Desert Island Discs

Crimson Ghost • Jun 8, 2004 7:11 am
This is something Tower Records did, I'm not sure if they still do.

The idea is, if you were stuck on a desert island, what 5 CDs would you want with you? (Hence, the name "Desert Island Discs".)

Double CDs are not allowed.

My Picks:

1. The Misfits - Famous Monsters

2. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Skynyrds Innyrds

3. The Sex Pistols - Live At Chelmsford Top Security Prison

4. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts - Fetish

5. Judas Priest - Rocka Rolla

What are your picks?

*Smiles* this is something that BBC radio 4 has been doing for many years. Of course.....on that show the "disc" refers to records ...Every week a famous person chooses several records and a book ( the bible is already included ) with which to be marooned. As they go through their record choices they talk about why they want that record and the whole thing usually ends up as a really good interview wrapped around a half dozen great pieces of music

I'd have to have "Sara" from the Hurricane album by Bob Dylan....when my ex and I were courting ( age 18) he made me a copy of that album ....what else? hmmm Leftism by leftfield, just picks my mood right up no matter how low I feel.......another one that does that is Porcelain by Moby.....Barber's Addagio for strings and David Bowies Space Oddysey i'd have because both give me shivers for different reasons....hmmm.....and Janice Jopelyn's Take a little piece of my heart.

Oops thats too many......ok cancel of Janis jopelyn I cna bring that to mind without the cd.....

1. The Beatles - Abbey Road
2. Nirvana - Nevermind
3. Crash Test Dummies - God Shuffled His Feet
4. Sarah McLachlan - Fumbling Towards Ecstasy
5. Disc 5, I'm ashamed to admit, is one of those Starbucks compilations they're always hawking, Ciao Amore

This is, I think, a good mix for me. Something for virtually every mood.

lumberjim • Jun 8, 2004 1:22 pm
stickler. which disc do i like better?
jinx • Jun 8, 2004 1:31 pm
Can you break up a set? That would greatly impact my list...
lumberjim • Jun 8, 2004 1:38 pm
ok. take out listener supported and give me under the table dreaming.

i'm not happy about it though.
lumberjim • Jun 8, 2004 1:39 pm
what list?
lookout123 • Jun 8, 2004 2:04 pm
1. The Misfits - Famous Monsters

Crimson Ghost, it is your time on the island, but i think i would have chosen walk among us or eath a.d.

just my opinion.
Crimson Ghost • Jun 8, 2004 5:57 pm
True, lookout123. It was hard to decide, but I took into account that most of the songs on "Famous Monsters" relate to classic horror films, another one of my favorite things.

jinx, I see no reason why a set couldn't be broken up. I did consider that some people would be upset about not picking a double, but I looked at the lists that Tower publishes, and it seems to be all single disc recordings.

perth, compilations are allowed, and some of them are pretty good. I've got one from Hollywood Video that's songs from high school movies, like "Rock Around The Clock", "Schools Out", ect......

DanaC, the reason I picked CDs is that if it was records or tape, a lot of good stuff would not be included, like "The White Album", "Quadrophinia", "The Song Remains The Same", ect.....

But, even on CD, some stuff might not get in, like "The Wall", "Decade Of Aggression" (Slayer), "Double Live Assassins" (W.A.S.P.), "Live After Death" (Iron Maiden), ect......

Maybe my second thread will be "Double Island Discs" if this one goes well...........

My shame comes not from the fact that it's a compilation, but from the fact that it's a Starbucks compilation. :)

I will need lots of extra batteries, or perhaps one of those solar powered CD Players. Oh, and onsite service in case the thing dies, in which case I'll be hanging the CDs from wires to scare birds away from my vegetable garden ...

1. Loreena McKennit - The Mask and the Mirror

2. Laurie Anderson - Big Science (I actually wanted to take United States Live, but because that's a multi-CD set (4 CDs, 4 tapes, 5 LPS ... which is how I originally purchased it) it's been disallowed.

3. Douglas Spotted Eagle - Closer to Far Away

4. Chicago Symphony Orchesta - Carmina Burana (just in case you were looking for a copy of Carmina Burana, this one is the best!!)

5. Glen Gould - Goldberg Variations
wolf • Jun 8, 2004 10:31 pm
Actually, there were quite a few classical music CDs that I would have brought along to the desert island, but the single CD rule axed most of those ideas ...

I've wanted to listen to the whole Ring cycle. At this point I don't even own any of it. I'd need the librettos too. And a German Dictionary. Would that count against my book total?

Books are in another thread.
However, there is nothing in "DID" that prohibits books.
I say, go for it.

As per perth:"My shame comes not from the fact that it's a compilation, but from the fact that it's a Starbucks compilation."
Don't worry. I'm sure it happens even in the best of families.
Elspode • Jun 9, 2004 10:59 pm
Guess I'm screwed then...three of my five are doubles (Lamb, White Album, Quadrophenia)...and I didn't even *realize* it until having read Jinx's post.

How's that for being a total geek?
xoxoxoBruce • Jun 10, 2004 12:17 am
I knew it but I wouldn't rat you out.;)

this is one of those things where I want my answer to be esoteric and cool, and to only mention CDs from bands that stayed togetether for four hours in a closed down bar in London, but somehow managed to change music forever with the 6 song demo they recorded on the broken down karaoke machine in the men's bathroom, and to have everyone go, "Oh man, they were amazing. I didn't think anyone else knew about them - did you know that all four of those guys died in a freak telemarketting accident the morning after they finished that record?"

But my answer isn't nearly that cool. I just really like pop music.

ha ha. But when amongst us real-music-lovers, pop is esoteric.

I believe you're referring to the Chameleons [UK] and their seminal "Strange Times". What an awesome DID.
I just really like pop music

The one started by the Beatles/Beach Boys war, followed by the Raspberries/Badfinger/Big Star second tier? Or the one short for "popular"?

LOL. I was hoping that people would realize that, and maybe be introduced to music they wouldn't otherwise be aware of.

I managed an independant record store for about 3 years, and I was introduced to music from artists I wouldn't have normally heard. Quite a bit of it was good, some of it sucked, but it was an education in music.

I grew up with country & western, then got into punk, heavy metal, and hardcore. Now, I listen to just about everything.

Hopefully, this list will have opened up new music for someone. If it has, enjoy. If it hasn't, try listening to new stuff. You never know. You might find something you like.

Keep listing your discs. You might turn someone on to a favorite of yours.
Griff • Jun 11, 2004 7:53 am
U2 - Under a Blood Red Sky
Stevie Ray Vaughn - Live at Carnegie Hall
David Grisman Quintet - DGQ20 disc 2
The Neville Brothers- Live on Planet Earth
Solas- Sunny Spells and Scattered Showers

Man was that hard, are you sure we can't get streaming audio on this island?
Griff • Apr 3, 2006 8:52 pm
Thing is any self respecting desert island has 5 discs.
wolf • Apr 4, 2006 1:53 am
Interesting.

Reviewing my list not quite two years after posting it, I wouldn't change it.
Beestie • Apr 4, 2006 4:23 pm
Black Sabbath - Sabatoge
Silencers - A Letter from St. Paul
Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush - Live
Jane's Addiction - Nothing Shocking
Various - Shakuhachi (Bamboo flute)
Flint • Apr 6, 2006 9:50 am
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick
Miles Davis - In A Silent Way

That's all I can definitively say right now.

I was just discussing Steve Vai - Passion & Warfare yesterday, but, I don't know, I love it, but, every day until forever? That's what makes it so tough. I might say some Herbie Hancock or Coltrane or alot of other things, but the three I posted, I'm pretty sure about those. Another one that might fall too far outside the criteria, but is still great, is Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels On A Gravel Road.
Guyute • Apr 6, 2006 9:35 pm
