With the exception of the eyelashes long enough to blind a person, I like these images.

They're much better than this year's Athens Olympic mascots *shudder*
Clodfobble • Sep 20, 2004 10:55 am
Dude, why does Athena have crosshairs over her boobs??
smoothmoniker • Sep 20, 2004 11:27 am
this may seem like a rude comment, but the drawings of these chinese athletes look very, well, caucasian.

Is it just me?

Watch some anime and then ask the question again.

That only leads to additional questions:

- Why does anime feature caucasian-esque eyes?

- Are Chinese illustrators influenced by Japanese illustrators?
Happy Monkey • Sep 20, 2004 12:19 pm
One odd thing I've occasionally noticed in anime is that Chinese and older Japanese characters have the narrower eyes, while American and younger Japanese characters have the wide eyes.

By that do you mean the eyes generally being brown? Brown eyes are pretty common in Asian folks. Or by the shape? Looks to me there's a notion of a slant on the outside of the eyeshape when the eye is open.

You bet and the other way around too. Also, the anime style is the Thing these days. We can only wait and see what'll emerge by 2008.

There's also the style issue. There's lots of styles within the anime genre. You're going to see more of what you mentioned in some anime, especially ones that feature partially or fully super-deformed characters, but not at all in others.

Half don't have a mouth. Is that anime style?

Not at all. Charles Shultz would do that with his Peanuts characters. I forget the cartoonist's name but the guy who did Heathcliff the Cat did that. That's not particular of any style, I'd say.
