me.
Yikes. Saw off a slab of that for behind the desk in the sequel to "Devil's Advocate".
What? just a guy and his sheep.
Six Packer fans, five pair of legs.
excellent one.
took me a minute
Looks like his (the man's) feet and lower legs would be in shadow.
There something weird there. Somewhere.
Maybe he's on a foot stool that's lifting him a foot or so off the ground.
Six Packer fans, five pair of legs.
That's Stumpy, in the middle
No stumpy, it's just their mothers aren't around so they're all slouching. :haha:
About the most amazing graffiti I've ever seen...
Yeah, that's fairly awesome.
Stretch Armstrong has let himself go.
Sorry if these are repeats . . .

I don't know what I'm seeing in that 2nd pic...Is that a purse that looks like a dog?

Tilt your head to the left. ;)

Find the panda

I see it when I back up far enough.
That's really cool. When I move the phone, it really pops. But if I hold the phone still at comfortable reading distance, it fades away again. I'm very impressed.
Well, I'll be damned.
I thought he was fuckin with us.
I see it when I back up far enough.
That.
I often keep a few windows open to come back to if I feel like it.
The little reminder icon shows the part that you saw last. The panda dominates it and can't be missed.
This one's pretty good.
All the balls in this image are the same color: brown.

That is amazing!
I see [strike]squares[/strike] rectangles.
:smack:D'oh!!
Oof!, even.
These are two different, separate, non spiraling circles.
Don't look at it too long. I think I may need assistance.

That's a real interesting one.
This one's okay:
See the yellow in this image?
There is no yellow in this image at all.
If you zoom in or look very closely, the yellow band turns white in between two blue stripes.
Blue and yellow are complementary primary colors.
Its not nice to fool old eyes.
On my monitor it's a black band what looks like the yellow band.

Optical disillusionment...

Had to go through this a couple times to understand what's happening.

Somebody get a mop to clean up all that spilled sunshine.
A different kind of optical illusion, WW I the Brits painted a bow wave on ships so u-boats would misjudge their speed.
I wonder if they also flew a long flag on a tilted mast to obscure the exhaust plume from the stacks to match
They were moving just not full tilt boogie the bow wave indicated. Out on the ocean isn't smoke dispersal more a matter of wind?
Did a double take on this one...
Ha! Moment of confusion there.
A four foot mirror on a motorsickle? What could happen? Just to be sure we're as safe as can possibly be, I'll wrap 40 feet of coax around the handle bar...
These guys are definitely not up to no good.
I would post the pic instead of the link if I only knew how.
Jim I made this for another website but they used the same software so it should work here.
I always bring the image to my computer first to see what size it will be and everything is kosher before uploading to this site.
Bruce: Thanks. I tried that several times with no success.
I guess I need guidance on whether to keep posting links or just forget it.
Even if I could get your technique to work, I am not sure how long it takes.
I can post a link quickly and easily and opening them is a matter of seconds.
If anyone feels what I post is not usually to their liking or does not want take the time, they are easy to skip.
I get a black box for videos, but have developed a cut and paste technique (for YouTube, anyway) that takes under a minute.
A link would be faster for my IE system.
I will be content to continue my way if it is not causing trouble.
No problem, you asked. Do whatever works for you.
