Finally coming out into the light

LabRat • Jun 25, 2004 9:37 am
Hi all, I wanted to introduce myself. I have been a lurker since I came back from maternity leave and found you guys (my daughter's 19m old). So I've been around awhile. Finally feel comfortable enough to step out and try to post my opinions for discussion since there haven't been any assholes around lately :). Since having a baby and evaluating my life, I realized I am way too ignorant about government and politics in general. That's how I came upon the cellar, in my search for information.
I have already learned a lot just by observing all of you (scientist in me) but surely will get a lot more out of actually participating.
You are a unique group of people, I hope I can contribute another view on the topics at hand.

PS. the image of the day ROCKS. Thanks UT!
perth • Jun 25, 2004 10:10 am
What's this "no assholes" stuff? I can think of a couple off the top of my head. :D

Welcome, LabRat. Congratulations on your little girl.
Griff • Jun 25, 2004 10:16 am
Welcome! What kinda science?

Well don't expect to learn anything from this bunch of halfwits. Except maybe lumberjim - he's occasionally wise.

Welcome LabRat ;)

Welcome, LabRat.

You have started off on the right foot. I don't see any photoshop threads at your expense in the future. Unlike that Rich fella.

Welcome labrat - the assholes are just part of the fun - take rich for example.

And yes, UT is the total package. [/suck up] :)

edit: Note to self - when taking 13 minutes to compose a lousy two-line post, hit reload before posting to make sure someone else (glatt in this case) didn't do a better job with the same idea :)

for the record, i am not an english major, so i am asking for leaniency in judging the intellegence of the person behind the posts...

i feel an imminent sense of future history here. I think that this thread will be an historic, record setting thread. Anyone who is anyone will post to this thread. It will serve as a decloaking station for the lurkers. An auspicious honor for LabRat. Her very first thread, an instant classic. Future Cellarites of Note will have their starts here. People that didn't just register on a whim, post once, and move on. A place where our ambassador, xoxoxobruce can welcome the unlurked.

And let me just say that for the record, and i've said it before:
Lurkers make me nervous.

So, if you've been reading the cellar but never posted, I encourage you to at least register and say hi one time. you won't get any spam from it, or VD, or hatemail, or Gangrene, or anything. And you'll be freaking me out a lot less. Thanksafuckinglot.
Catwoman • Jun 25, 2004 11:59 am
Welcome Redrago....

God it's like an AA meeting. Come on all you still-silent lurkers, fess-up while the ball's rolling. Come on, we know who you are anyway, we keep special tabs on these things. Heh he he he he he he he....

:joint:
Catwoman • Jun 25, 2004 12:00 pm
Great minds...
lumberjim • Jun 25, 2004 12:04 pm

LabRat • Jun 25, 2004 12:29 pm
i'm the RA/Lab manager #1 is my boss, #2 is me (my hair is a lot longer now, and i've lost a lot of my babyfat) and the rest are grad students or undergrads that are working in our lab.
jaguar • Jun 25, 2004 12:36 pm
You don't want to draw up that mess.
Oh an LJ, youre an asshole.

While I can follow a teenytiny amount of what the about page does, can you give us an english summary of the research you guys are doing? From what I can gather, what happens to the CNS post injury and how it may be possible to repair it?

So, if you've been reading the cellar but never posted, I encourage you to at least register and say hi one time. you won't get any spam from it, or VD, or hatemail,
Well....

I got no problem with lurkers... I'm dating one
Beestie • Jun 25, 2004 12:41 pm
Hey, labrat - cool movies! I'd like to see one of those things square off against THIS thing in a winner-take-all cage match:
LabRat • Jun 25, 2004 12:58 pm
basically we are interested in 1) how microglia react to injury, b/c many studies have implicated them in creating secondary damage above and beyond an itintial injury or aggravating damage caused by disease (MS, alzheimer etc) If we can figure our how they activate, we can then try to counteract this activation so extra damage is kept to a minimum. 2) synaptogenesis: the guys are working on just exactly how two neurons without eyes or a map can find each other, decide they are good partners and create a synapse. specifically exactly HOW that synapse is created, what molecules show up first, then next etc. 3) astrocytes were thought to just be feeders and scaffolding for neurons, but recent research is pointing to a MUCH more active role in neuronal signalling, and one of the studs is looking at astrocyte morphology( shape) changes in different areas of the hippocampus thruout development. their shape is thought to relate to their function.

because i actually never had a neuroscience course during my BA or MS, everything i have learned about the brain i have learned here. I was hired b/c i got mad skills with microscissors and a scope
jaguar • Jun 25, 2004 1:18 pm
I understand the simplified cause of MS (in a neuroscience for dummies kind of way) is the nervous system attacking itself, cause unknown but expected to be some kind of genetic timebomb. i didn't know there was a similar scenario with damage as well. I also wasn't aware of a link to altzhimers, can you explain that a little further?

A synapse is the way two neurons interact by releasing certain chemicals between each other to act as a conduit for the electricial signals that go through neurons right?

Lost me completely on number 3. That must've been a real toss in the deep end, that's a lot of terminology and theroy to learn damn fast. I have a friend at oxford who does protien crystolography work, is that in any way similar? Some of the terms sound familiar from him talking about his work.

As you can no doubt tell, I'm faily thick when it comes to this stuff but it's facinating to talk to people on the 'front lines' so to speak.

You know the Lion Tamer, Aerialists and Clowns do the performing, but the crowds (lurkers) make the circus what it is. So welcome to you, also.

i can spell just fine. it's typing I have trouble with.

and you're damn right i double checked it on dictionary.com before i corrected you, Rat. I just couldn't resist the irony, and it was an opportunity to see if LabRat had a sense of humor.
marichiko • Jun 25, 2004 11:35 pm
Welcome, LabRat! Will you tell my hippocamus a bedtime story? Seriously, the damn thing has been giving me endless problems every since an episode of CO poisoning. Would love to hear a professional take on that. You can PM me (or not). Welcome aboard!:)

That’s right, Jim. There are people that know all about you, your name, what you do, where you live and work, your family, your past, your vices, because you’ve told them. You’ve laid it all out for them. Some might even know you in person. They might live or work within spitting distance. Their kids might know your kids. They might be ex-deadheads.
And there are hundreds,.....no thousands,.....maybe millions of them.
Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
:worried:

I didn't go on and on about it, I merely answered a question.

I don't have a pic scanned in (or a scanner), but I could describe what I look like if it's really bothering you. But taking note of H-Boy's diatribe on this board's disintigration into chatroom drivel maybe you should pm me and I'll tell you all about me... ;)

Lol.

Heh heh.

Me too.

Labrat - you look a lot like Kirsten Dunst.
LabRat • Jun 28, 2004 1:35 pm
sorry it's taken so long to get back, I only get to use the net at work, don't have it at home. i'll take the Kirsten D comment as a compliment, thanks! :D never been told that before.
