Roots of anti-americanism.

This was supposedly taken out of an American geography schoolbook called "Introduction to geography", by David Norman :

Do I need to comment ?

I still can't believe this is real though, for there is no such thing as FINRAF... But it shows where it all starts.

This looks like a hoax.

"...vast number of species of all types of animals and vegetals..."

"The value of this area is unable to calculate."

"...possession of these valuable lands to such primitive countries and people..."

It scans like badly-translated Japanese, and it's full of value judgments. Perhaps it's from Vol. 1 of the Ku Klux Klan Encyclopedia for Right-Thinking Youngsters. If this is what's passing for a textbook in a US school, there will be swoons and breast-beating and rhetoric and table-pounding. It reminds me of the textbook-review process related by Feynman.

I don't think it's supposed to be a country persay, just a poor image. It just is overlaid on a political national boundary map.

If you bang around on that server (in Brazil, based on the domain name) you can dig up a bunch of Photoshopped images, including the famous Tourist guy....who is also rumored to be from Brazil. I think the image is satire.

maybe users of the internet should be required to have a license that is only obtained when they demonstrate the ability to identify bias, debunk bullshit, kill spam, deflect flames, and invent a perpetual motion machine.

Tourist Guy turns out to be Hungarian. Apparently he created the original photoshop image and sent it to a few friends as a joke.

I do believe that the internet culture is slowly coming of age, when it creates its own artifacts like that.

Do we have any info on the veracity of the CNN image?

Err... Hum... That's my computer at the university. ;-)

I use it to host the images I post here.

But yeah, I don't think the image it's real either.
