10/13/2004: Massive fish death in India

And you thought you had a bad job. This guy is collecting dead fish out of Kankaria Lake in Ahmedabad, western India. What happened?

Image

Pollution. But not the usual sort. They say "the ritual immersion of Hindu Ganesha elephant deity idols made from plaster of paris and chemical dyes contaminated the water during a recent festival."
Troubleshooter • Oct 13, 2004 12:40 pm
And the next question is how many people are going to die from eating such an easily harvested batch of poisoned fish.
Cyber Wolf • Oct 13, 2004 12:52 pm
Ooooh the smell...the smell!! :greenface
Kitsune • Oct 13, 2004 1:45 pm
Wait -- why are people collecting these fish? I hope they don't plan on eating them.

You've never smelled a fish lorry driving by in Vizag during July. There are worse fish than poisoned ones. :vomit:

Ganesh is the Hindu god who removes obstacles. Perhaps these fish were interfering with something...
xoxoxoBruce • Oct 13, 2004 7:30 pm
The top picture was published in the Washington Post with the following caption.
Oct. 12: A worker collects fish killed by a lack of oxygen in Kankaria Lake in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad.

Water needs to be oxygenated for fish to survive. If some chemical binds to and removes the oxygen, the fish will die.
Kitsune • Oct 13, 2004 10:34 pm
If some chemical binds to and removes the oxygen, the fish will die.

Oh, no! There must have been a hydrogen spill!

Hmm... I guess you can accurately say, "These fish drowned."

You can't leave that many dead fish laying out in the water, they'll end up killing off even more animals.
wolf • Oct 13, 2004 11:34 pm
I know I'm a narrow minded, boorish American, but ... wouldn't that be easier with a couple boats and a net?

Shifting all those fish with small baskets is like digging a hole in a mountainside with a pair of nail clippers.
Elspode • Oct 13, 2004 11:40 pm
Ah, I see you are familiar with Indian tunnel-boring technologies.
Eric • Oct 14, 2004 12:23 pm
So maney dead fish! In my homeland, people thrown the poisonous pills into the river to get the fish.so i have seen this scene before.
Trilby • Oct 14, 2004 12:30 pm
throwing poisonous pills in the river to "catch" the fish doesn't seem very sporting, does it?
Kitsune • Oct 14, 2004 12:38 pm
Preferred fishing method:

Elspode • Oct 14, 2004 1:58 pm
Doesn't sound like it would make them much good for consumption, either.
wolf • Oct 14, 2004 2:14 pm
I hear it's a lot better, actually. They're dead before they know what hit them, no fear poisons released into the flesh ... more humane too, no struggling against the hook and all that.

Of course, you end up with extra.

Boudreaux & the Game Warden Go Fishing

This Louisiana game warden had been keeping an eye on the fishing docks, when after about a week he noticed that Boudreaux had been coming back every day with a boat full of fish. One day he starts to talk to Boudreaux as he's pulling his boat in. The warden says,'Boudreaux, I been watchin you. I notice every day dat you been comin' in wid a full load of fish. You must be havin some good luck? Eh?" Boudreaux answers, "May yah, dem fish is easy to catch." The game warden replies, "Well listen. I got me a day off comin next Saturday. I was wondring, maybe I could go an fish wid you?" Boudreaux replies, "May dat be no problem. Jus make shore you be here at dat 6 a.m. sharp. Cause I gonna leave dis dock wid or widout you." "May I'll be here, don't chu worry none about dat" answers the warden.
Saturday comes and the game warden is waiting at the dock when Boudreaux pulls up and puts his boat in the water. The game warden gets in and Boudreaux proceeds to drive the boat out to the middle of the lake. At this point, Boudreaux shuts off the engine and lets the boat glide to a stop. The game warden, who'd been curious anyway, says to Boudreaux, "May Boudreaux, I been lookin aroun dis boat, and I notice dat all you don brought was dis here ice-chest and dat little brown paper bag under your seat. May, you don't even got no fishin pole." Boudreaux answers, "May, dat be because dats all I need" And he proceeds to pull a stick of dynamite out of the brown paper bag, lights it, thows it in the water and watches it go boooom! All the fish in the area, being stunned, float to the top of the water.

The warden, by this time, can't believe his eyes. Half yelling, he says to Boudreaux, "May Boudreaux, I know we been knowin each udder for a long time, but man, you can't be doing dat, especially wid me being a game warden n all. May, dat's agin de law in a big way dat is." Boudreaux, without say a word, calmly reaches down into the bag (with the warden still rattling off), pulls out a stick, lights it, hands it to the warden and says, "You gonna talk, or you gonna fish?"

I'm guessing Elspode was referring to the poison pill, rather than the TNT....
Elspode • Oct 14, 2004 2:39 pm
Yes, I was...but strangely, I considered telling the exact same joke that Buster did, but decided everyone had probably already heard it.

yes, it does. peopel remove fishs' viscera as fast as they can, so they not fear the poison release into the fish. it is still good for consumption.
This action always means fatal destruction for fish. fortunately, it has been forbided by the local government
Kitsune • Oct 14, 2004 11:15 pm
Mmm... "Poison, poison, poison, tasty fish!"
xoxoxoBruce • Oct 15, 2004 9:00 pm

That's a good idea in that the poison kills much more than the fish you want.
BTW- welcome to the Cellar, Eric. :)

If the people know what the fishes died from, they will be told if they are good for consumption or not....i hope! Otherwise they will see it as a great oppurtunity to get those fishsticks!

"Eric The Red" was a Viking explorer. He discovered Iceland or Greenland. I forget which. Maybe he found both. His son reached America centuries before Columbus.

As I often tell my wife, Eric the Red also knows rain - "Eric the red knows rain, dear"

yeah, i know rain too.I can forecast the weather if it will be rain or not by observeing the cloud move direction.it sounds i am as great as Eric the red, doesn't it? If you want to get the skill as me, i give you 4 key points:
if the sky get black and dusk, you need pay attentiong to it:
1.the cloud towards the North, it will be sunny soon.
2.the cloud towards the East, it will be non-rain.
3.the cloud towards the South, it will be heavy rain.
4.the cloud towards the west, it will be slight rain.
Ps: maybe, there is some different between china and usa.

Lemme check my Farmers' Almanac and get back to you!
Eric • Oct 22, 2004 2:32 am
Brianr, do u have the farmer's almanac?? or are u a farmer?
Brown Thrasher • Oct 22, 2004 1:23 pm
I wonder how many showers it took to get the stench off that poor fellow. Damn where's the soap.........
BrianR • Oct 22, 2004 3:07 pm
Yes, Eric. I do have a copy of the Farmers' Almanac. I buy one every year. No, I am not a farmer. To the contrary, I manage to kill every plant I come across. I buy it for the predictions, homespun wisdom and silly advertisements. All in all, not a bad way to waste a few bucks.

Eric, if you want an idea of what is in the "Farmer's Almanac" you can go to their website.

Oooh wow ... checked the long range weather and there's a lunar eclipse slated for Oct 27th!!
Eric • Oct 23, 2004 2:09 am
thx, wolf. u show me a interesting website.I am thinking now if i can observe this lunar eclipse in china.
Brianr, it seem that the farmer's almanac were not used only by the farmer.

Pleae try not to kill all the plants you come across. Some have medicinal and psycological value.
