Tape Creations...
I might as well make a home for my tape creations here.
Here are my former posts on the subject.
One Two Three Four Five Six Seven EightMy latest is a bit more complicated. I added blinky lights.
I got the circuit diagram from
here, blew the dust off of my Electrical Engineering class equipment, and made several trips to Radio Shack. CAT5 cable conveniently has enough wires for a ground, 3 pairs of alternating blinkers, and one always-on light, so I put an ethernet socket in the project enclosure.
Here are the resulting electronics, with the enclosure open and closed.
At the bottom of the second photo above, you can see a Radio Shack Adaptaplug, and an indicator light. The light is green when the plug is attached correctly, red if it's in backwards. Adaptaplug, for some reason, decided not to design it in a way that prevents incorrect attachments.
Anyway, I soldered my LEDs to the other end of the ethernet cable, and wrapped it with tape. Then I started constructing a spiky ball around the end.
And here it is completed, with flash and without.
Oh wow! That is soooo cool! :)
Here's one that's not blinky, but it is lit, and is on a cool marble pillar.
Oh wow! That is soooo cool! :)
Thanks!
Excellent, HM. Good photography too.
The indicator light changes color with polarity? Cool.
Thanks!
Radio Shack helped a bit by selling an LED that changes color with polarity.
And, as it seems to be a question that cropped up every so often in the Art Gallery, here's how I color them:
OK, how did you get a streak of color on the outside of the pen barrel? Second marker of the same color?
It's on a strip of tape that I colored and then stuck on. ;)
I've got a new one with blinky lights that I'm very happy with. I'd like to make an animated GIF out of a short AVI I took with my digital camera. Any advice on good, reputable, shareware/freeware software to do so?
Too cool. It looks like a couple of the ones you gave as gifts were ornaments. This makes me think that, now since you have the technology to light up your sculptures, you need to make a string of christmas lights with these. Blinky ones would be so awesome. You could sell them, and give 10% to charity (aka The Cellar). I'll be the first to put my order in for 3 strings, on the house of course since this was my idea ... :)
I would buy one. :)
BTW, those are really cool.
That's been on my mind (Christmas lights, not selling) for a while. Unfortunately, I'd probably need to start now to get a decent string done by Christmas...
OK, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but my process is a bit too slow for commercial applications. To have the time to make enough to sell, I'd have to quit my job, and if I quit my job, I'd have to charge a couple hundred dollars per piece - and sell a lot of em. Plus, I'd need many more seasons of TV shows on DVD to watch while working.
On a noncommercial note, one thing I want to try now is minimizing the electronics so they fit in a ball, and only the power cables come out, so I can string them together on thin wires instead of having a big ugly box for each ball, attached with a thick, inflexible ethernet cable.
You must get so high coloring those things, no wonder you keep making them.
Speaking of which, here are a few I haven't posted yet. Some of these are from the "gift" set, and others are older. It's several variations on the standard icosohedron.
And here's my newest one. This shows my prototype board and the resulting circuit, and then the circuitboard placed in the project box.
To assist in the accurate aiming of the LEDs, I placed each one on the face of a tape cube, and soldered on the wires of the ethernet cable which had been put through some heatshrink tubing.
I then constructed the tape ball around the cube, as usual.
Here it is in the dark.
And here is a
movie of the blinking.
Here's some interesting shapes you might want to try your hand at, HM.
And here is a movie of the blinking.
That is absolutely beautiful!!
I admire both your patience and ingenuity.
That is absolutely beautiful!!
I admire both your patience and ingenuity.
:thankyou: Though I do sometimes wonder if it's patience or OCD...
What I always say to folks about mental illness ... it's not usually a problem unless it's keeping you from doing other stuff that you want to or need to.
I'm probably OK then...
:rollanim:
I'm not sure
which thread to put this in so, as I'm now using
flickr, I'll go ahead and put it in both!
My dad just finished making me a cool box to store my markers and tape in. Here it is, closed, empty, and full:

That is SO awesome! What a great dad!
I really like the design. He did a great job.
:thankyou:
Yeah, it's pretty cool. He's been making boxes for everyone in the family, and I adapted his design for the stuff I was going to put in it.
I must say, and I never say this to a guy, nice box.
Design, wood and craftsmanship are all first rate.
I must say, and I never say this to a guy, nice box.
Hmmm
Thanks...?
Seriously, xoB, are you implying that you have said that to a gal?
"Hey, baby, nice box!"
Here's some interesting shapes you might want to try your hand at, HM.
Ask and ye shall receive:

It's the Buckyball, very cool indeed, HM! Nice work! :thumb:

Absolutely. But be forewarned, if you don't have her clothes off before you say it, you won't get them off. :headshake
Happy Monkey - Amazing, as usual. I love the color/texture.
I can't do anything other than gape in awe.
Wow.
I'm making another of the 700-triangle models. I've got a quick how-to posted.

Is this to go along with the fall season of crap TV?
When you fold each first triangle in a strip, do you just approximate the correct angle by eye? Or measure it somehow? It looks like the rest of the triangle folds in a strip just follow along after that first angle is established.
How do you do the alternating colors? Do you color each adjacent one individually, or do you set up some sort of "mass production" coloring like the blue and yellow coloring at the top of the image?
Umm... I just noticed you can click on the picture for the tutorial on flickr. Nevermind.
I haven't been working as hard as I could, but here's where I am so far. All 700 triangles are there. All that needs to be done is the final five joints, a few final wrappings, and a final coat of marker.
(As glatt mentions, click
the picture for the tutorial/larger image. On that page, click "
ALL SIZES" for larger versions.)

You have outdone yourself.

Whoa Dude! Five joints and you'll never finish that sucker. :rasta:
I knew there was a reason it's taken me two months to get from the last picture to this one...
It was finished a while ago, but I just got around to putting it on Flickr.
Every Christmas I make a few more ornaments for the tree. I made six this year; here are three. The others are hard to photograph, I'll try again later.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/happymonkey/77841374/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/9/77841374_274babfe1d.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Gold" /></a>

Beautiful! I'm having trouble with the scale, how big are those last three? :mg:
The distance from one point on a triangle to the center of the opposite side is the width of the tape I used. For the last three, I used 3/4 inch tape, and for the big one I used 1/2 inch tape. So the little ones are about an inch and a half.
Nothing complicated. I just found some goofy materials...
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/happymonkey/122306851/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/38/122306851_e5519f81ec.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Geometry Circus" /></a>
Jeez, the black and white one is great camo, it really confuses the shape. You should submit that to the Pentagon. :D
Dear Pentagon:
You know all that cash you spend on camo? You should just go to the "Tape for Teenage Girls" section of Office Depot!
HTH, HAND
A Patriot.
Still think these are cool. New additions are neat variations. The zebra one is kind of an optical illusion. OOoooh, make a zebra shaped one with the zebra tape!!! I tried to do this a long time ago, but got too frustrated. So, I'll just enjoy yours. Any new ones on the tree this year?
Scroll up. ;)
Hrm. I never got around to putting up pictures of the other three, and now it's too late; they're in my parents' attic. Maybe next year. They're not all that great anyway - just plain icosahedrons like the circus ones, but filled with snarls of metallic thread. I was hoping for interesting reflections and such, and it kinda worked, but not really.
:smack: I did, and noted 2005 in the post date...thinking that was last Christmas, so of course wanted to know about this year, being 2006. What a dope.
And I work with neurotoxins. Scary.
:mg: Those cubes and ornaments are great! I didn't expect to see such wonderfulness. :)
I just started writing poetry again but I am not ready to show it off yet.
I must work on displaying some of the other art/craft I dabble into.
Let's see. hummm
Thanks! Please do post any art you do.
It's Christmas time again, so I made my annual ornaments.
First, I got these snazzy new one-handed trigger-activated tape dispensers. Very cool. Figure out how many clicks you need for a certain piece, pull the tab, and you've got it!
Once I've made the ornaments, I make a pretty box for them.
It's got cozy little compartments for each ornament.
Here's the full view.
And the ornaments are ready to explore their new world...
Each ornament is an icosahedron (twenty equilateral triangle faces) with a pyramid on each face. There are two lengths of pyramid, and I put them together in different patterns on each ornament.
(You can click each picture for the flickr page.)
HM, you have outdone yourself once again.
They are lovely. They also give me a throbbing headache, when I consider the work involved. Good Work HM!
And the ornaments are ready to explore their new world...
 you are such a geek. (That's a compliment.)
Excellent, as usual. :thumb: No lights in these, I assume.
Thanks, all!
No, no lights. I need to figure out a good compact way to do it; the huge electronics control boxes were cool for experimentation, but they are really ungainly, and CAT5 cable is pretty unwieldy sticking out of one...
Nothing short of amazing, HM. Very impressive.
Very cool HM.
how about LED lights? You could incorporate a tiny wire into them and have that be the hanging wire. A transformer at the base of the tree would supply 12v DC to the entire tree (running wires up branches or using a conductive fake tree) the ornaments would be powered when they hung on the branches.
I have occasionally flirted with the idea of making a string of them, but haven't summoned up the courage to start. CVS recently came out with LED Chritmas lights, where the LED is shaped in such a way that it shines in all directions, and a transformer is supplied somehow (the package is much smaller than any transformer I've seen before). Perhaps at some point I'll cannibalize one of those strings and make my own.
Here's a new metal tape ball:
The "rivet" effect is from some snagging that happens in my
cutter. It's sorta interesting.
Is that metal duct tape?
It's cool looking.
Silver? Stiff? Too bad that rivet effect isn't on all edges, it looks really cool.
Is that metal duct tape?
It's cool looking.
Yeah, it's duct tape that you could actually use on ducts... I was quite pleased to find it.
Silver? Stiff? Too bad that rivet effect isn't on all edges, it looks really cool.
Yeah. I may try seeing how much I can manage. Maybe cut the tape into three strips, so both sides have it. No easy way to get it on the edges the tape actually crosses, though.
A bigger metal model:

Anaglyph! (Red Left Blue Right)
A
larger size from the flickr page may work better.

It's amazing how different those stars look monotoned rather than the multi colored ones you've been building. I see patterns now that didn't show up on the others.
I guess with 12" wide tape you could build an emergency shelter, that wouldn't roll easily and had defensive spikes for bears. :tinfoil:
Heh, and some sort of hammock inside, 'cause it's a bit spiky in there, too.
I like 'em. The metal ones are a little softer looking.
Interesting... they're actually much harder and sharper, of course...
I wonder whether the lighting (outdoor for the spiky one) is part of that effect.
I think the tape ones look "crisper" like they take an edge well where you fold them, and then the panel part remains pretty flat. You see a bunch of individual triangles that together form a tape creation.
The metal seems more malleable or fluid and doesn't seem as flat in the panel part. Like it makes a crisp fold at the pointy edges, but then bends slightly between folds. It gives it a softer, more fluid feel.
This cropped picture from flicker shows an area that looks like a star shaped bowl to me rather than a group of individual triangles. Maybe it's the lighting. Maybe it's the metal that will bend into a shape and then retain that shape, instead of bouncing back like plastic. Either way, I like it.
Maybe it's the metal that will bend into a shape and then retain that shape, instead of bouncing back like plastic. Either way, I like it.
Yeah, me too. And I think that's it. When pressing the outer layer in place, it somewhat smooths the edges, and the foil holds the shape. The cup shape is indeed much more obvious on this one. Though, as Bruce mentioned, it may also be in part due to the monochromicity.
A small one, but it's a new shape.

Damn, this is frikkin' incredible stuff! I've heard references to your tape creations, HM, but I hadn't made it down to see any until just now. I'm astounded by your creativity and determination (to make so many triangles). I also know what your profile pic is all about, now. Bravo!
I like those. It's cool how the smaller ornament is nestled inside the larger one. I've seen glass ornaments with a similar style.
Thanks! I've done a few other nestled ornaments, but the reflective property of the foil tape adds something. Unfortunately, the opaque property means that the light is seldom as nice as a camera flash.
Whoa, those are neat. Are they a lot harder to do than the earlier ones?
Foil is harder, in that mistakes show much more obviously. This particular foil is still harder, in that, as actual duct repair tape, the glue is extremely strong, making mistakes much easier to make.
The shapes are no more complicated than anything I've done before, but the material's a challenge.
And I must confess that I positioned the pieces so as to not completely display how well I met that challenge.
HM, you need a hobby.
No, wait... you have one... nevermind.
Here are most of the balls I've made over the years. The ones that aren't on the tree or hanging from the chandelier.

Hey Happy Monkey, you've been scarce lately.
Did you happen to see yesterday's Washington Post Express? In the Weekend Pass section, they had a picture of some artworks that looked exactly like your tape craft, but made of paper. Artist Denise Bookwalter is having a show at
Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in Silver Spring. Might be worth a look.
intellectual snowflakish? wtf is that?? lol
Interesting.
It looks like modular origami with patterns for cutout papercraft on each facet. One thing that comes to mind is that origami avoids cutting or gluing, while the patterns on the facets are designed to be cut out and glued together.
I'm not sure I get it, especially it's connection to aircraft (as per her website), but that may be why I consider my stuff craft, rather than art. I find it hard to consider it to have a message of any sort. Or, unfortunately, to grasp (or bring my own) meaning to someone else's.
Oh, yes. I do like them, I just don't think I get them.
HM, yours are WAY cooler.
Are you working on anything now?
Yes, I'm working on this Christmas' batch. Photos after they are presented. ;)
Here are two of the three I made this year. They are both the same shape, but with different color schemes.

You haven't lost your touch... super! :notworthy
One of these days, I'm gonna pick up my kid's math book from school and there - on the cover - will be a full size photo one of HM's Tape Creations.
Outstanding craftsmanship.
HM is way too patient and clever.
Very nice multiple light-sources photograph. Shows off the color scheme nicely.
Thanks, it worked a bit better on the second than the first. I may have to try again when I photograph the third one.
Here's another take on the first one:
And here's the third one. It's similar to the other two in shape, but the concave pentagons are as wide as the convex ones, making hollow areas on each face of the dodecahedron.

A tapecraft wedding present for my sister. It's a
rhombic enneacontahedron with the diamond-shaped faces replaced by pyramids with equilateral triangles for faces:

Very nice! It looks like a bunch of little five point stars linked together.
Thanks! There are 12 5-pointed stars, and where they meet they make 6-pointed stars. Each 5-pointed star has all five colors, and each 6-pointed star has three.
So fascinating! Beautiful work, there, HM.
Awesome. Fascinating. Really really clever.
That would be really awesome on a Christmas tree. Especially if you could figure out how to light it up from the inside.
Thanks!
I've done a few
lit ones, but not recently.
Damn, that one's complex, I can't even get my head around how that goes together. :rollanim:
Happy Monkey,
I just saw that 3M is doing a contest for Scotch tape sculptures. Dude, this has
you written all over it. You
have to enter. Then we can all go there and vote for you. $5000 grand prize, and a case of tape.
http://www.offtherollcontest.com/main/home.aspx
part of the rules:
# Entrant must demonstrate that the sculpture subject of the Entry was created using Scotch® Premium Performance Packaging Tape #3850 or, alternatively, Scotch® High Performance Packaging Tape #3500/3501. The amount of Scotch® Packaging Tape used to create the sculpture must be 90% or higher;
# Up to 10% of the Sculpture/Entry may include other materials to support or enhance the sculpture and is limited to wire, cardboard, paint, lighting, wood, fabric and plastic. It may not include words or other objects;
sounds a tad more heavy duty than HMs genre..... but it would be cool to say 'we knew him when'....
He would have to scale up. I don't know if the bigger tape works the same.
He could make one of his creation about 10 feet in diameter. Cool.
I'm picturing a rhombic enneacontahedron 45 feet high... and a stiff breeze.
It would put the "DUCK!!", in duck-tape*.
*Yes I know it's duct-tape, not duck-tape, although there is a Duck brand of duct-tape, which would make it Duck-tape, but it's shitty duct-tape and not allowed by the rules of this contest.
Dude, HM. We would all go vote for you! Make a large-scale one, say a foot in diameter or so.

Look it up.....it actually began as Duck Tape.
edit....i
looked it up for you:
Etymology
The origin of the term "duct tape" is the subject of some disagreement.
One view[17] is that it was called "duck tape" by WWII soldiers either because it resembled strips of cotton duck or because the waterproof quality of the tape contributed to the name, by analogy to the water-shedding quality of a duck's plumage. Under this view, soldiers returning home from the war found uses for duck tape around the house, where tents were forgotten and ductwork needed sealing, not ammunition cases. Other proponents of this view point to older references to non-adhesive cotton duck tape used in Venetian blinds, suggesting that the name was carried over to the adhesive product. The Oxford English Dictionary says that perhaps "duct tape" was originally "duck tape". This view is summarized most notably in a New York Times article by etymologist William Safire in March 2003. Safire cites use of the term "cotton duck tape" in a 1945 advertisement for surplus government property.[18] The Oxford English Dictionary gives a 1902 quotation for "100,000 yards of cotton duck tape" being used to protect the cables of the Brooklyn Bridge.[19] Thus a fabric duck tape was available to which an adhesive could have been added.
I ain't buying that. :headshake
The other view is that "duct tape" is the original term, since there are many documented uses of that term which pre-date all documented uses of the term "duck tape" for the adhesive-backed product, and that there is no written evidence supporting the WWII story.[20] Some proponents of this view accept the idea that there was an earlier non-adhesive "duck tape", but claim that people have just confused the similar pronunciation of two similar but unrelated products through the process of elision, and that the rest of the "duck" etymology is folklore or fabrication. This view was summarized most notably in a Boston Globe article by etymologist Jan Freeman, also in March 2003.[21]
In any case, whether it is an error or a preservation of the original usage, the term "duck tape" is sometimes used for the product today.[22] Duck Tape is also a brand name for this product in some countries.
I'm firmly in the Duct camp, although the guy that installed my central air explained the only good duct tape is the aluminum/fiber mesh stuff, that's nothing like the duct tape we know.
Modular Origami, similar to HM's tape creations.
where is HM? I'm all excited about this contest and he's off elsewhere.
I've been on travel. Just got back from a month in Kansas.
I may look into that contest, but I'd be well behind in cumulative clicks by the time I got anything made out of a new tape brand.
oh! Hiya HM. There's a space waiting for you in the I Know Where I am, thread.
Well, I found the tape, after looking in several stores.
Did you know Office Depot doesn't take manufacturers' coupons? Or at least this one didn't.
Do you have that feeling you're not in Kansas any more? :haha:
One of the tape manufacturing companies should release a line of duct-style tape marketed as McGyver Tape.
I'm picking out the photos to enter into the contest...
In the meantime, here's this year's Christmas present. Due to travel and the contest, there's just the one this year:

Excellent, the box too. :thumbsup::thumbsup:
I'm picking out the photos to enter into the contest...
Make sure to tell us where and when to vote!
I like how you sign your name. It reads the same upside down as right side up. But you probably knew that already.
That is so beautiful! HM, you gotta be able to do something with them professionally. I would buy one without hesitation, they are just amazing.
They're so labor/time intensive, he'd have to charge a fortune.
I like how you sign your name. It reads the same upside down as right side up. But you probably knew that already.
Yeah, I got a
book of ambigrams when I was a kid, and figured one out for myself. Luckily, all but the "tth" was pretty much a freebie.
That is so beautiful! HM, you gotta be able to do something with them professionally. I would buy one without hesitation, they are just amazing.
Thanks!
They're so labor/time intensive, he'd have to charge a fortune.
Pretty much. Some time I should actually time some of the easier ones, to see exactly how much of a fortune.
Unfortunately, I get the most enjoyment out of figuring out new ones. Even if I figured out a good price point, I'm worried it would become a chore.
My entry has been accepted at the Off the Roll contest! Please vote for me and spread the word!
Thanks!
I voted. It looks like you can vote each day.
I went to check out the competition, and only saw 6 other people had entered. That can't be right, can it? Yours is clearly the best.
I voted. It looks like you can vote each day.

Thanks!
It certainly appears that they anticipated more entries than they've had so far.
The other entries are completely different animals, wholly different art forms.
Remember folks, voting once a day makes you look younger, adds years to your life span, and supercharges your sex life. No, really.;)
The other entries are pretty much copies of the types of example sculptures Scotch came up with. Happy Monkey's is original.
Oh, and good luck! let me state this now . . .
A daily reminder is requested. I will certainly vote, but I will also forget.
ETA: I got 4 in there using my old junk email addresses.
It appears that Brittany, who is probably under 18, has a lot of myspace friends or something, because her work is clearly unspectacular.
Maybe a reminder thread? It will make this thread messy if there is a bump to it each day.
Looks like you can't vote again. I'll bump this thread occasionally for those who missed it this time.
Thanks to everyone who voted!
ETA: I got 4 in there using my old junk email addresses.
Good idea - I voted 3 times. Good luck, HM.
I did the same and I tweeted about it on twitter.
I'm up to #2! Thanks all!
My reading of the rules says that the votes are worth 10% in the final judging. So they are important, but HM's excellent pictures of the sculpture floating above the snow, his unique design, and the fine craftsmanship all count for more.
But I voted 3 times too.
hey is it just me or is MB in third place. We need to work this a little....
Trapeze guy has really surged in the last two days. But I'm a few votes from overtaking the boots.
20 ahead of the boots in solid second place, but 131 behind first place trapeze guy. He must be networking his ass off.
apparently there is no verification of your email address, even if you make a typo in it your vote still counts... if you catch my drift..... although probably best do do only a few in one session to avoid flooding concerns....
Yeah I just did that about 5 times...
ooh look it's up to 229 now
gotcha five more.
Here is the link for others to vote
hmmm trapeze is increasing by the same amount. vote more, peeps!
Looking good. Thanks!
I wish I'd been
boingboinged and
microsiervosed a bit later than I was... I got thousands of Flickr hits from each of them.
It's up to 327, but everyone
please vote.ok there's at least 5 more . . . C'mon people take 30 seconds and vote!
How do you know what the vote totals are?
and you can sort by votes. He's in 2nd place behind the trapeeze artist cast.
Thanks!
There's a strange new entry today...
oooh less than 100 behind the trapeze.
their vote checking thing is so simplistic it has me and my friend a@sshole wondering why they bother.....
doesn't even need an ampersand /disgusted IT grad
ooh, it appears i persuaded my friends The Alphabet to vote for you, one by one. How nice of them. I even let them use my computer. They love bright colors, you know -find the other stuff wishy-washy.
Some days it will let me vote, some days it won't.
are you using the same email addy?
There have been a few times that it told me I couldn't vote anymore, even with new email addresses. But then it lets me vote the next day.
not having that problem.... as you see it's now into the 400s and only 60ish behind the crapeze ;)
My friends "the alphabet" are currently sharing MB's genius with their Double Alphabet siblings. I expect their votes will start pouring in any time now
HM takes the lead, thanks to my friends 1 at aol.com through 50 at aol.com!
My measly vote has been cast!

They make permanent markers.
And, while I appreciate the voting efforts, I might suggest keeping the "friends" to a dull roar. I don't see anything in the rules, but I'd hate to be disqualified, or to leave a bad taste in the judges' mouths when they tally votes...
Ah, they do make permanent markers. I've "glazed" paper-mâché with elmer's glue and markers.
One of the other sculptures has clearly more than 10% of the mass of the thing made up of pebbles used as ballast. It should be disqualified. Also, the cricket bat one uses a ball that clearly has more mass than the entire tape sculpture itself. One has rope lighting all winding around in it. Each of them uses materials other than tape that would be more then 10% of the mass of the thing.
When I was building mine, people suggested lighting it. One factor in deciding not to do that was the time and complication involved, but another was the fact that it doesn't take much material to weigh more than 10% more than tape.
I used a fair bit of permanent ink, but I think I'm safely below the 10% mark...
I'm losing ground, so if anyone hasn't voted, please do!
I was just wondering about this - When do the polls close?
They still won't let me vote again.
pssst - use a bogus email addy
That's dishonest, you ballot box stuffing conservative. :p Besides, I'm not going to plug in somebody else's email and have them get spammed. The voting also only counts 10%, and if the judges find out the email addresses are not valid, HM may suffer in the judging.
I have more than one email addy...I used all of them. I wonder if they bother tracking?
I used all mine too, I think that's legit.

Just listening to what Ed Schultz said on MSNBC.
Delete the cookie, then vote again?
Nope, I clear the cookies a couple times a day, with cclearer.
Speaking of tape creations, History Channel had a Myth Buster episode last night where the whole episode was all the things made with Duct (Duck) Tape. It was pretty cool. They lifted a full sized car with 100 strips, repaired a hole in a boat, and built a fully functional cannon which fired a 10 pound cannon ball about 150 feet. And finally they built a fully functional 15 foot sail boat out of 23 rolls with a steel frame and sailed it all over the bay. Pretty damm impressive.
I saw that one. That's a good show.
Thread bump post bumps thread.
But, yeah, the duct tape stuff was awesome.
Germans call it Panzer Tape. you know there's duct tape and there's DUCT tape. We've got some MIL Sec stuff at work that would rip the balls off a brass monkey.
Some of that choice is working its way down to the masses... I was in Lowes recently and wound up getting Tough duct tape with No Residue, for those times when you don't want to tear off the tape and leave patches of grey goo.
Also of note is the availability of industrial strength Velcro™, with industrial strength adhesive. Sadly, I'm not into bondage S&M, or the possibilities would be endless.

As opposed to those times when that's just what you want!
I'm a big fan of duct tape in theory, but find it rather unpleasant in practice. If there's a non-goo version available, I'm all for it.
I just voted with two email addies.
This one displays an interesting geometric relationship:
The tape itself is an icosahedron (or a D20 in D&D terms) with a pyramid on each face. But stringing thread between each pyramid point creates a dodecahedron (D12).
Cool! I see the pentagons in the thread.
Aw, anybody can do that. All I'd need is some tape, markers, a hundred years and fifty boxes of band-aids.
Don't forget gold thread!
Oh yeah, I could use it to help hold the band-aids on, too.
Less than a week to go on the contest voting. I'm currently #15 out of 73, which isn't too bad.
I ended up 18 out of 144 in voting.
Results come in on or about April 30.
If the judges have any taste at all, you will win this.
Alas, no joy. As for the judges' taste, even taking mine out of the running, I'd only put the angel one near the top of the entries. Ah, well... Maybe they'll do it again next year.
Encouraging people to build those big figures sells more tape.
to be fair, I think the vision of the contest holders was more along the lines of the lost mold types. HM's geometrical structure was relatively unconventional.
to be fair, I think the vision of the contest holders was more along the lines of the lost mold types. HM's geometrical structure was relatively unconventional.
That's true, but they were basing a large part of the score on originality. I guess the judges didn't actually want what they said they wanted.
Sorry HM! You were robbed.
I love Permacel Gaffer's tape. I guess it is now Shurtape.
I think you were robbed too. I like the goldfish one, but it's not in the same class as yours. The other three? you can keep 'em. Where is the originality?
Thanks!
Here's my consolation prize:

How many rolls did you use for yours? Did you get back more than you put in? (ignoring time and effort)
I used three rolls, so I'm well ahead in the tape department.
i have one of those wrapping paper cutters. love it. somehow, I've managed to find it on christmas eve for the last 3 years.
It does look like a pretty useful design. That and the scissors will be the handiest.
Though the 6-pack of tape may be useful if there's another off-the-roll contest.
Another one using the "Off the Roll" tape:

I've entered a
Washington Post craft contest. I'm not sure if you can view the entries if you don't have an account. No voting on this one.
I've also begun work on one for this year's Off The Roll contest. I don't know if I'll have the time to finish it. I have til the end of February, but it's ambitious. And the later I enter, the less time for votes.
Happy, Are you # 8 of 166 ?
I like them, but they may be to subtle for that contest.
Happy, Are you # 8 of 166 ?
At the moment, I'm #8 and 9. The numbers change as more entries are added. My washpo username is matthewwb.
I like them, but they may be to subtle for that contest.
Possibly.
Your entries are completely different from all the others.
So you'll walk-away with 1st prize this time.
HM, your work is dazzling as always. Thanks for sharing it.
I see you work in very regular triangles, have you ever considered something that isn't an enclosed (roughly spherical) piece? I think the math geek in your would be able to produce some lovely flower shapes based on the Fibonacci series, like perhaps
a sunflower seed head.
Thanks!
I am working on something that isn't spherical or fully enclosed, but it is regular.
Unfortunately, my chosen medium is somewhat limited. Natural shapes (sunflowers, snails) work because the size of the components get progressively smaller as you go in, and I've only got a few sizes of tape. And tape only folds cleanly into certain regular shapes.
I've made a few freeform objects, but they haven't really inspired me.
You're welcome.
I can imagine triangles, squares, pentagons. From this set, many others can be assembled. Do you work strictly with only one width of tape per project?
Pretty much, otherwise the edges don't match.
Unfortunately, LabRat is gone, but many years later, I finally made a string of them (the whilte ones are the new ones).

Serendipity carries the day... that's a nice display
My plan for this year's Off the Roll contest. I haven't entered yet, as I'm still figuring out how to photograph it.

My plan for this year's Off the Roll contest. I haven't entered yet, as I'm still figuring out how to photograph it.
Your plans look even more complicated than the final product.
See that blue fuzzball at the top? Each intersection is made of six isosceles right triangles, as shown (you can zoom in through flickr). The double-lined edges meet their opposing member on the other side. What more direction could you possibly need?
Your ways frighten and confuse me.
I realize you are working with folding tape, but still, you and
Eric Demaine must have some genes in common ;)
I came across the web pages with his " Waves-in-Glass" back when you posted your X-mas ornaments.
If these links to his
Cut-and-Fold web page is broken, you can still get there by Google
My brain doesn't begin to go in those directions, so I envy your creativity, and look forward to seeing your "ball of blue fuzz" in 3-dimensions
I used 13½ rolls of packing tape.

I've entered! I'll pass on the link to my entry when it's approved. Meanwhile, here's a
video preview.
Fantastic! What are it's dimensions?
Thanks!
It's about 40 inches in diameter.
that's got to win.
(the alien apostrophe in my last post is bugging me.....)
It's really impressive! It certainly deserves to win. It's huge and interesting.
It's about 40 inches in diameter.
Wow, just wow!
Yay! I got the first vote in!
I've broken the 100 mark, and almost in the top five. :)
Excellent. Can I vote for yours on multiple days? I thought it said you could only vote for one once. But maybe I misunderstood and that's once per day.
Once per email address. The voting rules are odd; once per sculpture, but 10 sculptures per day. It's like they were expecting hundreds and hundreds of entries.
Once per sculpture but 10 sculptures per email, do you mean???
Anyway, I voted. I can vote under different emails though, if that'll work.
Once per sculpture per email total, but ten sculptures per email address per day. So you could vote for every entry over the course of three days (there are about thirty entries as of now), and then not be able to vote at all.
I've broken 200 votes, and am in fourth place.
Sweet! I'd vote more if I could.
With a couple of days to go, I am over 350 votes, but have dropped to seventh place.
Final tally, 8th place with 360 votes. Results in late March/early April.
8th place will at least get you into the judges' consideration. It's up to them now, right? You could still win if they choose you?
Yes. The voting is only a small part of the judging criteria. I think I have a good chance of getting a prize (out of one $5000 and three $500 prizes).
Well, you're on their radar. Good luck!
Good luck. I honestly think yours is the best entry.
I won first prize!
One of them, at least.
$500 won't make a great hourly wage, but I'm not in it for the money.
That is awesome! :celebrat:
Congratulations! :)
Most Freaking Excellent :D Well done.
Outstanding!!!
Congratulations Happy Monkey!
I still refuse to believe that you don't :joint: while you're making those things....

I watch TV.
I especially like that first one.
Yeah, me too. It's funny, all the time I was working on it, I didn't notice that angle, and then when it was on the tree, I could only see it as a snowflake.
I've entered the 2012 Off the Roll contest. Voting opens April 19th. They've altered the voting rules this time, so early entries don't get a head start.
So get your voting fingers ready.
That is completely awesome! Voting finger ready to fire and dip in the purple ink!
Voting fingers are off the hook; I didn't make the final five. Maybe they don't go for abstract, or maybe they don't want to go for last year's winners.
Oh, well. Time to start thinking about how and where to hang this one, and then start thinking about next year.
Aw crap. I missed this when I was on vacation. I didn't vote at all. sorry!
Nobody did; voting opened today on some judges' picks. They changed the voting procedure this year.
I entered the
Washington Post Holiday Craft Contest. Throw a vote my way if you've got an account. It's a weird page, that shows up completely different for me on Firefox and IE. The Firefox one allowed me to vote, while the IE one just showed a slideshow.
Cool! I voted. I like the gold thread.

I like it and I "Liked" it.
A "Like" is a vote, correct?
I assume so, but the page is hard to follow.
Thanks!
I don't think it is. (And yes the page is really hard to follow. I was all over the place until I found this rule):
5. From on or around
December 10 until on or around
December 14, there will be an online vote for a Readers’ Choice winner among a selection of finalists. Finalists will be selected by newsroom judges based on originality of concept and skill in execution

I wonder if likes change the location of the image on the page.
and the page is a freakin mess.
You can change the sort order, which puts more likes near the top, but doesn't seem to be in exact order. By default, it's in order of submission.
The 'likes' may have an influence on the judges who will be picking the finalists from which we will pick our favorites. Maybe not, but to cover bases we all need to go 'like' HM's creation.
go MONKEY go!
I haven't Flickr'd in a while. Here are my Christmas 2012 ornaments:
Rhombic hexecontahedron inside a rhombic hexecontahedron:
This one I wrapped with double sided tape, then laid a single gold thread around it, and wrapped it again with regular tape.

I was surprised to see your post until I saw the date. Can you even do tape work in this humidity?
Yes, but I haven't done much recently. There's one I haven't photographed yet.
Not only do I not know how you form the original rhombic what-cha-ma-call-it,
I don't see doing it with double-sticky tape without leaving skin or fingerprints behind.
Then, to lay the gold thread so nicely even.
And besides all that:
What's the technique for laying the next layer of tape ?
And besides all that:
I like this one best of all I've seen of your work, HM.
Well done !
Thanks, I think it's my favorite, too.
There are fingerprints, if you look closely, but they don't photograph. If I keave skin, I scrape it off with an X-Acto.
The next layer was tricky; if I had to lift it back due to a misalignment, I would often have to reposition the thread underneath. Luckily, the sharp corners meant that the thread wouldn't pull up past an edge, so any repositioning was limited.
They're hollow, aren't they? Have you thought of filling them with stuff? Beads. Glitter. Tiny Unicorns. Other hexacombotetramongotesseracts? Oh wait, you already did that. So cool Happy Monkey, so, so cool.
There's one that I put a lot of effort into, where the gold thread criss-crosses between the points. The effect was nowhere near as interesting as I hoped.
I made
one of these for each of my new nephews.
(It's a flickr video link that won't embed here.)
HM, very nice ... again. You have mastered the art form.
I took the liberty of continuing on thru some of your collection of pics,
and was struck by the correspondence between pics of cherry blossoms
and of your Tapecraft... they do seem to have an essential connection.
I recognized some of the DC pics as having been posted here before,
but did not remember the pics of tree roots. For some reason,
when I'm out fishing I tend to notice the unusual trees, limbs,
and especially exposed roots. Weird me, eh ?
I'm not sure there's so much of a correspondence of production as there is of posting to Flickr. Tapecraft and cherry blossoms are a major staple of my Flickr account, and sometimes getting around to posting one will also end up in me posting the other.
As for roots, it's not so wierd. There's even a Flickr group just for
tree feet.
HM, those color changers are very cool.
You certainly have mastered the craft, they're marvelous. :thumb2:
How do they hold up over time?
Yeah, well done!
That top one reminds me of tic tac toe. But a 3D version.
How do they hold up over time?
Surprisingly well. The very first ones I made were little cubes that I put in my window, so they faded, and the
buckyball is very delicate, but the rest of them show no signs of age.
Cool, that is a surprise.
A heavy-duty one as a gift for a soon-to-be one-year-old nephew.

Now the real durability test!
Nice, looks like a lot of work.
Is that two different perspectives of one creation, or two different creations?
Is that two different perspectives of one creation, or two different creations?
It looks like two different creations to me.
HM, have you ever considered stuff like
Uniform Tilings when doing work like this? I do not understand the math behind practically all of that page, but I do recognize some of the illustrations from my imagination. I think of a dodecahedron, a regular polyhedron made up of triangular faces. Then, I see regular pentagons formed from your groups of five equilateral triangles and I wondered if those pentagons could be used to uniformly tile a sphere. And that's when I googlized wikipedia. I see triangles and pentagons and squares under your sub-units of triangles. It makes me wonder if you do all of this freestyle, just making a shape to connect to a previous shape, until you get to the last ones where you'd have to do some thinking, like a 3D game of Nim.
It looks like two different creations to me.
HM, have you ever considered stuff like Uniform Tilings when doing work like this?
Not explicitly, though I assume that that type of math is involved when new polyhedra are discovered.
I think of a dodecahedron, a regular polyhedron made up of triangular faces. Then, I see regular pentagons formed from your groups of five equilateral triangles and I wondered if those pentagons could be used to uniformly tile a sphere.
Actually, a dodecahedron IS a pentagon-tiled sphere - 12 pentagons. The one with 20 triangles is an icosahedron.
It makes me wonder if you do all of this freestyle, just making a shape to connect to a previous shape, until you get to the last ones where you'd have to do some thinking, like a 3D game of Nim.
That most describes the process when I made this one (shown in progress):

I made a corner, by making an icosahedron with 3 pentagons removed and replaced by rings of triangles. It looked like it might make something, so I made more corners until they met. The math isn't quite right, so as I got to the end, I had to use the flexibility of the material to pull it into shape, and certain interior parts look crushed.
There's another one I made by trial and error, which I'll post soon.
Usually, I have a polyhedron in mind from the web or a book, and I replace non-triangle faces with a pyramid made of triangles. That's how I made my favorite shape:
I found a polyhedron pattern, and replaced pentagons with concave pentagonal pyramids, and triangles with convex triangular pyramids, and it turned out that the faces of those lined up, creating diamond-shaped faces. And the resulting shape is actually the logo of
Wolfram Alpha.
Here's the other one that I made with no plan:
Technically, both this one and the 700-piecer are the second ones I made after I made the original ones with no plan.
HM, I don't know if you're exclusive to tape, but, I thought you might like this:

My latest contest entry.
Voting will be August 7-24.
Not sure how Instagrammed entries get added to the
contest page, presumably manually. So it should hopefully show up officially on Monday.
I'd be scared to move that thing.
It's surprisingly sturdy. I've moved it by wearing it as a hat.
Ha ha ha, pics or it didn't happen. :D
I'm traveling so no pics, unfortunately.
But my entry has been accepted!
http://makeamazingcontest.scotchbrand.com/EntryDetails.aspx?EntryID=102Nice! Link doesn't work yet though.
Hm. Now I'm not showing up in the entry list, but the direct link to my entry still works. I wonder if I've been disqualified for some reason.
Voting is open!
Please vote for matthewwbuckley, not W.Unruh. That entry was either a resubmission of my picture or there's a bug in the voting page.
At least yours is towards the top of the page and the counterfeit is at the bottom.
Thanks! They've fixed the other entry now, so there should be no confusion.
but there's a giant cock right above yours!
you're asking a lot here, bro
That guy has 3 entries. Which is stupid. They are all very nice, but he's diluting his votes.
Yours is intricate, hm, but kind of disturbing. It reminds me of entrails... Aptly titled...
I'll still vote for you, though. Good luck!
Yes, sorry. They want your email to vote. My apologies if they use it for nefarious purposes.

Hey Monkey, you're in the top 3 now.
Cool, thanks!
Here's the build in progress:
First I made 35 triangles, then taped them together into 3 strips and a big and small triangle as shown in the top left. Then I taped the strips around the big triangle, as shown top right. Then I closed the strips into loops, and put the small triangle in, opposite the big one, as in the bottom left. I did that 4 more times, and taped them together into a loop, in the bottom right. All of that was interior tape, so finally I wrapped it on the outside, which truly strengthened it.
Then I continued, adding 15 more of the bottom left units.
A side view:

I just moved into fourth, but I need to be in the top three to get to the next round of judging.
looks like you can only vote 10 times per ip address per day
I was taking a bunch of pictures for the contest, and Google automatically grabbed them and turned some of them into
wiggle-3D images.
I had no idea they did that. I need to file that away for future use.
Yeah, I ended up somehow enabling Google backup of images on my phone, and Google collects them and does random stuff with them.
Anyway, here's a view while I was wrapping it, once I had put all the pieces together with internal tape.
On this, and some of the wiggle-3d images, you can see thread betwen the arms. I later determined it wasn't necessary, and removed it.

Have to admit, there's some very clever and skilled people in this contest.
Two voting days left!
I don't like my chances.
I'm voting as fast as I can open new private windows for each vote!
So guess what?
I won!
I guess all the paperwork has to be in before they announce it, but they notified me, and I've submitted my signed release form.
:celebrat:
What do you win, more tape?
What do you win, more tape?
Quite a bit more tape - $5000
Thanks all, and thanks to everyone who voted!
Congratulations, that's fantastic! I voted, but not as often as I would have liked, I'm so glad you won. That was an amazing piece. What happens to it now?
Congrats, HM. I voted too, except when I forgot. So glad you won.
I'm famous!
(On websites that republish 3M press releases.)
Less ambitious:
It's made from
this tape, and I can't imagine for what use that tape is intended. It's pale pastel with 10-15 layers, and completely invisible with one layer. Why would you want (unless you're me) colored tape where the color is too pale to see?
does it do weird stuff under uv or black lighting maybe? or maybe they DID make it for YOU!
SteveF didn't like it. ( the only review gave it 1☼ ) he didn't realize it would be sheer. i guess he means clear.
Maybe. I just ordered a blacklight bulb. I'll see if it does anything.

2014 Christmas Presents
And the fruit boxed with appropriately flavored candy:

I'd like to have a few of those cherries. Do you work on commission? They would be awesome hanging from the money tree on my desk.
Wish I could. The little fruits are approaching something I might be able to sell; the Cellar will be the first to know if I ever decide to do it.
Whoa! I really like the fruits, and the way they're packaged too. Very cute.
HM, those are impressive! I think they'd definitely sell, I see crafted stuff like that at markets in the city all the time. I like the 8-bit/Minecraft-y feel to them. Most excellent.
A simple mod to my old standby shape:

The rhombuses have simply had their centers cut out, right? You're not joining hollow segments to form the tiles, right? I tried to imagine if the "hollow segments" were triangular in cross section or only "L" in cross section, and I think I see now they're "L"s with each leg of the L an edge of a given tile.
As for the method, do you make many tiles, then connect them together (duh, of course you do) but I mean when do you remove the centers? When they're separate tiles on your work surface or when you've assembled the happymonkeygagon?
I made the rhombuses, then cut out the centers. Then I made the individual points, with 3 rhombuses each, with tape on the inside holding them together, and extending out to make tabs. Using those tabs, I taped the points together, and as each point was completely surrounded, I cut the center out of the internal tape on each rhombus of that point. Then, I wrapped it, and once it was fully wrapped, I went around and cut out the centers of the outer layer of tape.
Right on time I was thinking about these this week.
Birthday presents for my mom:

Nice, do you have a rough idea how long it takes you to make one like that? To some people that may sound like a dumb question, but I'd imagine you do that in more than one sitting, and could be multitasking so the time frame may be fuzzy.
Not entirely sure... Less than 6 hours, I think. I think each one may have taken 1.5 to 2 nights, but I'm not sure how long each session was (I'd be watching TV or the Youtube app, and keep going one more show/video until I got to a good place to stop.
Yeah, I figured you'd be multitasking, thanks.
For those of us who don't have HM's talent or patience, but would still like to amaze and amuse your guests, you can cheat.
Thomas Houha builds cool dodads and sells them in kit form, so you can say, "Yes, I built it", with a straight face. ;)
This one, for example, is $32. Now back to the real talent thread.
Along those lines, I've been doing some
Star Wars "Metal Earth" kits. They're fun, though the results can vary pretty wildly.
Vary wildly because of the quality from the source, or the skill/patience of the assembler?
A little from column A, a little from column B.
There are some models with joints that I found extremely difficult to make solid. Maybe I just missed a good way to do it, or maybe they were just poor joints. Either way, my TIE fighter has wiggly wings.
The Star Destroyer, however, is solid as a brick. The AT-AT and Millennium Falcon are almost as good.
It's also a function of how solid the eventual shape is. The Star Destroyer is very solid and angular, so it's got an inherent advantage. The TIE is a hard design to do; I just don't think they sufficiently overcame that difficulty.
I can see the TIE would be a tough shape, usually the best tact is to not make the joint where two planes meet, but mold that transition and move the assembly joint out a little from the junction. They probably figure these won't be played with like toys, but usually only moved to show someone or for dusting. Or they think you might get frustrated and buy another kit. :haha:
Made using a triangle hole punch and the packaging from a phone case and screen protector.
It's only taped on the inside, so it looks sort of loose.

This pattern is a bit more regular:

I feel like we must have asked this before, but have you ever posted any of these on etsy?
Happy Monkey, your work is amazing, and intriguing. The best kind of convergence of art and science.
You're doing great work, and I imagine you get much satisfaction from both the process and the finished piece.
Thanks! No I haven't sold any of them.

No cubes. Tetrahedrons all the way down.
A Serpinski tetrahedron framed in cubes????
I figured out what you were referring to - the wires in the picture of it in the box. They do look like cubes, now that you mention it. But that's just the angle; it's the exact same wires as in the other pics.
I like the Sierpinski Tetrahedron. I've only sen these previously in candy corn.

I found some mirror (actual glass mirror) equilateral triangle self-adhesive craft tiles, and made my old standby rhombic hexecontahedron.

That should gift some interesting effects. :thumb:
Another one:
First the plans:
The smallest diagram is a layout of pentagons relative to triangles.
The biggest one indicates a route from one end (pentagon 1) to the other (pentagon 5), in red, and the beginning of a mirror of it in orange.
The medium one shows all five loops from pentagon 1 to pentagon 5 and back.
Then some steps:

Paper triangles (patterned and blue, back to back), embedded in tape, and held together with monofilament.
Following the plan, each pair of paper triangles was taped to the string, with care taken as to which side of the line it should be on, if the patterned side were face up. They are labeled with which pentagon they are part of.
The bottle rings designate pentagon five, the top of the model.
There is one extra triangle labeled five, due to a mistake. It was removed and repurposed as the model was completed.
Starting with each of the triangles marked '1', start to match the nearby triangles with matching numbers. Wherever there's a figure 8 in the plans, cross over the monofilament. Temporarily tape the triangles together. Add unlinked triangles where appropriate (there are ten triangles with no monofilament through them).
Not pictured: Keep following the crossovers and matching the pentagon numbers from the plans, as full pentagons are formed, remove the temporary tape, and tape them together permanently.
And the final product:

Did you invent this procedure or learn it from someone else?
You should patent or copyright it. The foundation for the HM School of Tape Creations. :thumb:
come quite a way since 2003
Just obsessive, once I get an idea in my head.

My dad wants me to write a book... But I'm pretty sure that the instructions I write do more to make people think it's extremely difficult than make them think they could do it. Not a good start for a school.

Do you have an Instagram or any other outlet for getting exposure for this work? This is a *unique contribution to human culture* --which is the pinnacle, really, of achievement. You should definitely write a book, IMHO, FWIW. I think you could get a cult following. People like to do all kind of hard things, like learning the ukulele, or whatever.
At the very least--and a very cool scenario-- someone will discover your book in the future, 100 years, 500 years from now. Your contribution to human culture will be immortal. Children in classrooms on space stations will be studying you.
Just Flickr. Hopefully that remains viable now that it's being bought again.
I have a couple of short (<10 secs) videos on Youtube.
Not really. Especially if it requires any effort on my part.
Yeah, that's what I thought. :yesnod:
You're already expending a ton of time and effort making these things.
This year's Christmas gifts.
One is made with cherry wood tape (real wood, not wood pattern), with green tape peeking through the joints.
Two have color-changing units from children's toys.
And the rest are stars made from the lids of Maggiano's takeout tins left over from a catered lunch.

Cool, I see the silver ones have hanging strings. Are the Maggiano's lids like a heavy aluminum foil?

Light cardboard, silvered on ones side with very thin foil, along the lines of
these.
The box for the wooden ornament:
Foamcore and tape, with magnets to hold it shut.

Never thought I'd say this to a man, but...
...Nice box.
Damn, the box rivals the gift. Very unusual unless the recipient is a cat. :haha:

It's a new age brother.
At last, control for fun and safety...
Technically it helps you walk a stellated dodecahedron; the regular dodecahedron is the harness.
Mother's day present. Difficult to photograph. It phases from light on top to dark on the bottom. Made of a Giant brand tissue box.

Thank you.. A dog harness isn't made of dog, for example..
Large humans harness small humans.

True, but not with material made from humans.
Large humans harness small humans.
They can try.

I remember my folks gave me a lot of shit. ;)

Vurry niiize...
I tried to find a picture of that Giant Brand Tissue Box but all I can find on Google is yellow/white with a little green. :(
I tried, too. What's really annoying is that if you put "-kleenex" in the search, it fills the first section of sponsored links with Kleenex.
Yes, have to stay away from brand names and names of anyone in sports or entertainment.
Ha, try to Google someone with the name Lannister.
I didn't know there's a bazillion facial tissue box designs.
This is the one:

At last, control for fun and safety...
I got one.

This is the one:
Thank you, it was annoying me that I couldn't find that damn box. Did you do the entire piece with one box or need more?
I got one.
Excellent, now get a stylish leash as you'll cut quite a figure walking your dodecahedron down the promenade. :thumb:
One box was enough, with a fair bit to spare.
OK, I though the shading on the box was so varied you might not want the extreme light or dark.
I tried to make it fade from one end to the other.
I made another one of these:

Here are a couple of shots in progress:

I think we can say without question that you are a glutton for punishment.
HM, I'm sure you know all about this shit but it followed me home, and I can't keep it.
Polyhedra?
Never heard of her.
A book with a 17 ft page? He is out there isn't he.
Reminds me of The Wall Chart of World History (From Earliest Times To The Present.
One of these for each of my siblings' families:

The big ones are for my littlest niece and nephew, and the center one is for my mom:

And the box:

Iridescent party plates? Really?
These, though I found an 8-pack at a party supply store.
Wow, I've never seen those. I should buy some so I can get part of the zillion dollar settlement down the road when they determine they cause beriberi or something. ;)
A spiral of the iridescent and blue from the IBM annual report:
A peek inside before I put on the last star:
The final star:

I'm lost, are the first two pictures the top and bottom view of the same item?
I think the first picture is he final thing and the second is a jump back in time to pre-completion (missing the piece in the third pic)
First is the top of the final product, second is the bottom view, but before the last piece was placed, showing the spiral on the inside. Third is the last piece.
