don't anchor under a bridge.

this is absolutely disgusting. i've seen some pretty gross things in my life, but i can't think of too many more disgusting things to endure.

Oh, Sh*t!!!

the question is... can all cellarites account for their whereabouts at the time of the incident?
xoxoxoBruce • Aug 9, 2004 4:18 pm
I can. No shit!
Damn, we lost our angel smilie. :)

When those folks signed up for the Tour, I'm sure they weren't expecting a possible tour of the emergency unit of the local hospital too. I wonder how it would spill from a tourbus anyhow...granted, they have sewage tanks for the bathrooms but the tank would've had to rupture or leak, yes? And someone streetside might have noticed...I mean really, there's no way to NOT notice the smell...:turd:

If it came from two tour busses, it wasn't an accident. One maybe, but not two. The busses were illegally dumping the raw sewage in the river to get around disposing of it proprerly and legally. It has probably been going on for quite some time and may be common practice for busses in the area.

My question is how are the busses doing it? I always assumed you needed to get outside the bus to empty the john. If they are doing it on the fly, they must have it rigged somehow from the driver's seat.
Undertoad • Aug 10, 2004 9:07 am
And how could it get over the edge of the bridge? I've never seen any bus taking a mid-trip leak like this. It's just weird.

Wait a minute, it could have been one of those metal mesh deals where you can see right through the bridge. I remember those being in Chicago.

"Drain Master is a fully automatic 12-volt-DC RV waste valve that eliminates the need to reach into awkward or hard-to-reach places to empty the holding tanks...and can be operated from more than one location."

Drain Master

--

This is an image of the kinzie street bridge.

It appears to be grating, as you said.

(For the drain master link, it's the last product on that page)

Good research job!

So the bus drivers flip a switch as they slow down and drive over the bridge. Bastards.
Carbonated_Brains • Aug 10, 2004 12:36 pm
The good (and revolting) news is that the bridge grating probably filtered out any turds that would have otherwise have fallen onto the boat.
Cyber Wolf • Aug 10, 2004 12:41 pm
And the subsequent traffic would promptly disintigrate them...
Carbonated_Brains • Aug 10, 2004 12:58 pm
...thus cementing any kinks or holes! You're stumbled on something brilliant!
lookout123 • Aug 10, 2004 3:40 pm
i haven't verified the accuracy yet, but i heard on the radio that it was a dave matthews tour bus that jettisoned the flotsam.

*spla-ash, no i mean craaaaaaaash into me*

I think they took the Fark headline on this one as gospel. The story didn't say DMB.
Pi • Aug 14, 2004 12:20 pm
Where's the photo of the boat and the people just coming out under the bridge? Come on folks, I know you can find one!
Cyber Wolf • Aug 25, 2004 7:14 am
Alrighty, more info on this:
Turns out it was a Dave Matthews Band bus that dumped up to 800 pounds of liquid dookie onto the river and the tour boat. I just heard that this morning from WTOP news. Gives the lyrics "don't drink the water" a special meaning, doesn't it?
Undertoad • Aug 25, 2004 8:47 am
Read three posts up from yours. But yeah, it turns out to be the case!
Cyber Wolf • Aug 25, 2004 9:02 am
Oh yah, I forgot that was up there. Been a while. Ah well, we got a link out of it anyway!

time for an update. the illinois attorney general says that it was the the DMB bus that "dumped" on the boaters.

Video on the same topic.

and the story continues. DMB is providing DNA samples so they can identify who the waste belonged to. um, yuck.

DMB poop

OK, let's say you are Dave Matthews. How would you handle this? I assume the bus driver is swearing up and down that he didn't do it. Do you stick with your bus driver and deny deny deny? It's obviously not about the money. The fines are only $70,000, which is really very little to the band. The bad publicity is going to go on and on the longer they stretch this out. The only reason to stretch it out is if they really think they are innocent.

If there was any doubt, or if they thought they were probably responsible, I would imagine they would just cough up the $70,000. Hold a press conference apologizing for the incident, and blame the bus company that gave them the driver.

It's an interesting public relations question.

I actually have more respect for the Dave Matthews Band for fighting this. They are sticking up for the driver, who is probably a friend at this point. The only way they lose is if the DNA proves it was them. Then I suppose they could do the apology, etc.

It was on Chicago radio yesterday morning that the Dave Matthews driver was to be charged.
dar512 • May 3, 2005 5:42 pm
The Dave Matthews band have class:

"Although the band members were not on the bus when the incident took place, we have always said that if it was our bus we would take responsibility for what happened," the spokesperson said. "That is exactly what we're doing today."

Full story here .
Beestie • May 3, 2005 7:23 pm
So no band members were on the bus? That means it wasn't even rock star crap - it was roadie crap.
xoxoxoBruce • May 3, 2005 8:52 pm
has agreed to pay $200,000 to an environmental fund and take measures to avoid a repeat of the incident

The band had already donated $50,000 to Friends of the Chicago River and $50,000 to the Chicago Park District.
Now they have taken responsibility they face several personal-injury lawsuits. Plus the lawyers and costs. Shows what an employee can cost the boss with a stupid move. Guess they should have shared the groupies with him.
