1/6/2005: Guatemalan "burning of the devil"

In Guatemala they engage in this ritual "burning of the devil" -- but I don't trust the official caption's explanation that they are "removing the devil, sending it to heaven", because that's the sort of vague explanation that usually turns out to be wrong.

Also it seems unlikely that setting the devil on fire would result in a destination of heaven.

Looks to be another one less than half a block away. I wonder how many are in a given neighborhood...

the second one is a detroit pistons fans' party. easy to mistake, though.

The devil lives in hell. This puny fire is probably like a cold shower to him. :flamer:

It's just another pagan/xtian mutation/fusion, move along.

What the hell? I'll bet the Devil made them do it. ;)

Every time someone mentions Guatemal I'm reminded of something George Carlin said:

You show me a tropical fruit and I'll show you a cock-sucker from Guatamala.

If that's the devil in the foreground getting roasted, I wonder whose effigy is getting torched in the background.

His evil twin.

Thats a cool image even if the heat appears to be turned up to the max. One of the best looking devils I've ever seen. If he makes it to heaven, I may still have a chance.
So cool............ I may not have to take my prozac ever again.

So, if there's a Chinese custom of burning paper representations of things in order to give the real deal to the deceased ancestors, and they are right about that ... what happens when you burn a paper mache devil?
