Foods made famous by TV shows

I watch way too much TV...

And now I'm getting to a point that I want to try things that they talk about on TV. I'm a huge King of the Hill fan and one of Peggy Hill's specialties is Frito Pie with Wolf brand Chili. I've never made Frito Pie, never heard of Wolf Brand Chili - but it is real and want to give it a try.

Has anyone else done something like this or am I just nuts?

I love Frito Pies. I first heard of them when I lived in Houston. Our Junior High served them up in the cafeteria. Good stuff, good times....

My meal made famous by T.V. was Krispy Kremes. That John Travolta movie about (or not about) Clinton talked about them all through the film. I had never heard of them and then, a few years later, wham! They suddenly started popping up all over Phx.
Clodfobble • Jul 29, 2005 11:10 am
I ate Frito Pie out of the school cafeteria every single day for more than a year.

If you don't want to make it yourself, Sonic also serves Frito Pies. They're great!

Marge Simpson makes Jellybean cookies... but I don't think I'll try those any time soon.
Happy Monkey • Jul 29, 2005 3:23 pm
I wonder what happens to jelly beans in the oven. I'd expect they'd melt and caramelize.

Ah, Frito Pie...a big perk of growing up in the western states.

Here's an interesting version:

Lately, watching reruns of "Dead Like Me" on On Demand has made me crave Pecan Waffles with Extra Crispy Bacon. I've never had pecan waffles, but I bet they're pretty damn good!

Pork Chops and Apple Shaush.

I have a fondness for eating Jiffy Pop Pop Corn while watching the movie Real Genius.

Does that count?

I also feel a certain lack in my life for not having a cool, trendy coffee shop with sofas instead of tables that I can hang out in, drink overpriced, foul-tasing coffee, and meet seemingly interesting, but actually shallow, friends.

I had to read this twice. Somewhere people have never had Wolf brand chili or frito pies???? But then, the closest I've come to having a Philly steak is a Hot Pocket! Sad, huh? Maybe someone'll send me a real one......

*fainting dead away* Never had pecan waffles?! What? How can this BE? Pecan waffles are simply orgasmic--nice and hot, with tons of pecans and warm butter and syrup...OMG! Once again, credit WaffleHouse with the best ones. Another goodie is blueberry and pecan French Toast! Divine!

I have a few (real and fictional). I'm leaving off the TV show/movie so you can guess.

Cheesy Poofs
Grape Nehi (Hint: pronounced 'knee-high')
Lollipop
Adam's Ribs
Coors Beer
Martini (shaken not stirred)
Undertoad • Jul 30, 2005 12:33 pm
Tea, Earl Grey, hot.

(Picard's usual beverage on Star Trek TNG, ordered to a computer which replicated it. At the time of first airing, this order caused some conversation on the trek newsgroup, because by Picard's time he would just say the more natural "hot Earl Grey tea" and not have to construct a downward heirarchy for a dumber computer.)

Cheesy Poofs - South Park
Lollipop - Kojak
Martini (shaken not stirred) - James Bond

Well, did I get 3 out of six...?
jinx • Jul 30, 2005 2:05 pm
Grape Nehi is M*A*S*H

So is Adam's Ribs ... wasn't that the rib place in Chicago that Hawkeye wanted ribs from?

Correct!

Can anyone guess the Coors Beer?

Heres the answer

Some foods are not enhanced by such associations.

Stand By Me and blueberry pie, for example.
Happy Monkey • Jul 30, 2005 9:12 pm
Twin Peaks and Cherry Pie, on the other hand...

or the Simpsons and Floor Pie.

I am quite ashamed that I did not mention that one. It was one of my favorite shows.

ooh ...

Bibi-Babka!! I hadn't thought about one in ages.

And then, of course, there is one show that was about nothing, but, apparently, food ...

Chocolate Babka
Mulligatawny
Poppy Seed Muffin
Junior Mints
The Big Salad

Grape Nehi: Actual beverage in the South. I run into it upon occasion. As noted, Radar's beverage of choice.

Coors: Smokey and the Bandit.

I think I'll expound on proper Philly cheesesteaks in a separate thread...
Undertoad • Jul 31, 2005 8:32 am
"Heineken? Fuck that shit! Pabst Blue Ribbon!"
Happy Monkey • Jul 31, 2005 9:03 am
A turn to the sci-fi side:
It's a strange thing, but every sentient race has its own version of these Swedish meatballs. I suspect it's one of those great universal mysteries which will either never get explained or which will drive you mad if you ever learned the truth.
Spoo is/are (the plural of spoo is spoo) small, white, pasty, mealy critters, rather worm-like, and generally regarded as the ugliest animals in the known galaxy by just about every sentient species capable of starflight, with the possible exception of the pak'ma'ra, who would simply recommend a more rigorous program of exercise.

Good luck with that, grasshopper. I've tried to get the Phluffian's to see reason on the cheesesteak thing, but they resist. The are very territorial about it.

Which reminds me of 'The Big Sandwich' from this TV show.

hint below

We're not having a big sandwich!
This is Nanucket, its not San Francisco. We are a simple people. We fish our waters, we till our lands, we eat a big sandwich.

Matt is one of us, even if he's now living in Arkansas.

Damn tootin'. I was back in Fluffya a couple of weekends back for Anthrocon and one of the first things I did was score a decent cheesesteak from one of the Drexel gut trucks (they DO have good cheesesteaks there...)

In fact, my LJ has an extensive trip report:

Four fried chickens and a Coke.

And some dry white toast please.
Trilby • Aug 9, 2005 9:04 am

I want you to hold it between your knees.
Queen of the Ryche • Aug 9, 2005 10:13 am

You need to watch out in Waffle House...sometimes, those little brown things in the waffles have legs, and are not pecans.
busterb • Aug 9, 2005 8:23 pm
Years ago, when driving a truck. I stopped in a place in El Paso and ordered pecan pie.
The sob had peanuts on it. Hey I'm from the south and really know peanuts from pecans.

No joke.

I think the button should say "How youse doin'?" But even if it did, I still wouldn't pay ten bucks for it.
Trilby • Aug 10, 2005 8:42 am
This isn't exactly a TV show but, here goes:

Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun!
Queen of the Ryche • Aug 10, 2005 1:48 pm
Krusty's McRibwich.
wolf • Aug 10, 2005 1:55 pm
Crabby Patties.
Trilby • Aug 10, 2005 3:32 pm
If you're going to have a McRibwich you could order me a WhatjamaChicken?

The Crabby pattie sounds good--I've never had one because I've always eaten at the Chum Bucket. Plankton runs it...do you know him?
