Show Off Your Fish Here!

Elspode • Jun 19, 2005 5:01 pm
We've got a dog thread. We've got a cat thread. Why not a fish thread?

Here's my two Oscars. Both approximately 7.5" long, and still growing, I fear. They live in a 30 gallon tall tank along with 3 pink convict cichlids (who haven't grown a centimeter since I put the Oscars in when the Oscars were about the same 2" length as they are). This pair go through a dozen small feeder comets in about three minutes, but they aren't real picky about what they eat, so I feed them dried krill, four or five different varieties of ciclid pellets, flake, frozen shrimp and/or frozen krill in a nonspecific rotation.

They are voracious eaters, but the Tiger Oscar (the one that isn't mostly orange) is actually eating right from my fingers. The orange guy would take my finger off, given the chance. He is by far the more aggressive of the two.

Cool fish, Els! As a pisces I know my fish! ;)

I guess it would be inappropriate to use the :apaw: smilie, but we don't have any fishy ones, so :apaw: will have to do.

Anytime that smiley is used (most notably in wolf's signature) my stepson points at the screen and screams "A clue! A clue!"

Why yes, as a matter of fact, I do have one ...

Cute story clod. I know someone who knows Steve ...

Okay, the clownfish is named Nemo, which makes sense...but what is that gorgeous anemone's name?

I can only wish I had the time, money and space for a marine aquarium.
plthijinx • Jun 20, 2005 12:52 am
i don't really have a name for it. maybe "nemo's hutch"? marine isn't so hard. the worst part is buying all of the filtration. i have a 41 gal. with a UV sterilizer, a canister filter, protein skimmer, 2 circ. pumps dual head lighting of which one bulb is actinic and the other a 10,000 kelvin high-intensity daylight lamp. lessee, what else....yeah, that's it. the canister filter however is oversized for the tank which makes the cleanings a little less frequent. the hard part about them is getting them setup and getting the bacteria down right. i lost soooo many fish because the water wasn't "setup" yet. granted my tank used to look great. but i've neglected it over the last 3 years b/c of either depression or money for upkeep or both. anyway, i'll post some pics from when it was in it's "prime"

My parent's fish. Some of them are now gone; a heron (or some such wading bird) came by to visit the sushi bar. :headshake

Really? Maybe you can settle a long-time debate between me and my husband. One of us thinks Steve quit the show because he was super-rich and was just ready to move on. The other thinks he quit the show because he had a mild nervous breakdown of some sort, having to do a kids' show day in and day out.

I don't have the details on that particular incident, but if I see her I can ask. I do know that she always makes a point of praising his Law and Order appearance (remember the retarded kid who freaks out in the holding cell and then dies in Chris Noth's arms? That was Steve) and never, ever mentioning "that show".
plthijinx • Jun 20, 2005 7:21 pm
here's what the tank used to look like when i had the time & money.....
plthijinx • Jun 20, 2005 7:23 pm
blue tang - dory
flame angel - coolness
plthijinx • Jun 20, 2005 7:24 pm
pepe the shrimp and finally duster the feather duster......
plthijinx • Jun 20, 2005 7:26 pm
in the first overall shot, you can see my yellow tang, and next to her, powder blue tang, then foxy the foxface and an old anenomie and nemo and his partner.....one of these days i'll get it back into shape......
BigV • Jun 21, 2005 1:28 pm
Well, Els, you've got some nice fish there. I'll share too.

Meet Igor. Igor and Beegor.

Igor and Beegor are Violet Gobies, sometimes called Dragonfish. They're about a foot long and about an inch in diameter.
xoxoxoBruce • Jun 21, 2005 2:00 pm
I can't tell Igor and Beegor apart. :headshake
BigV • Jun 21, 2005 5:54 pm
Igor and Beegor again. Raaaar! Skeeredya, din't he. hehehehe. What a ham!
mrnoodle • Jun 21, 2005 5:59 pm
Dang. I had finally gotten the idea out of my head to get a fish tank. Now I want one again. Fish = l33t

I heard a rumor that Steve was busted for pot and that's why he's no longer on "that show". You know how rumors are.
BigV • Jun 21, 2005 6:08 pm
Igor, cruising...
Elspode • Jun 22, 2005 11:51 pm
These are some 'tres cool fishes, BV. Salt water, I assume? They look rather eelish, or perhaps like a freshwater snakehead gone very large.
BigV • Jun 23, 2005 12:00 am
hahaha... No, freshwater only. I don't have nearly the chops for marine setup. These guys are not that big, about as big around as my thumb, and maybe a foot long. And escape artists. They like the corners and they like to be vertical. Better have the lid on tight. Dumb too cause the cats are just *wettin* themselves in anticipation of a successful jailbreak.
Elspode • Jun 23, 2005 12:10 am
My cats thought they wanted a piece of the Oscars, too...until the orange one came out of the tank and gave 'em a shot. I had to pick him up and put him back in the tank while the cats sat at a safe distance going, "Um...not today...ees too dangerous...maybe next week..."

I tried gobi's twice, saltwater, and at 20 bucks a pop and neither of them lasting 24 hours, i gave up. they jumped clean out and landed on the floor in the middle of the night. squirmy little bastards! after the first one i closed up as much of the top as possible only to have the second go-around-gobi make it out and onto the floor. little bastards.
Trilby • Jun 23, 2005 3:26 pm
I don't mean to bag on BigV's fish but...they look like monsters. I don't go in the water. Monster's live in the water. They might eat you.
BigV • Jun 23, 2005 4:15 pm
For me that was the appeal. They look positively monstrous. Hehe, but they're sweet and shy, practically blind, did you see those tiny eyes?
Trilby • Jun 23, 2005 4:48 pm
Riiiiiight. Sweet and shy. I wasn't born yesterday, BigV. I know flesh-eating monsters when I see them--"tiny eyes" or not! :eyeball: :eyeball:
wolf • Jun 24, 2005 7:36 pm
So it's a common behavioral trait for these gobi things to not realize they haven't evolved sufficiently to breath air, but they keep trying to escape.

I see.

Maybe your problem is really that they need their own remote for the TV, that way the won't be trying to get out of the tank.
