Desktop Demographics

Ok, I've noticed certain trends in the desktops of the computers of people that I've worked with/for/etc.

I'm curious about your desktops.

You show me yours and I'll show you mine.
lumberjim • Jun 8, 2004 10:22 am
uh......I have a few more icons on my desktop than you
Dagney • Jun 8, 2004 10:22 am
My home one is MUCH more cluttered..

Well, it was until I cleaned it up this evening.....see later in the thread *G*

I cut down the desktop icons when they bust into the Firefox text. I just think that the guy who did the Firefox iconography is brilliant. It makes me want to evangelize about it to myself. And so I do.
Kitsune • Jun 8, 2004 10:39 am
Woo! Other firefox users! Yay!

Firefox makes me happy, as does the graphic. I mean, come on, a fast-rendering browser with tabs and no pop-ups? And it has a cool mascot? I was sold at the "fox" part. Sweet.

Full size here, if you're interested. I run 1600x1200 at work, and I'll post my home desktop which is slightly more interesting, tonight.

Shutup -- being lefthanded doesn't mean anything.

...but the taskbar on the side means you are at least bi-curious.

lol...i think being ambidextrous lends to that probablitiy as well....
and now for the deciding question...perth, can you whistle?
Kitsune • Jun 8, 2004 11:08 am
lol...i think being ambidextrous lends to that probablitiy as well....

I'm not saying anything about a certain OS or anything, but the closer that taskbar is to the top the closer you are to, uh, "being on the bottom".

You lost me on that one, but I'm a glutton for punishment, so I'll answer anyway. No, I cannot whistle.

(Insert comment about ambidexterity indicating amazing bedroom prowess here)
lumberjim • Jun 8, 2004 11:17 am
ow. i was afraid you'd say that. Out of respect for you, my friend, I will hold my tongue.

actually, on second thought.....no......yes. well.......nevermind. party on perth!

Oh, come on. I can take it. Hit me.
Clodfobble • Jun 8, 2004 11:28 am
If someone'll tell me how to take a screenshot, I'll do it...
Beestie • Jun 8, 2004 11:28 am
Mine at work...

I run Drempels which is like an acid-trip on your desktop (its an animated wallpaper). But, for some reason, Drempels will not show up on a screen shot so I disabled it to show my underlying wallpaper - the Sombrero Galaxy.

Also, I disabled icons on the desktop and use the tool tray next to the start button to keep the handy stuff.

lumberjim • Jun 8, 2004 11:30 am
ok, but don't say i didn't warn you. you know i love you like a brother, even though we've never met in person.

that said.....

I have heard numerous times from numerous sources ( although i spent the last 5 minutes searching google and found nothing to substantiate this) that gay people are less likely to be able to whistle. I think I heard it on Leno first. There was something about being able to roll your tongue into a tube, and flip it over, too. probalably bullshit, perth, but with the ambidextrousness, and the left side task bar.......?

*tasteless joke about a touchy subject omitted out of respect

I'd show my SUN Ultra 10 if I could figure out how. I tried tho: I used UNIX' screenshot function, ftp'd it over to the PC side but even Irfan couldn't open it. Any ideas?

Oh, and didja hear the one about the French hos that took up skydiving? :D

Oh geez. I got a good chuckle out of that. I can roll my tongue into a tube, for what it's worth, but not flip it over. Rest assured however, that I really dig chicks. And not guys. Not that there's anything wrong with that. :)

* In your windows machine you will need to install IrfanView. Install both IrfanView and Plugins.
* Then login to solaris environment. At the command prompt, type snapshot
* This will start snapshot program in a new window, which will keep blinking (Really annoying. Who the hell designed it?)
* Click on the tab snap in the snapshot program window.
* Click on the window you want to capture (e.g. the Virtuoso Schematic Editor Window with your schematic inside)
* Click the button save and select the directory where you want to save the image. (Default name of the image is snapshot.rs)
* Now ftp this image-file to your windows machine.
* Rename the file with extension .ras (i.e call the file schematic.ras or something)
* Open this file in IrfanView. You should be able to view this image. (If not, then probably you forgot to install the plugin package of IrfanView)
* Save this file as a bitmap. File -> Save as ---- (select the .bmp format)

shamelessly grabbed off google somewhere.
Clodfobble • Jun 8, 2004 11:50 am
And what would be the file extension in Windows for the stupid SimpleText picture I get with the Mac Screenshot function, Jag?
jaguar • Jun 8, 2004 11:54 am
.pict

most editors should open them, almost certain photoshop does.
Clodfobble • Jun 8, 2004 12:01 pm
Don't have photoshop... but Internet Explorer could open it, and then I just took another screenshot of my Windows machine and cropped it. :)

I notice a lot of pictures that look busy.. The icons are hard to see against the background.

Here's mine. Forgive the numerous icons. THey were put there by my work.

Picture is one I took years ago of the hull of a rusty old shipwreck in Maine.

Yeah, I like a background with a large area of little variation, for example the sky in my shot. I normally line my icons up against the sky, but was doing some desktop cleanup and didn't bother disabling auto-arrange when I was done. The only reason desktop icons are even enabled on my system is because I cannot retrain myself regarding the location of "My Computer". The desktop generally gets treated as a dumping ground for files I'm going to use temporarily and then get rid of.
Clodfobble • Jun 8, 2004 12:34 pm
Jag, the big two are Peak and BarbaBatch. I regularly deal with 50,000+ files at a time, and BarbaBatch is the only reasonable batch processor capable of handling them. And Peak made a new version for OSX, but it's painfully buggy and actually REMOVED several of my favorite features as compared to the previous version.

I have an OSX partition too, you can see the conveniently placed "Startup Disk" icon on the top left so I can switch back and forth whenever I want.
jaguar • Jun 8, 2004 12:35 pm
Some I'm guessing you do pro audio work, mind if I ask what?
Clodfobble • Jun 8, 2004 12:40 pm
Videogame sound. The games that require the massive numbers of files are the sports games, because they have these complex commentary logic trees so the right announcer call can be made depending on what's happening on the field.

So, TS, what's your theory about desktops and do Cellarites uphold or debunk it?

Possibly. I have a whole bunch of pics that I rotate as wallpaper so if I see something interesting, I just toss it in the folder. I think that particular pic came from the Hubble site. My favorite site to grab wallpaper from is 3Dtotal. Next in the que is "diner" from Jason Lee

I actually forgot I submitted that about 7 months ago now, then out of the blue I got an email from them, kind of embarassed of it now but cool at the same time.

Where's that solaris shot beestie?
Undertoad • Jun 8, 2004 1:42 pm
I just want to say that jinx's desktop is a total UI abomination and needs to be shot.

Also, side-docked toolbars are the devil.

That is all
perth • Jun 8, 2004 1:48 pm
Side-docked toolbars own.

Actually, I think I would ideally like to have my Start button at the top-left, but have my applications remain along the bottom. I think it's just a matter of how I think and work. The start button works better for me at the top-left. One could also make the argument that there is more real estate horizontally than vertically, thus a side-docked toolbar on either side is less intrusive. But when you're running at anything above 1024x768 it's kind of a moot point.

Nipple doesn't show in that picture due to the density of the mesh.

To each their own, I guess. I can't understand how people can live with the default Windows setup - background, sounds etc.

If I'm going to staring at the screen for 8 hours a day, I want it to look nice.

How do you define the desktop then? Do I highlight it? Or does the function just go ahead and read my mind (Linux has ceased to surprise me with neato hidden tech).

GIMP is a program I have yet to use, I'll play with it and then try to do a snapshot. Then I will try to figure out the screensaver. It's set to ON but the screen only goes dark. Must be a power saver feature I have enabled somewhere. Or something. Or Linux refuses to display silly screensavers. ;)

Yeah, I got lots of those, but the picture stash is something I'm working with all the time. As you can imagine, going through 12 to 15 a day (everyday), it's a constant process.
I never just sit and look at the desktop, so I don't need a pretty picture, I need it functional.
That's why they put beverages in see through bottles, so you can tell at a glance, where you stand.:)
Slartibartfast • Jun 10, 2004 5:49 pm

Ok, anybody expecting some sort of psychobabble from what I was looking at is going to be disappointed. This was just a demographic survey, not a Fraudian analysis.

From what I've seen of the desktops it seems that the trend I noticed in the homes and PC's of normal people the men seem to have less crap running in the systray and fewer icons on the desktop. The icons that ARE on the desktop are generally shortcuts to programs. The women usually have shit strewn everywhere on their desktop and around 6 to 8 things running in the systray.

Now looking at the desktops here I would say that most of the guys here have some very feminine computer operating habits or they are not normal.

Part of the problem with assessing this is that xp hides your systray now and the mac and linux crowd don't get counted properly because I can only go by their desktop as I don't have enough experience with their interfaces to judge their running programs.

So taken as a whole the women seem to be pretty much on track and most of the guys are gay.
