Word on the streets is that bullets kill sharks too. And I'm guessing that those dudes holding the guns are pretty good marksmen.
I think I remember reading that many divers carried "boom sticks" - basically, it was two poles - one wider than the other. The thinner tube went inside the larger tube, and at the end of the large tube was a shotgun shell. The thinner one had like a nail on the end. So when the thinner one was slammed into the larger one (presumably with the shell-end of the stick up against an attacking shark), the nail whapped the firing pin and BAM! You don't get eaten by a shark. But I could be making this up too. I'm pretty sure I read it, though. :)
