8/18/2004: Baby rhino suffers broken leg

Fresh off the cute baby rhino pic from the other day comes this one. It's not the same rhino, but this one's about the same age at this point. But it's not allowed in with its momma any more after momma stepped on its leg and broke it!

You'd think nature would take a bit more care.

There is a reason that rhinos are not overrunning the plains of Africa like the buffalo once did in America.

Crushing stupidity.

I often wonder, though, if the thing about fire is true or not.

You mean about rhino's feeling compelled to stamp out any fire they see? I saw that on the SIMPSON'S!
wolf • Aug 18, 2004 9:52 am
I saw it on The Gods Must Be Crazy.
AlphaRaptor • Aug 18, 2004 11:44 am
It looks more like a baby armadillo. Now that's a cast!

There are quite a number of legends about the rhinoceros stamping out fire. The story seems to have been common in Malaysia and Burma.

This type of rhinoceros even had a special name in Malay, 'badak api', where badak means rhinoceros and api means fire. The animal would come when a fire is lit in the forest and stamp it out.

If there is or can be any truth in the legend, it would be hard to decide. Suffice it to say that there has been no sighting of this phenomenon in recent history.

Of course, the rhinoceros in South East Asia has become very rare is hardly ever met nowadays, as it keeps to the deep forest and high mountains.

Poor little thing, I was just last night watching a few documentaries on the channels on Foxtel Animal Planet, Discovery & National Geographic, they had a few documentaries on Rhino's. It really is sad to watch what is happening to them in countries around Indonesia/Asia and indeed Africa. Not only are they endangered but most of the animals that inhabit their countries are also endangered. The people who dedicate their lives to increase their numbers are absolutely wonderful people, my hat goes off to each and every one of them. If only human kind would stop destroying everything in sight. :earth:

Well, if rhinos do put out fires, they should follow rabbits around. Little pyro buggers (see here for explanation).

Bunnies aren't just cute like everybody supposes.
They got them hoppy legs and twitchy little noses.
And what's with all the carrots?
What do they need such good eyesight for, anyway?

Bunnies! Bunnies! It must be bunnies!

In related news, Shanti, a 13-year-old Asian elephant at the Houston Zoo gave birth last night to a 338-pound girl, yet to be named. I was a 22-month gestation period and and 18-hour labor. Ouch!

i know it's sad... but I think that the cast is really cute! I'm a sucker for baby animals.

NBN, I think they should name Shanti's baby, Outhouse. :)

Given that the mother is only 13, I'm leaning towards 'Statutory Rape'.

Bullshit. You think Sarah Michelle Geller is hot, and the whole lesbian thing with Willow turned you on. Admit it!
Happy Monkey • Aug 20, 2004 9:14 am
Meh. Gellar is OK. I liked Willow the whole time, pre and post lesbian.

Researching the subject or the rhino as a self appoited fire marshall I came across this thread...Stonan...you should have included the source of your post:
http://www.sosrhino.org/knowledge/faq.php
its word for word from the answer to their question,
Q: Do rhinos really stomp out fires?

Of course SOS Rhino's piece is almost word for word from Wikipedia,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhinoceros,
see the section on legends.

And Google keeps a very close eye on the Cellar. They must update from here every couple of days. July 10th stuff is in there.

Kind of eerie when you think of it.

speaking of eerie...

Google spiders are here all the time. They even check old threads for changes.

Rhinos do stomp/stamp out fires, if the comments are correct in the IsItAHoax.com article, "Do Rhino’s stamp out campfires?" (August 27, 2008) Corrected link.
