This is our local duck pond doing what it does best.

The token duck.

And the pet gopher. To go fer beer, I guess.

Nice pictures Bit, good color saturation on the mallard! I don't know much about gophers but I always thought they just dug holes, didn't know they liked to swim too.

I think that gopher is a muskrat....I have seen them out in CO but am not sure of the range in the midwest.

I think you're right FD. I've alway associated gophers with prairies and, well, gopher holes. I've seen muskrats here in CT while kayaking in ponds and rivers but never had a chance to take a picture of one...yet.

I did not see a reefer hanging out of that duck's bill, so I can hardly see why you would refer to him as a token duck...

Yep, looks like a muskrat. Which explains why it was swimming around annoying the geese, instead of getting them beer.

And that's "token", not "tokin'". Look it up next time.

For those of you with muskrat love:

I took some pictures of the ducks and geese at a local pond this past summer too. I thought this duck was kind of unique shaking off the water, I wasn't even taking a picture of him in particular. It's cropped from a picture of a bunch of ducks just floating around, doing what ducks do.
