Cellar field of 64

Undertoad • Feb 6, 2005 1:26 pm
http://cellar.org/fieldof64/blank64.php

General idea: a "tournament" of "stuff"

Concept: we nominate 64 "teams" in a category. Then they are entered into the brackets, according to someone's seeding (we can refine that later). Each "game" is played as one of us deciding the winner, possibly listing a reason. The championship goes up to a vote of some sort.

Example: say the category is "breakfast cereals". We nominate them until we have 64. We seed them into the brackets. The top seeds are Cheerios, Raisin Bran, Corn Flakes, and in a seeding oddity, Capn Crunch. Cheerios, as a first seed, goes up against Kellogg's All-Bran as a 16th seed.

Then there is a first round of games. Either you go and visit the page, and your selection is made, or someone "operates" the game as a thread, and posts "Cheerios versus Kellogg's All Bran." Beestie, the next to visit the thread, posts "Cheerios" and then a single line of why: "The basic O, goes with anything. In fact I'm giving my O-face right now." Then I return and post "Frosted Flakes (2) vs Cookie Crisp (15)" and Russotto comes in and posts "Cookie Crisp" and "I don't eat either of them, but I'd rather have cookies than flakes."

The brackets are updated, then there is a second round and so forth.

I was thinking it would work better automated, but maybe someone has a better idea? Does any of this make sense?

I'd like to see a Cellar awards. "Funniest", "Most Obnoxious", "Most Inflammatory", "Smartest", "Most Sensual", "Craziest", "Most Longwinded", etc.

We can call it "The Toadies".
lookout123 • Feb 6, 2005 2:35 pm
soundsinteresting. i like rich's ideas for contests.
Elspode • Feb 7, 2005 1:01 pm
The local newspaper did something very similar awhile back. They did it with movies, books and recordings. It was kind of fun.
Undertoad • Feb 7, 2005 2:53 pm
Let's try it then. This is going to be a little US-centric, but anyway... nominate breakfast cereals.

Cheerios
Frosted Flakes
Kellogg's All-Bran
Capn Crunch
Corn Flakes
Cookie Crisp
Raisin Bran
Raisin Nut Bran
Grape-Nuts
lookout123 • Feb 7, 2005 3:17 pm
do honey nut cheerios fall under the Cheerios umbrella?
and honeycombs
SteveDallas • Feb 7, 2005 3:19 pm
The old Steve & Mike Show on WIP used to do this.. was always entertaining on a slow day.

I would have to nominate Cap'n Crunch Crunchberries (definitely not the same as the plain Cap'n Crunch).

Also Frosted Mini-Wheats, Rice Krispies, and Fruity Pebbles.

(I would move that any cereal containing marshmallow bits should be put to the torch rather than nominated, but I'm sure somebody will stand up to defend them.)
perth • Feb 7, 2005 3:50 pm
Cinnamon Toast Crunch
Marshmallow Mateys (Generic brand, at least twice as many marshmallows as Lucky Charms)
elf • Feb 7, 2005 4:09 pm
mmmmmm, dehydrated marshmallows. I used to eat up all the crunchy (boring) bits of cereal just as fast as I could, so that I could eat all the marshmallows at once. If I was juuuust gluttonous enough, they would still be a little Styrofoam-esque by then. :D

I'm gonna nominate Corn Pops and Fruity Pebbles since they're the only gluten-free ones I can ever find that don't cost astronomical amounts of money for a smaller-than-standard-sized box, and therefore are always in my house.
Trilby • Feb 7, 2005 4:24 pm
Grapenuts
Quisp
Banana Nut Crunch
Katkeeper • Feb 7, 2005 4:45 pm
Oatmeal, preferably slow cooked and made with steel cut oats. The Best!

SD, where do you think I got the ide--- I mean, I simply had no idea! :)
mrnoodle • Feb 7, 2005 5:19 pm
Reese's Puffs (they taste better than you think they might)
Quaker 100% Natural

there also used to be this stuff called Almond Delight that I can't find anymore, but was dern good.

I would also like to nominate Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs. They're "crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside, and they don't have a single natural ingredient or essential vitamin to get in the way of that rich, fudgy taste." I miss C&H.

Count Chocula
Sugar Pops (although I think they call them "Corn Pops" now to make them seem healthier)
Fruit Loops
Sugar Smacks (another renamed cereal, I believe. What are they now? Honey Smacks? Golden Smacks? Puffed Wheat coated in carmelized sugar)
Cocoa Puffs
Total
Wheaties. Oh how could we forget the joy of Wheaties!

Oh, for the days where you bought the cereal for the toy inside rather than the fiber content! I just got BOTH. Big boxes of Cheerios have Shark Tales video games in 'em!!!!!!! Don't have to save no boxtops. Good prizes in cereal and in Cracker Jacks are another reason to hate liability attorneys.

Honey nut cornflakes.

LabRat • Feb 9, 2005 11:42 am
Checked my cabinet last night, found a Honey Nut Chex i forgot to mention. Also excellent for snacking right out of the box. I've just seen Oh's in a regular size box, if that's what you meant SD. They are slightly bigger than a cheerio, and the hole is filled with some of crunchy stuff. Sweet grahamy type taste. I think there are a few flavors, but the original is my fav. We need to discuss cereals in the food thread...
Clodfobble • Feb 9, 2005 1:31 pm
How many are we up to, UT? Surely we must be close to 64 by now...

I will be most interested to see how this turns out - whether candy cereals (Fruit Loops, etc.) beat out healthy fiber-rich, whole grain varieties (Wheatena, Ralston, Oatmeal, etc.) I see Wheatena and Fruit Loops as a match. Anyone interested in suggesting odds?

Undertoad • Feb 10, 2005 9:51 am
Ok, it's fixed. I didn't have it set up properly... the first seed is supposed to meet the second seed at the end of the bracket, not the second round...

Next game is Cinnamon Toast Crunch vs Cap'n Crunch Peanut Butter.

Corn Chex v. Rice Chex

The Corn Chex are definitely scrappers, hold their milk well and have been training hard all season. Both contenders have shown their versatility by taking part in the Chex Mix in interleague play and well display their ability to stand up to Worcestershire Sauce. But how much of this is actually due to the critical addition of the Wheat Chex??

Ahhhh ... the tension is just too high! The decision must be made!!

The biggest upset was upstart Honey Nut Cornflakes (14) beating Kix (3). Kix was mentioned more than once during the nominations, and seemed to have a spirit behind it, but you never know what the field of 64 will expose. Sometimes there are weaknesses in the highly ranked teams.

I was pleased to see my personal underdog fav, Raisin Nut Bran (12), make it to the second round. It's underrated! But we all have our favorites. On to the second round then.

While I'm thinking of it ... we should probably figure out how we're going to deal with the crucial semi final and final rounds here ... So much is at stake for all of these fine cereals that have worked and trained so hard all season ...

Not terribly well thought out proposal: Should the semis and finals be determined not by a single call of winner in the matchup, but through the means of a vote by PM? That way some of the dramatic tension of the real end of march madness will be sustained.

Voting should, though, include more than just a call for a particular cereal ... votes should come with justification. The ref (UT) makes the final determination as to whether an additional vote goes to a team for originality or humor or whatever ... the winner, as we all know, is not always the top seed. There are some amazing upsets that occur in sports.

To account for schedules and time zones, voting should remain open for at least 24 hrs ... do the semis one day, and the finals the next.
Undertoad • Feb 11, 2005 2:31 pm
Oh, additional vote for originality, that is a heavy burden of responsibility. Maybe the automation should include a "sponsor" who runs the tournament and makes that decision.

You have to be the first one to answer when UT asks which of two should win. Just watch this thread.

You reap what you sow! I was devastated to see my beloved Crispix knocked out in the first round. I already fired the coach.

And my oatmeal, which was gaining a following was up against the heavily favored Cheerios.

(what can I say? I dislike both equally.)

Raisin Bran.

I've decided to make it my new favorite, and have "spoken" to the ref.

Alpha-Bits

Pretty much anything is cooler that flavored gruel. But I really do love Alpha-Bits.
Beestie • Feb 12, 2005 11:05 pm
Damn, that's a toughie.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Alpha-Bits are faster and, therefore, score higher on the "instant-gratification" scale. Gotta go with Alpha-Bits. Nutritional comparisons are not valid since its all about taste so I conveniently overlook Cream of Wheat's obvious life-extending benefits.

More Alpha-Bits, please!
Undertoad • Feb 12, 2005 11:15 pm

It's the Elite Eight!

Some Cinderella stories here. And a 1-2 matchup worthy of the final. Some think Alpha-Bits is a contender, but I ask you, who have they beaten? The South was a stronger category where even Rice Chex, the 10th seed, seems like it belongs in the Eight.

It's the Final Four!!!!

I didn't get the automation built in time, so let's go with Wolf's Rules of Order here.

Cheerios, or Wheaties?

Apple Jacks, or Frosted Flakes?

Send me a Private Message with your choice for both of these two games. Voting on the semi-final ends at 11:59 PM tonight, 2/14/2005. I'm not going to add an extra vote for good reasons because I can't take the heavy responsibility of adding an additional point. You may argue for your own personal choices in this thread. Good luck... and may the best cereal win.
Katkeeper • Feb 14, 2005 10:02 am
Wheaties!!
SteveDallas • Feb 14, 2005 10:56 am
As befits the Final Four, we have some very strong contenders and two tough choices. This one will require some thought.
glatt • Feb 14, 2005 11:41 am
Has anyone had Wheaties lately? I had them this morning. They are delicious! They are good for you. They are all-American. They are an original. Vote for Wheaties. Tell your friends. I won't say anything negative about Cheerios. How could I? But they are no Wheaties.

And in the other game, well, they are both good. But I voted for Tony the Tiger. I have nothing but fond memories for Frosted Flakes, even if they are too sweet for this 37 year old today.
warch • Feb 14, 2005 12:14 pm
Cheerios...Donut seeds...Classic. Happy. Floaty. Os. Tuggin at your oat healthy heart.

Cheerios and Frosted Flakes. Just cuz.

Interesting how the final four came out though. If the two flake-type cereals competed against each other, and the two kibble(?) ones against each other, I'm not sure if my vote would've been the same.

Your semi-final scores are in

North-South game: Cheerios 8 Wheaties 1

East-West game: Frosted Flakes 6 Apple Jacks 2

And now your field of 64 FINAL.

Cheerios, or Frosted Flakes?

Send me a Private Message with your choice. Don't be shy, it's just a little message. Voting on the semi-final ends at 11:59 PM tonight, 2/15/2005. Good luck... and may the best cereal win.

I'm not even going to ask why there were 9 votes for one and 8 for the other.
Undertoad • Feb 15, 2005 12:26 am
And yet you desire the answer.
SteveDallas • Feb 15, 2005 12:19 pm
Nope. I slept well last night without the answer and I will again tonight. Even two or three years ago I would have wanted the answer. I have now come to a place in my life where, really, on almost any question, I'm usually better off not knowing.

What I desire is . . .

well, never mind.
mrnoodle • Feb 15, 2005 12:55 pm
Cheerios v. FFs

TV sitcoms?

actors/tresses

countries of the world

A vote for beverages, continuing with the theme of consumables.

How about animals?
lookout123 • Feb 16, 2005 12:23 pm
i say cities of the world or historical figures.
mrnoodle • Feb 16, 2005 12:53 pm
historical figures. But they should compete based on some arbitrary thing that has nothing to do with what they're known for. Like best hair or something.
Beestie • Feb 16, 2005 12:57 pm
Please: something that won't degenerate into a "my ______ is better than yours" fight. We get an earful of that in the other threads.

The cereal thing was good.

I think (SD's idea of) sitcoms would be an excellent choice - there are so many good ones to nominate.

What television have you been watching??? Sure, maybe a half dozen, but 64??? We could almost run a backwards field of 64 to determine the WORST. (I think I know what my #1 seed is.)
Happy Monkey • Feb 16, 2005 6:22 pm
There may have been 64 in the history of sitcoms, including British ones.

LabRat • Feb 17, 2005 10:12 am
Oh, and instead of sitcoms, maybe stars of sitcoms? Homer, Hawkeye Peirce, Andy, Chrissy etc.

oohoohooh ! i like it! let's go for sitcom stars next. this has to be something that we care enough about to participate, but not to the point that this becomes another argument thread.
Undertoad • Feb 17, 2005 11:38 am
I was kinda hoping for something less culture-bound so the rest of the world could play? Or is that an impossible goal.
lookout123 • Feb 17, 2005 11:46 am
hmmm. don't they have satellites? all that means is that david hasselhoff would take an early lead as our global friends weighed in.

weren't all the cereals US based??
SteveDallas • Feb 17, 2005 12:16 pm
LabRat wrote:

Were you thinking of using different parts of the human body, or comparing the same specific body part as manifested on different people?
LabRat • Feb 17, 2005 12:37 pm
Different parts of 1 body. leg vs. arm; liver vs spleen; eye vs nose etc. End result would be the most 'valuable' body part i guess. Hopefully it wouldn't end up being P vs. V, but with this group... Or, we could compare a specific part of different people. biggest/smallest or best/worst nose, lips, legs etc. Kind of hard to come up with topics that have at least 64 different things that could be compared.

What about snack foods? potato chips vs. doritos; Ho-Ho's vs. Swiss Cake Rolls?
chainsaw • Feb 17, 2005 12:47 pm
I enjoyed this cereal battle a little too much. Next we could do... beers, candy bars, candy in general, countries, animals, constellations, movies, and I do like the sitcom idea, but we could broaden it to all tv shows?
glatt • Feb 17, 2005 2:43 pm
I like the countries idea, but wonder how it would work as we get close to the final. Obviously, the USA would win most votes, since this board is based in PA.

If you couldn't vote for your own country (honor system) the USA would lose, so that wouldn't be fair either.

Sitcom/TV characters would be a good topic.

If we had all types of TV characters, you could end up with Les Nesman v. Andy Taylor.
Undertoad • Feb 17, 2005 8:37 pm
Labrat, there were non-US cereals but they didn't go anywhere... some major brands are identical in other countries... I dunno.
BigV • Feb 17, 2005 9:43 pm
comic book heroes (superman v batman)
comic book villians
Hey, villians in general, historical and/or fictional
movie monsters (alien v predator v the thing) /shivers/
LabRat • Feb 18, 2005 9:52 am
OK, OK, OK, enough dilly dallying around. how about board games???

checkers, chutes and ladders, scrabble, fox and hounds, sorry, parcheesi, monopoly, mah jong (sp?), monopoly, risk, connect four (not tecnically a BOARD game), battleship (nope, not that one either, but still fun as hell), memory (yeah, yeah no board either), chess, backgammon, candyland, (much better)...

OR, just games in gereral. everyone in the world, rich or poor, english speaking or not has some kind of game they can play at a kitchen table. so, is that ok? UT, I guess i just assumed that the few cereals I hadn't heard of were just US ones i had't heard of b/c i don't shop at organic/wholefoods stores. i wasn't trying to be an asshat. :) sorry.
