Mars will be at it's closest point to Earth. and it should look pretty cool.

I'm worried, though.

We're pretty close to Grover's Mill.

Um, not to be too much of a downer, but are those charts not from August 2003?

I remember this happening because I wrote a stupid story for Bucks County about how telescope sales were through the roof that week. A guy at a local optics shop said all sorts of models - low-, mid-, high-end - were flying off the shelves.

And then the Philly Inquirer stole my idea and wrapped it into their own story the next day. Suckers!

So, in any case, what will be the next space event?

Why, the release of the Spielberg-helmed remake of War of the Worlds is next...

It appears that the next opposition of Mars will be in November of this year.

That's what I get for reading an unlinked article on another site, knowing I am looking for mars, close, August as keywords, and only skimming the cool looking article that I do post.

What the Mars Section of the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers (ALPO) are asking you to do – sketch and take images of Mars from your backyard - may seem old-fashioned and unscientific compared to the accomplishments of the space missions to Mars.

I think it's funny that the group is called ALPO. Scientists are tracking planets like a bunch of dogs chasing their tails.
