7/22/2005: Ugly dog

Image

Multiple people sent me this ugly dog photo, for which the pup involved won an Ugliest dog contest -- and rightly so. Sam is a hairless Chinese Crested, 14 years old, with cataracts, what looks like a skin condition...

...But Sam doesn't know or care. And that's why he's a Friday image.

Above all, what makes Sam special is that "he's so sweet," Lockhee says. Of her four dogs, Sam is her favorite.

"I've never had a dog this in love with me," she says, "And shortly after I rescued him (I took him in as a rescue), I was diagnosed with cancer. I had to be in radioactive isolation, where you're away from people for almost a week. But they let me take one dog. And I chose Sam. And he just made that time so much fun. He's so crazy. I've just never been this close to a dog before."

Yuk! Looks like someone fed it after midnight or something...

This dog wouldn't have to dress up for Halloween. He even has the crazy eye going for him. Looks like he has had a rough life on the streets, with a hard core drug habit. Then you read what the owner said about him and he reminds me of the wrinkled old lady who made my first apartment by myself enjoyable. She was blind and made the best oatmeal cookies. Like the ugly dog it was best she could not see herself. Everyone just saw her heart. Much like the owner of the dog just sees his heart. Still he is scary looking.

ummm... I think we now know the reason why you can't be near other people.

That is just toooo funny!!
glatt • Jul 22, 2005 1:16 pm
Yes. That is one ugly dog.

I think 'd try to gnaw my own foot off too. If I had a better dental plan.

so that is what happens if you throw a NYC rat in a microwave.

Anyone else reminded of Jabba the Hut's little pointy-eared pal from "Return of the Jedi"?
Hobbs • Jul 22, 2005 2:15 pm
Hate to tell you this, but this is not a picture of a dog. It's a picture of my old Grampa Saully. Got to be. He had that same hair and crazy-ass grin.

How sad and geeky is it that I know the creature's name is Salacious Crumb?
lookout123 • Jul 22, 2005 3:06 pm
it isn't sad and geeky, at all. in fact, i'm glad you typed it because i've been sitting here using what little selfcontrol i have to keep from displaying my immense nerdness by typing it.

thank you wolf. ;)

Just sayin'.
Queen of the Ryche • Jul 22, 2005 3:38 pm
ooh John. With that humor, you are most welcome in the Cellar.
melidasaur • Jul 22, 2005 4:00 pm
John... good one, dude.

To me, it looks like the dog was once stuffed by its beloved owner and kept on a shelf for prosperity. Then, the house caught on fire and the stuffed animal was found in the rubble... and the owner decided that it would have to keep the charred remains.

mmmmmmmmmm................ deep fried dog.
I hope this dog isn't as miserable as he appears.
He looks really RADIOACTIVE. Without the isolation.

Reminds me of a scene from FRIENDS. Someone has one of those hairless cats. Joey asks "What the hell is that?!??!" After he's told it's a cat, he asks "Why's it inside out?!??!"

Correction:
After he's told it's a HAIRLESS cat...
Hobbs • Jul 22, 2005 5:50 pm
Oh, yeah. Now I see it.

You were right the first time. ;)
But welcome to the Cellar anyway.

Two wrongs make a right?

IMO pussies just don't look right without hair om 'em. Makes you feel like you're doing something wrong.
Trilby • Jul 22, 2005 11:23 pm
I think it's wonderful that the little dog is loved for WHO HE IS and not what we, as a demented, superficial, unwholesome, society, would have him be. He is the essence of beauty, the joy of truth, the very vessel of significance!

And no, I'm not high. I just finished JANE EYRE and I feel all...gushy!

Those must the opening words of "Little Mongrels"...
Leah • Jul 24, 2005 7:15 pm
Poor dogs got a face only his mother could love. Actually I take that back, make that his whole body only his mother could love. Still cute though. :eyebrow:
xoxoxoBruce • Jul 24, 2005 8:13 pm

cute
adj. cut·er, cut·est

1. Delightfully pretty or dainty.

2. Obviously contrived to charm; precious: "[He] mugs so ferociously he kills the humor it's an insufferably cute performance" (David Ansen).

3. Shrewd; clever.

You're really stretching that one, Leah.
sandra77 • Jul 25, 2005 1:32 am
That dog doesn't even look alive. He looks mummified.

Do you think that skin comes from running around without sunscreen??

Yeah, a face only a mother could love...and a father to throw stones at.

RIP, Sam.

World's Ugliest Dog dies at 14
Trilby • Nov 22, 2005 3:51 pm
Sam, we hardly knew ye.

They just now found out he's dead?! Come on, people, come to class!

Any pictures of the new champion?

My coworkers were so entranced by the image that they set it as the wallpaper on the Crisis Director's computer.

The Crisis Director is a lady of somewhat delicate sensibility (not too delicate, of course. She's worked at our place for nearly 10 years now) and may well have had a freakout this morning.

I can't wait to find out.
kelliekd • Nov 28, 2005 6:37 pm
umm..Wolf...I hate to break it to you...but...he died recently..sorry
xoxoxoBruce • Nov 28, 2005 7:27 pm
She knows that, kelliekd. That's why she asked about the NEW champion. ;)
Leah • Nov 28, 2005 7:44 pm
I don't know about the ugliest dog but I certainly have the naughtiest dog in the world. Went over to my sisters house this morning and my sisters dog Lucy (Lucy the beagle) opened most of the Christmas pressies that were under the tree. It was rather funny but now I know what I'm getting (well it's chewed up :) ) We had to laugh, she was so cute sitting there amongst all the torn up Christmas paper and chewed up gifts. :headshake
