Anyone want a Gmail invite?

jane_says • Aug 29, 2004 8:38 pm
Anyone want a Gmail (Google email) account? I have been a beta tester for them and occasionally get invite to give away. I have 6 right now, and Gmail is not yest open to the public. In the interest of fair representation, there have been some security questions about Gmail, but don't know how they were answered. I can tell you that I've never had any trouble. I've been using them since 2 weeks after the first accounts were opened.
I have a thread on the other message board I frequent. I will give the first 6 people who email me at eramsey@gmail.com an invite - anyonw ho would like to have an account may message me. I may also be able to weasel another 1 or 2 invites out of my old man.
Dagney • Aug 29, 2004 11:29 pm
I've got a few to spare as well if anyone wants one.

me please
jane_says • Aug 30, 2004 8:29 am
Two down, four left.
For those who may not know, the accounts come with 1000 MB of storage. For me that's the biggest advantage.
BornAZombie • Aug 30, 2004 11:46 am
thank you jane_says

now i have 6 invites

:)
Radar • Aug 30, 2004 12:05 pm
I've got 4 invites left
Undertoad • Aug 30, 2004 12:27 pm
I've got 6 new ones too. Looks like this marketing scheme/beta test/etc. has been a whopping success!
BornAZombie • Aug 30, 2004 12:51 pm
ah social connections. its like the salem witch hunts.

4 left
jane_says • Aug 30, 2004 7:57 pm
If you've emailed me or asked for one here and didn't get it, let me know. I now have five to give.
Albamoss • Aug 30, 2004 10:45 pm
I've got plenty (six) as well. Are they testing the system for large amounts of people or what?
jane_says • Aug 30, 2004 11:29 pm
No, I think it's pretty close to being offered to the public. Initially only a few accounts were offered, then after each account has been open for a time, that person gets several invites to give away. There are exponentionally more active accounts than there were a few months ago. This is my second batch of them. I think they're giving away a number of invites with each new account now.

Comcast gives me 1.75GB of email storage and 175MB of personal storage. :)
jane_says • Aug 31, 2004 8:16 am
Before we moved back in the spring, we had Comcast; now we have Charter. :P

And you're welcome, BaZ.

So any of those accounts left up for grabs? Anyone? Beuller?
jane_says • Sep 1, 2004 8:04 am
I got, if you want to mail me.
Cyber Wolf • Sep 1, 2004 8:14 am
I'll nab one if there's any left to be nabbed. I got one back in July but the link didn't work. Figured out why but by then the link had expired.
jane_says • Sep 1, 2004 4:56 pm
Mail me, and I'll shoot you off an invite. I tried to do it using your email link but I have to be in my gmail to send the invite.
smoothmoniker • Sep 1, 2004 5:28 pm

I've got about 6 invites myself
alphageek31337 • Sep 28, 2004 6:43 pm
Other than the storage space, what's the big deal about GMail that makes everyone so excited to get and give invites? Is there something I'm missing, or is it simply a badge of net.honor to have a GMail account (rather similar to "@ parties" of the early 90s, where you could only get in if you had a verifiable email address).
Happy Monkey • Sep 28, 2004 7:28 pm
The space is pretty much it. I'll be able to send the full version of my photos from my gmail account to someone else's without worrying about file size.
Cyber Wolf • Sep 28, 2004 8:45 pm
I just basically want to see for myself what all the fuss is about.
jane_says • Sep 28, 2004 8:55 pm
There's really nothing special about it. I think the main thing is the size. If I'm not mistaken (and I often am), the reason they're releasing the accounts in increments is to keep bugs contained if/when they break out.
glatt • Sep 29, 2004 9:26 am
The other feature besides space is the ability to do a Google search through your own e-mails to find one you are looking for. I can't say if that's something you would value, but I can imagine after a few years, when you have thousands of messages in your in box, if you want to find an old one, the search feature might be nice.
Undertoad • Sep 29, 2004 9:42 am
IMO there are a few other good things about it.

One, it's run by Google, who seems to be the company with the greatest understanding of the net and the forces that make it work. They're less likely to do something stupid to irritate and annoy you.

Two, I've seen not one spam message in six weeks of operation.

I'm using mine for commercial contact, and it's doing very well for that.
breakingnews • Sep 29, 2004 1:21 pm
Hmm ... spammers got a hold of my gmail addy about a week ago. I do not, however, get nearly as many spam messages as I did to my Yahoo account when that first got raided. And google's spam filter is excellent, at least this far into it.

Anyone need invites? I got six ... bidding is now open for cash/sexual favors ...
perth • Sep 29, 2004 1:27 pm
Hmm, if you give me one, I promise to yell "Breaking newwwwwwwwws!" if and when I get laid next.

Ha. I just watched Y Tu Mama Tambian, and I love how the woman makes fun of one of the kids for yelling "mamacita" or whatever when he blows it.

And trust me, I myself will be scrambling to the cellar with a big flashing breaking news alert the next time I get laid ...

PM me your emaily.

Wow, I never thought I could profit from squatting on these invites.

Naw, I'll be fair - take yourself out and buy as much alcohol as possible with $10. Here in NYC I could conceivably buy 10 beers, if I make it to the Gowanus Yacht Club before 7 pm tonight.
kash • Oct 1, 2004 4:41 pm
Sounds like a fair deal :) I think I'll go buy a six pack of some Blue Moon and a 40oz'er, that should be about $10. How do you send the invite to me? My email is in my profile. Thanks!

I read about a website that's matching up people with invites to people who want to be invited. Go to: http://isnoop.net/gmailomatic.php?PHPSESSID=8afacc2d5612050b53391c7ce3e3fcc3
or click here: Isnoop.net Gmail invite spooler

If you have extra invites, you can send them to the spooler, if you want an invite you can sign up at the spooler. Or keep coming here. Whatever.

"People with available invites send them to the spooler's address (gmail@isnoop.net), and it automatically adds them to an available pool. People who need addresses can then get invites from this pool, as necessary.

"It's a good place to dump those excess invites, and anybody who needs a GMail invite can pick one up there, easily. Saves time for everybody, really."

I'd like an invite, but those things are super hard to get!
Clodfobble • Oct 7, 2004 10:51 pm
What are you, Vindwyn, retarded? Look at the post right above yours.

[Sorry everyone. It's been a long ass week. I'm tired of people.]
Vindwyn • Oct 7, 2004 11:08 pm
I've been spending ages trying to scores one of those invites. Did it ever cross your mind that I might also have PMed Jinx as well as posted?

Ooooh...there's a thought.

Let's see...am I retarded....hmmmm...difficult question. I'm graduating with a Master of Science degree this December...and I have a 4.0 GPA in my program. No...I guess I'm not retarded.

Do you know what it means to be retarded? Maybe you should ask someone with a real disability. People say stuff like that all the time, but it's not a laughing matter.

Vindwyn

[Sorry, but I can't abide jerks.]

You'll do well here.

Welcome to The Cellar.
Clodfobble • Oct 8, 2004 8:59 am
Vindwyn, I'm sorry I called you retarded. I had the impression you were one of the many people who only registers here for one of two reasons--to get a Gmail invite, or to post in the thisisnotporn.com thread. Since this is a community and not your typical web messageboard, both these groups of people are dreadfully annoying. I have since seen posts of yours in other threads, and realize my error. I apologize.
Vindwyn • Oct 8, 2004 10:04 am
You're forgiven. :)
jinx • Oct 8, 2004 10:22 am
Ok, I think I got to everyone that asked - and now I'm all out of invites.
Vindwyn • Oct 8, 2004 2:13 pm

I know what a retard is,I read the (now defunct) Tardblog! Mirror site is http://fullduplex.org/tardblog/

I'm not excessively PC! I guess it comes from working with the disabled. The word retarded is just sad.

Clodfobble has a point. That thisisnotporn thread needs a serious threadjacking. Help us ThreadHijackMan, you're our only hope!

The've had over 14,000 views in a little over a month. That's amazing. It's almost twice as many as the "I need Humor" thread which has been going on continuously for 9 months.
Undertoad • Oct 8, 2004 6:48 pm
Now that the alleged thisisnotporn creator has shown up I feel better about the whole thing. It gives it some sort of legitimacy.

Vindwyn wrote:

No it's not, it's a perfectly good word. What is sad is the images it brings to mind for anyone who has worked with or even contacted retarded kids. Also the reaction of much of the public to those same kids.

It's not the word, it's never the word, or the dictionary definition of the word. It's always the baggage we pile on the word in our minds.

The same thing with the word homosexual. The queers piled so much baggage on it, they felt they had to appropriate gay. (That pisses me off because that was a wonderful word that I haven't found a replacement for.)

Anyway, don't blame the words for the feelings you internalize, or feel others internalize, when you hear it. Changeing words won't change peoples perception, and that's what has to be done :)
Vindwyn • Oct 10, 2004 10:50 pm
I have one GMAIL invite that someone gave me after I had already received mine. Would anyone like it? If so, send me a PM with your e-mail address.

Hi Everyone,

I've never posted on a forum before so go easy.

I too am 'almost desperate' for gmail, i would really appreciate an invite if anyone has one spare
I've been looking for a gmail invite for days, I've tried the gmail invite spooler but keep getting expired links. anyone got any other suggestions?
Undertoad • Nov 8, 2004 4:50 pm
We're page 9 on Google for "gmail invite" so my question is why here instead of one of the forums on pages 1-8?

First two who answer that will get a gmail invite.
robbird • Nov 8, 2004 5:34 pm
looked through alot of 1-8 :)
but far too many people begging and not enough invites, I was looking for advice on how to get one on the web (ie. more sites like the isnoop spooler), but then you lot looked like kind poeple who actually had invites to send

Thankyou for the invite. Can't wait till i can start using my new gmail account!

Although i am starting to wonder if fate is against me on this one, as i just went to the gmail invite you sent and found that too many robert bird's exist in this world and nothing remotely similar to my name is available - oh well.
So i eventually decided on another name and now the service is apparently down - DOH

When i do eventually get there, if i get any invites i will be sure to post some back here. Thanks again!

hi, i've been following gmail for quite some time now. is it really as good as people claim it is? or are people just happy for 1 GB of space for junk mail? i've used many email servers over the decades- hotmail, yahoo, aol, prodigy, juno, ureach, onebox, and many more. more space has its merits but there is no substitution for quality of service. if anyone has any spare gmail invites, i'd like one to see for myself how gmail stacks up to all the others.
thanks,
