College Basketball

There is a March Madness thread, but I just wanted to start some general college basketball banter... what's going on in your local athletic conference? Who's looking good? Who looks like crap?

I live in ACC country and am a huge Tar Heel fan, but I love college basketball in general and would like to hear thoughts from others as to what's going on with your fave teams... Plus, come bracket time, I'll make much more educated picks :).

I'm a (Georgia) Tech fan but we don't have a lot to talk about yet. With Elder out, we can't find a groove. Also, one of our assistants left after last year to take over James Madison's program (Dean Keener) and there is some speculation that we have not yet figured out how to make up what he contributed (to our half-court O which seems to have vanished). We are also missing our all-world freshman Jerimis Smith who busted his knee a couple months ago. Both he and Elder should be back very soon - maybe next week.

What's up with F$U knocking off Wake??? Looks like only VT is going to suck this year. We (the ACC) could end up sending 7 to the NCAA. And if that weren't enough, undefeated and #9 Boston College joins the conference next year after which it will be the NBA, the ACC and, coming in a distant third, the rest of the college BB world.

GT was 6-7 with three ACC games to play last year (we won all 3) so I'm not worried... yet. NC looks like the team to beat in the conference so far. Too bad we won't get a 2nd crack at you guys at our place with the new sched and all.

I don't like the new schedule... I want to play Wake Forest again and we certainly need to play Tech again.

I don't know if VT is going to end up being the worst team or not... NC State is looking pretty bad!

Well, lessee...

On the home front: St. Louis and Missouri suck so far. Illinois is whipping ass. SIU is having another great season. And maybe someday, SEMO will be as good in Div. 1 as they were in Div. 2.

Here in Philadelphia, it's a mixed bag. We have 9 Division I teams in the area, with 6 followed closely by the media. Thus far:

--Temple and St. Joe's could go to the Big Dance if they do well in A-10 play. LaSalle has sucked for a while, and has problems beyond the court.
--Villanova started strong, but has cooled a bit. Haven't heard much about Rutgers.
--If Old Dominion keeps playing well in the CAA, Drexel and Delaware don't have a chance.
--Haven't heard much about Princeton...and I'm not sure what's up with Penn.

And fuck the Tar Heels...go Terps! :)

I like Coach K and his program, but I don't root for Duke that often, and certainly not when they play Maryland.

I grew up in NC, and went to school in Durham and Greensboro. I college basketball allegiances are, in order, Duke; Duke; UNC; And whoever else is playing from the ACC.

Having said that I pay it no attention these days. I used to take off work the Friday of the ACC tournament and watch the whole thing, but I just don't have time these days.

I do think that the recent expansion of the ACC was a really rotten idea.

KU is clinging to their undefeated record and #2 national ranking. They looked pretty lame against Nebraska last night. They should have whipped thier butts, but managed to squeak out a 2-point victory.

Bad free-throw shooting and excessive turnovers, plus injuries, are hurting the 'Hawks, but hey...a win is a win is a win.

I've tried very hard, but I just can't get excited about basketball, college or pro.

Here in KC, a stone's throw from Lawrence, birthplace of basketball and final resting place of its inventor, it is hard not to get worked up about it. It sort of rubs off, kind of like a regional dialect.

KU sucks donkey dick...they must be eradicated.*

My dream matchup - KU v. UNC... I just think that would be the start of the apocolypse or something.
Elspode • Jan 21, 2005 5:03 pm
MU, unfortunately, appears to be assuming a kneeling position in preparation for a little bestial frolic of their own, Syc. Sorry, but they're vast underachievers.

My opinions may have something to do with the fact that I attended a college with a great marching band ... and suck-ass sports teams.

Dream for you. Nightmare for Kansas. Game over before it starts. Having played both KU and UNC this year, (GT is the only team that has played both) I think I am qualified to render an opinion.

Indeed...I don't know what the hell is wrong with Mizzou this year. They're just not consistent like they used to be.

It isn't really about talent... it's more about KU fans still being bitter about Roy Williams leaving KU for UNC. Maybe they aren't bitter anymore, but we like to think that they are. :p

From today's sports scores: Villanova 83, Kansas 62.

Tip 'O the Hat to the 'Cats. I'm a closet Big 5 fan from my years in Philly. And our head coach used to be an asst at 'Nova.

Oooooo....March Madness...*drool, drool...* Damn, I haven't been keeping up with college hoops lately. "Fear The Turtle!"

I live in ACC country and am a huge Tar Heel fan,

BOOO! Heh, sorry. Anti Tar Heels & Duke fan.

I have to check out http://theacc.collegesports.com/ to see what's going on.

Since we have some Maryland fans... I pose this question - What is Maryland's problem? Destroy Duke at Cameron, then lose to Clemson... I don't get it.

While I am a Tar Heel fan, I do cheer for Maryland. I love Gary Williams... he hates Coach K about as much as I do. Plus, my greatest basketball moment in recent years:

Chris Duhon has the ball, dribbling it down the court to the half court line, he looks to his coach for the call... Steve Blake swoops out of no where, steals the ball, makes a basket for Maryland and Duke goes on to lose by 20.

Classic.

On another note, Adam Morrison of Gonzaga - HOTTIE!!!

The things that have been nagging KU finally caught up to them in spades. Hopefully, it served as a wakeup call, although their first half performance against hapless MU would seem to indicate not. They come back and spank the crap out of the Tigers in the second half, though.
