I'm going to be a dad for the first time. My wife is due at the end of June, and it's a little girl. If anyone would like to buy us a gift, she's registered at Guitar Center and apple.com

Congratulations!! Joe Bob Briggs once wrote fabulously (and IMO accurately) on the psychological changes of impending parenthood in Iron Joe Bob. Regrettably, my copy has been missing for some time or I'd quote it for you.

smoothmoniker • Apr 19, 2005 11:28 am

I love Sophia, its a strong classic name, and the meaning (wisdom) is important for us.

Sophia Moog Moniker

Unsolicited advice? Hell, I predict you won't make it to July before somebody starts suggesting that "she really needs a little brother or sister."
dar512 • Apr 19, 2005 1:02 pm
Congrats to you and Mrs. Moniker. It's the most work you're ever gonna love.

Another reason to have them close together is that you and Mrs. Moniker get them "growed up" and out of the palace while you're still young enough to enjoy yourselves. Or you could do the classic Catholic family and crank out one every 18 months for the next couple decades.
Clodfobble • Apr 20, 2005 8:50 pm
If they're less than a year apart, the proper terminology is "Irish twins."

Sophia Grace Lee

Born at 7:55 last night, on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood
6 lbs, 2 oz
18 inches long

We had to have a C section after about 8 hrs of labor, but both mom and baby are doing well. She is so beautiful. I know all parents say that, but you guys won't believe these pictures. She's amazing.

I'm bootlegging the hospital ISP right now, so I don't have the bandwidth, but I'll post them when I get home on Sunday.

Yay for Sophia, job well done for mama, and time to roll up your sleeves, dad.

Congratulations to all of you!!!
wolf • Jun 24, 2005 7:03 pm
Awesome!! Congratulations to all of you!

Until you mentioned the c-section, when you said the birth occured on Sunset Blvd I was kind of envisioning something involving a taxicab, a frightened taxi driver in a turban worrying about his upholstery, and a crackwhore saying kindly, "Don't worry about nothin' honey, I had eight babies so I know what to do ... you just push now!"
smoothmoniker • Jun 24, 2005 8:24 pm
After the C Section, the docs said that they restapled the ab muscles tighter than before, and suctioned some of the fat from that area ... they said that it was part of the standard package in any hospital in Hollywood.

The last comment about the hospital's "standard package" is hilarious. It nearly had me in...

Congrats. It's the best and the worst job you'll ever have!! This coming from a two-time daddy. Well, not two time, like..."oh, you two timing.." but like second hand dad...no wait! Second round dad, ack! Second-time dad...that sounds lame. Rats! Never mind.

Congrats on the new addition.
Silent • Jun 27, 2005 2:40 pm

Has the wow factor wore off at all yet?

UN-possible! However, crying in the middle of the night (again) and stinky diapers can temporarily attenuate it. Good going to all of the smooth clan, and I wish you all well!
smoothmoniker • Jun 27, 2005 5:12 pm
She eats every two hours. It takes me 5 minutes to get her up, changed, swaddled, and ready to eat. It takes her 30-45 minutes to eat. It takes me 20-30 minutes to get her burped and back down. It takes me 10 minutes to fall back asleep. So the math goes something like this:

0:00 Crying
0:05 Swaddled and eating
0:50 Done eating, burping and settling
1:20 Sophia to sleep
1:30 Dad to sleep

Thirty blessed, glorious, wondrous minutes of sleep before ...

2:00 Crying

She was born slightly underweight, and lost about 7 oz in the first 24 hours of being alive, so they told us to feed her every 2 hours, or as often as she'll eat, for at least the first week. Hopefully, once she's back up to her fighting weight, we'll be able to space that out a bit more.

But until then, pass the coffee.

They told us to do the same thing with our firstborn. (They all lose weight the first day or two.) I remember it really made me anxious, that we needed to be forcing her to eat. Like she would die or something. They even told us to try to keep her from falling asleep when she was eating, to make sure she ate enough. I was a nervous daddy. Turns out, she ate when she was hungry, and stopped when she was full. And gained the weight back just fine. She actually really took off. Grew like a champ. Nothing to worry about after all.
BigV • Jun 27, 2005 5:34 pm
[whispers]Way to go, Dad. *quiet applause*

smoothmoniker • Jul 23, 2005 1:26 am
No time to update, busy changing diapers and rocking Sophia to sleep. Although she does have her own website now, at sophialee.com
Brett's Honey • Jul 23, 2005 12:39 pm
I understand. I'll check out the website!
Elspode • Jul 26, 2005 1:43 pm

Belated congrats, SM, and best to Sophia and Mrs. Moniker.
