Patrick Deuel, 42, of Valentine, weighed 1,072 pounds when he was admitted to Avera McKennan Hospital eight weeks ago. Deuel, who is just under 6 feet tall, is on a 1,200 calorie-a-day diet.

He wants to lose at least another 450 pounds or more in the next year and a half to two years. He is being supervised by a team of eight doctors.

"If we hadn't gotten him here, he'd be dead now," said Fred Harris, Deuel's lead doctor.

I've seen this before...didn't we have this guy here already? Or was it elsewhere in the forum?
Pi • Oct 4, 2004 1:43 pm
I think he's sexy. He has really big tits...
lookout123 • Oct 4, 2004 2:17 pm
good for him. but i wonder - did he just wake up one day and realize he was fat? the previous 20 years he felt just fine but he realized one fine morning that he could stand to lose a few lbs?

second thought - subway should sponsor him. he'd be better than jared.

Why 1200 calories a day I wonder? I mean, doesn't that seem excessive?
lookout123 • Oct 4, 2004 3:11 pm
maybe with that amount of mass, he needs that amount to keep him functional without going into shock or something?

You can't just starve the guy. His body will rebel and he won't lose any weight. A nutritionalist gave me the whole story on how this works, and it's complicated (or, was for me :) but no matter how fat you are you need to eat a little something to keep your electrolytes balanced (sodium, potassium, etc.)

Even his eyes are fat.

Yeah. The human body has what is essentially a "famine mode". If you have a sudden, drastic decrease in caloric intake, your body will respond by slowing the metabolism and converting as much as possible to fat (long term calorie and water storage). That's why sudden-starvation diets cause your weight to yo-yo or increase, and rarely cause weight loss. It is best to decrease your calories over a week or two. Then, your metabolism doesn't slow down and you don't create fat reserves.

"Bite" may be an understatement. I think this dude gnaws and eats his nails. Looks like he ate most of his left ear also. [ Is that possible?] That could account for 1/8-1/4 oz. of weight loss right there. He could remove the warts from under his left eye and maybe grab another gram or two. I really like the push-up bra. My feelings about marriage have changed. If this guy can be married, why the hell....... oh well. My humble advice : gain another 326 lbs. Win the world record. Take the fame & fortune and consider major lyposuction. Observation: I bet she (his wife) likes it on top. Please forgive me. You gotta love this guy............................................................

I think I may be speechless, either that or I am having a vicarious heart attack. This really really belongs on the what the fuck thread.

If we didn't get him to the hospital he'd be melding with his couch...

Maybe last months couch thing got to him and he decided to lose weight. Aww hell, I'll read "the full story"

OK, I'm back from the full story. There was a banner ad for red lobster at the top of the page.

I think I should throw my computer in a river. What the hell is going on?

Quote from The Full Story: "His body was just so sick, he was just hanging on by his fingernails."

I repeat....he bites his nails. So what was he really hanging on by?

the whole eye mole thing grossed me out bad.

YAY!! I think that is WONDERFUL! Good for him! I hope he sticks with it and enjoys the life awaiting him. It takes courage to change.

Or, you know, an ambulance forcibly taking you from your home and putting you in a hospital you're not capable of walking out of... :)

I know, but still. You have to encourage people.

I agree--it would have been pretty easy for this guy to give up. At least he asked for help, and he's getting better.

And welcome back Ms. Brianna! We missed ya! :D
Beestie • Jan 24, 2005 12:51 pm
Geez, that guy has almost lost three of me!

I wonder where it all went? Never mind: don't answer that.
