lumberjim • May 14, 2005 1:32 pm
getting ready to have a barn built in our backyard. got an idea of what we want. anyone ever done this? advice? referrals? pictures of your barn?

thanks
wolf • May 14, 2005 2:47 pm
Jinx won't yet you keep the sheep in the house any more?
lookout123 • May 14, 2005 3:27 pm
kids a little rambunctious?
Dagney • May 14, 2005 4:08 pm
You could call the Amish....

hrmm.....well, the mere idea of that is problematic in itself.
Clodfobble • May 14, 2005 5:53 pm
Maybe Lumberjim's got a really loud voice...
Griff • May 14, 2005 7:03 pm
I've noticed money talks quite loudly among the plain people. They do darn good work though. You doing stick built or timber frame?
jinx • May 15, 2005 9:47 am
Something like this. Actually, exactly like that, just for less money.
xoxoxoBruce • May 15, 2005 10:29 am
So what's the problem? You have the pictures.
Drag home some boards, 2x4s, posts and Lam-beams. Nail them together until they look like the pictures. ;)

Feels like I'm leaving something out........Oh yeah, there's the part where Jinx, wearing her sexiest outfit, has a chat with the local officials about little matters like permits and inspections.
Don't forget site preparation...footings?...slab?..water?...power?...access?

Wait a minute.....uh huh.....uh huh....spell it....uh huh.....thanks.
OK, I called a buddy in Blue Ball, he said Better Built is a good outfit but to check the local Penny Saver and shopping papers for any number of Mennonite carpenters/builders. They'll do a good job and you won't get pregnant.

It's not like LJ and Jinx are that far from the Amish, though...they could just sit on the side of Route 30 and when a buggy passes by, go, "Hey! You! Build me a barn, bitch!" And if the Amish refused, then they could steal a wheel off the buggy and drive away. What are the Amish gonna do? Run after 'em?

personally, i'd love to build it myself. jinx, however will not entertain that. she's all 'realistic' about it. it would take me 3 months of wednesdays and sundays, and it would probably be crooked when i got done.

the foundation/floor is actually one of the things i have questions about. post or slab? permits wont be a problem in elverson. the borough manager is thrilled to be consulted at all, so he should be amenable.
Undertoad • May 15, 2005 2:44 pm
If you use a concrete slab with channels in it, you can just hose down the floor to muck out the cows.
xoxoxoBruce • May 15, 2005 2:48 pm
Make that sheep.
elSicomoro • May 15, 2005 3:27 pm
Or alpacas.
Murphonian Logic • May 16, 2005 1:30 am
You get a pro to pour the foundation (and do the initial block work, if you're into that). After that, we could sooo build a freaking barn. I've been looking for an excuse to buy a nail gun anyway...
LabRat • May 16, 2005 9:39 am
Neat. What's it for?
Elspode • May 16, 2005 1:14 pm
Storage for unused kayaks?

You just hush up mister. :headshake

spode wrote:

Among other things, yes. Also workshop space for LJ's collection of only slightly used power tools (our small, low ceiling'd basement has hindered his woodworking greatness), loft space for the kids to play in and fuck all up instead of the living room, etc. etc...
We'll be kayaking the Moose River and the Fulton Chain of Lakes for a week next month. I can't wait!
Sun_Sparkz • Jun 2, 2005 12:37 am
i have a few barns at home. i'll get some pics.

we store 2years worth of grain in one, Ploughing equiptment in the other.. Ours are all iron and metal tho.. none of this fancy wooden barn crap!!;)

The pic you showed looks awesome though! its huge!
Sun_Sparkz • Jun 2, 2005 12:39 am
oh and we normal people call them sheds..
wolf • Jun 2, 2005 1:38 am
In America a shed is a very small outbuilding that's not quite large enough to keep your lawnmower and weedwhacker in.

Good luck with that. In my experience, the kids will mess up the play room AND the living room
and the kitchen, and the dining room...

Built this myself, no plans, one minor injury, one summer, windows in clerestory not done yet.
Undertoad • Jun 2, 2005 1:28 pm
That's great work by you blue. And welcome back!
Elspode • Jun 2, 2005 4:41 pm
Obviously, this shot was taken *after* you removed the 16d nail?
lumberjim • Jun 2, 2005 5:18 pm
blue!!!!!!

you prick! welcome back....i hope!
kerosene • Jun 2, 2005 5:23 pm
i built this barn. I don't think it will withstand as much as yours.
Elspode • Jun 2, 2005 11:57 pm
Very nice work, Case. New studio is paying benefits already, I see...

Yes, the new studio is perfect...complete with a console record player and growing green things. Now, all I need is some more Nag Champa.

Sorry...didn't mean to hijack the thread. Just was so excited about finishing that painting yesterday.
jinx • Jun 3, 2005 9:46 am
Blue! :jig:
Great job, mad skillz etc... But we've already determined that LJ is not going to build ours himself, just the porch/deck thinger (to replace our scary back steps).

Are you gonna stay a bit this time?
blue • Jun 3, 2005 12:06 pm
Thanks guys, I'll drop in from time to time at the least.

I wan't to try something bigger and better, running out of land tho....would love to try a round barn.

Good call on not letting LJ attempt it Jinx, you're to young to be a widow.

Actually it was from the edge of the roll up door 'spode, and I finished attaching the piece before letting go. It was awesome, had time to grab the camera before it really started gooshing out.

Yes, and it's also invariably covered in cobwebs. Even if you just built it, it will be knee-deep in wolf spiders in two hours.

Since case is an artist, I found this photo of painting a friend of mine did of a barn & donated to camp bluebird for cancer surviors, which she's one. She's been a welder at ship yard on gulf coast for close to 30 yrs. She also did one of a house boat that's good. If anyone is interested.
kerosene • Jun 3, 2005 10:51 pm
wow, that looks neat, buster. My admire your friend for her vision and tenacity.
LCanal • Jun 3, 2005 11:19 pm
Wolf has a point there.

LJ are you building a barn to house livestock or a shed for storing equipment? Must be a zillion plans available.

shed1

• noun 1 a simple roofed structure, typically of wood and used for storage or to shelter animals. 2 a larger structure, typically with one or more sides open, for storing vehicles or machinery.

barn

• noun a large farm building used for storage or for housing livestock.

Sorry to be pedantic but yoos guys are usually somewhat cavalier about language.
To Paraphrase " "The Only Thing Necessary For Bad English To Triumph Is For Good Men To Do Nothing. ...

I would not be that difficult to do the wall framing yourself. Just a tape, a cut off saw and a hammer. If you were Ok with a truss roof you could either fabricate them on the ground using those special steel plate thingies or get them made for you. Probably just as cheap to get them made by the time you factor in the material cost and your labour. If you have enough "mates" locally it would be fun to have an old fashion barn raising to help you erect the walls and instal the trusses. Roofing maybe better left to tradesmen unless you have done it before, same goes for hanging the doors, installing windows.

Us guys should not underestimate the "I built it myself" feeling.
wolf • Jun 4, 2005 2:14 am
I believe that the livestock LJ is intending to house are his two young children ... in the loft area, and probably conventional storage on the lower floor.

This way he doesn't have to build a playhouse and a shed.

Also, once the kids outgrow the loft playroom, it can easily be converted into Daddy's Playroom.
lumberjim • Jun 4, 2005 8:54 am
no livestock. just storage, lawn/garden stuff, and a workshop.
Murphonian Logic • Jun 10, 2005 1:26 am
(Huffy) If you don't include a spankatorioum, I'm out on helping to build it.
Unless there's free beer.
Mmmmm...beeeer.
