Anyone else catch the lunar eclipse?

Anyone else see this one? Badger and I had a bit of cloud cover to contend with, but it's amazing how well a pair of binox or a small scope will deal with the interference. We took this one with the 3.5" refractor and the digicam.

Nice shot. I missed the eclipse, because it was too cloudy. I saw the last one like a year ago. They are fun.

So does anyone know what makes the moon slightly illuminated even when it's within the umbra of the Earth's shadow? It's a red color then. From the Moon's perspective, the Sun is hidden behind the Earth, so I bet the Sun is shining through the thin layer of the Earth's atmosphere, and it's the color of a sunset. So the Moon is red as a result.

I'm just guessing, so I could be wrong. Anybody know? Also, does anyone know if there are any pictures of the lunar eclipse from the Moon's point of view?

I was in class most of the time, but I got out for fifteen minuts or so and caught part of it. Pretty cool. And yesterday was my sisters' birthday too. I'll have to remember to send her card next year....

That's pretty much it. The scattering effect of the atmosphere pulls some sunlight around the edges of the Earth, getting redder the whole way.

That's also why the intensity of color during an eclipse can't be predicted in advance. It depends on the cloud cover / pollution levels here on Earth!
Next one's going to be in 2007, I believe.

I tried to find a picture of the dark side of Earth showing the orange halo of all the world's sunrises and sunsets at once, but I can't find one. I think that would be a really cool picture. The best I could find was a few sunset/sunrise pictures from the space shuttle.

We were clouded out too. Sniff.

There were a couple of total eclipses back when Pinatubo had been erupting, and man, those were blood-red.

I had to be at work early this morning so I couldn't stay up to watch the eclipse but I did take some shots of the moon at dusk. The cloud cover and the brightness of the moon last night made for some interesting looking pictures, just wish I couldv'e gotten the eclipse too.

Well, 404Error--if that isn't the cover of a Fleetwood Mac album I don't know what is.
Another GREAT FREAKIN' shot!

You are so hired!

(for the handfasting of me and xoxoxobruce--shhh! he doesn't know yet...)

Nice clear skys in South Florida. All I had to take pictures with was my Olympus 750 digital with it's 10x optical zoom. A little blury compared to yours.

I saw it...we had nice crystal clear skies here so it was a show from start to finish. Made me feel good to be able to watch it.

What I like is how three-dimensional the moon looks during an eclipse.

I took this as a pre-eclipse trial run, but it was obvious the digi-cam wasn't going to win me a Pulitzer tonight. It's the clouds that make it cool:

Here's my picture of the lunar eclipse, but maybe it belongs on the halloween thread?

It was made with a vintage camera so the resolution isn't that great... ;)
