The smarter you are, the harder this is

hot_pastrami • Jun 5, 2004 12:33 am
It is said that the smarter a person is, the more difficulty they have in solving this puzzle. I don't know how much truth there is in that, but it took me about 30 minutes. Dr. Richard Duke at the University of Michigan, who uses this puzzle as a demonstration in his gaming/simulation courses, took more than a year to figure it out initially. Some people solve it in mere seconds.

The page has all the information you need to solve the puzzle. Don't spoil the answer for everybody else if you figure it out. Have fun!
elSicomoro • Jun 5, 2004 12:42 am
Okay...so that took about 5 minutes for me to figure out...hmmm...
marichiko • Jun 5, 2004 1:09 am
OK, I must be an imbecile worthy of sterilizing (I told ya'll I had minor neurological damage!). I figured it out on the 3rd try and the first one didn't count cuz I just automatically put down the botanically correct number without looking at anything else.
Lady Sidhe • Jun 5, 2004 1:18 am
Damn, I must be brilliant...I can't seem to figure it out. This is annoying, but addictive. I'm not sure whether to thank you or not.... Every time I think I've figured it out and I get the number right, it ends up that the way I got the number right was wrong....

my cat got it right the first time (he likes to play with the keyboard while I type). Lady Sid's post made me realize that my earlier answer might have been dumb luck, and sure enough, it was. I guess there's hope for me after all. As to my cat, he's just a dumb animal, what else can Isay?

Took me about eight tries. And I ain't dumb.

Looks like an interesting test of left/right brain capability, coordination, and balance.
wolf • Jun 5, 2004 2:35 am
About 2 seconds. Most of it spent hunting for the numbers on the keyboard.

When I first was introduced to this puzzle (in 1977, I believe) it took me about 15 minutes.

I don't really think that smarter people take more time to solve it... I think that a person who is more open-minded, creative, and/or not technically-minded will probably solve the puzzle faster. Once I figured out the answer, I realized that the programmer inside of me had been working against me... I was looking at it all wrong.

If anyone really wants he answer I'll PM it to them; I do have to agree, it's nothing to do with how smart you are, just your abiliaty to think laterally - something which in itself is a sign of intelligence and creativity. As I said before, being a coder or any job where similar types of thinkig are needed is a massive disadvantage.

If you can't solve it, do this.
Stand back, repeat the name out loud to yourself a few times, click roll, get the answer and think for a few minutes... Think about the name.

Finally got it, one day later.

What's really bad is that that was the first solution that came to mind, however I took the language of the question too literally. After dismissing my original hypothesis, I went scatter brained and attacked the problem, looking for all sorts of things. I noticed one attribute that kept popping up, but I didn't stop to think out the logical ramifications of that until I left the problem and came back to it.

I'm just glad that "rose" isn't a homonym for "rows".

wtf??? petals, roses? It's a bunch of dice!! I thought I was quite laterally minded, obviously not. And I'm not trying to sound intelligent because I can't do it - it only tests one type of intelligence anyway when in fact there are (at least) nine different types. In a Mensa IQ test which measures spatial, linguistic and mathematical intelligence I scored 155 - chances are my zone of proximal development concerning other types of intelligence is frustratingly large.

It's nothing to do with stupid or not, it's just about your ability to think outside the box.

You can actually sove this two ways, you could sove it by simply building a large enough table of data and working it out by analysing that, or you could simply re-read the name a few times.

Took me about 10 minutes, and maybe 20 tries. I guessed right, purely by chance, several times, but hadn't figured out the pattern till I read the first post in this thread that talked about the "name." Went back and looked at it again and got it right away.

I agree, it has zero to do with intelligence, and has everything to do with how your brain is wired, and how relaxed a thinker you are.
vsp • Jun 7, 2004 11:55 am
First try, based on the name. Given the thread title, sterilize me.

I'm with Radar on this one. The puzzle is an amusement, a distraction. Purely for entertainment. I happened to have a few more minutes of time available to play around with it, and I got it. I'm sure Radar would get it too, given enough time.

No good can come from the puzzle, other than novelty value. Why waste time on it if you don't have enough time?

So are any of you Mensa "qualifiers" actually members of Mensa? (I ask because I went to a meeting with a friend once & I could imagine any less interesting way to pass my time, and I was just wondering if maybe it was that one chapter.)
Undertoad • Jun 7, 2004 12:42 pm
The outcome of one single puzzle doesn't say anything about your intelligence, but the study of different kinds of puzzles may help one to think creatively or to understand one's approaches to life.

In this case, there's is an interesting lesson involved for about half the people. If you don't get it after one minute, I think you may get frustrated and try harder. This "try harder" does not cut it for this problem, because it forces you to consider the problem along the same paths you have always used, just working harder. Then you get really frustrated because the problem just doesn't solve that way!

At that point, the solvers know, the right way to handle it is to relax and think differently.

I could not have solved this problem prior to 1992. In 1992 I finished working 2 years of Unix telephone tech support. This time turned me into a problem-solver. Primarily it turned me into a LISTENER. You have to PAY ATTENTION to the person describing the problem, because that is usually where you get the most clues.

Anyone who hasn't gotten the puzzle yet, it doesn't really speak to your intelligence. Go back to it, I swear this is useful. Imagine that the question in the puzzle is being asked of you by a four-year-old child. If you still don't get it, LOOK AWAY from the puzzle. Stop, and imagine a four-year-old looking at the puzzle and asking you the question. Why would a four-year-old ask that question? Picture the kid asking you the question. Is it a boy or a girl? Why would they ask that question? Imagine what the question would mean if you were four and didn't know that the dots represented numbers.

The people who got it right away are missing out because they don't get the free lesson.

hot_pastrami • Jun 7, 2004 1:10 pm
My problem is that I was looking at the puzzle as some sort of math and/or numerical patterns problem... I was trying to detect patterns, watching to see if the order of the dice had any relevance... basically looking at it all wrong. When my pattern-searching yielded little, I threw out all of my data and looked at it again, and got it almost instantly.

It's just perspective.

Onyx, have you ever done the "floating sausage" trick with your fingers? You hold your index fingers pointed at each other, about six inches from your nose, and then focus on something beyond them (like your keyboard.) You will see a little floating piece of finger in between your fingertips.

That's essentially what you're trying to do with the stereograms, focus past them. Try switching back and forth between focusing on your keyboard and your fingertips, and then try to do the same eye muscle movement while looking at the picture.

Ill-informed judgements aside, though, I never really felt the urge to participate in an IQ swap-shop, and as radar says, waste time attempting to communicate with people who have limited social skills.

I took Mensa's online test that tells you if you have a shot of getting in. I passed it. I think I would have needed to take an "official" test before being accepted. It's been a while, but I believe that they take the top 2% in intelligence. Out of a world of 6 Billion people, that means that 120,000,000 people meet the requirements for Mensa membership. It is NOT an exclusive club.

Why would they ask that question? Imagine what the question would mean if you were four and didn't know that the dots represented numbers.

The people who got it right away are missing out because they don't get the free lesson.

When I was four I thought...

What did I think?

I could say I thought the world was flat, or I could fly, but what I now think I then thought could never be expressed in the language of that age and limited experience.

What was the puzzle? Link gone.

Yeah, I noticed that too. But I read the whole thread, so I thought someone else should also.

It was interesting to speculate on what the puzzle was, with such limited clues.
Happy Monkey • Jun 28, 2007 12:27 pm
Here's the puzzle.
Shawnee123 • Jun 28, 2007 1:05 pm
I'm dumb, I can't get the rose puzzle. I'm blind, I can't see the magic image. If I were deaf I could play a mean pinball.

120 million people... That's like the population of Canada, right?

That's 0.2%... even a 2 year old can get in.

UT - thanks. That second site made everything clear.

9 mins, including finding it on my own from the clue in post #1.

There is no spoon.
HungLikeJesus • Jun 28, 2007 6:00 pm
Interesting - now the link that HM provided is broken. That wasn't one of us, I hope, got frustrated and broke it.
Shawnee123 • Jun 28, 2007 6:01 pm
That is odd.

Now it's working again. Maybe too much traffic generated by the Cellar?

Yes, also interesting is the revelation as to why he had difficulty with the game..
piercehawkeye45 • Jun 28, 2007 7:31 pm
I tried it for about 5 minutes then gave up on it.

I know I am missing something big.
bluecuracao • Jun 28, 2007 7:39 pm
I got it in 5 tries, took a couple of minutes.
Kingswood • Jun 28, 2007 7:40 pm
I encountered this puzzle a couple of years ago and at the time I figured it out in less than a minute.
lumberjim • Jun 28, 2007 7:41 pm
earlier today it was killing me...i thought i had it....and got it right twice, then i didnt have it.....

but just now...i looked at it and immediately figured it out.

sux cuz i figured it out 2 years ago but forgot.
kerosene • Jun 28, 2007 8:57 pm
Damn, this is depressing...I just keep rolling and just keep not getting it right.
Uisge Beatha • Jun 28, 2007 9:14 pm
Don't worry, case. You'll likely get it in due time. If you are really stuck, check Undertoad's hint:

Anyone who hasn't gotten the puzzle yet, it doesn't really speak to your intelligence. Go back to it, I swear this is useful. Imagine that the question in the puzzle is being asked of you by a four-year-old child. If you still don't get it, LOOK AWAY from the puzzle. Stop, and imagine a four-year-old looking at the puzzle and asking you the question. Why would a four-year-old ask that question? Picture the kid asking you the question. Is it a boy or a girl? Of course it's only easy for me to say this so casually because I finally solved it after lots of time and tries. Oh, hey, with this puzzle that just proves how brilliant I am! :D
monster • Jun 28, 2007 9:14 pm
grr
kerosene • Jun 28, 2007 9:28 pm
Hey, now I feel smarter. It took me over half an hour!

It is irritatingly simple.
DucksNuts • Jun 28, 2007 9:37 pm
I was ready to smash the friggen thing. The second link makes it heaps easier.
kerosene • Jun 28, 2007 10:04 pm
Yes, it was for me, too. when all the extra stuff wasn't involved, it was easier for me to figure out.
wolf • Jun 28, 2007 10:42 pm
I've been a Potentate of the Rose since 1978, I think. (1977 from my initial post in this thread, I was closer to the date then, so that must be right ... actually, thinking of the folks who inducted me, either early '77 or late '76 would be correct.)

You think it's bad trying to figure it out from the computer? Imagine being under the pressure of a half-dozen people who already know how it's done and are watching you work it out.

It's much better with the cruelty intact.
breakingnews • Jun 29, 2007 1:12 am
guess i'm a genius, because it's been about two hours (in between working) and i can't figure the damn thing out.
monster • Jun 29, 2007 8:36 am
OK, it was easier in the morning.

YES!

What does it say about me that my last few thoughts before I went to sleep last night were about "hmmm, petals around the rose, rose, petals, around..."

I couldn't wait to come in and try it and I was right!

It says that you need a computer at home.
Shawnee123 • Jun 29, 2007 9:17 am
I have the computer, just not the 'net.

Well, it gave me something to look forward to! :)
xoxoxoBruce • Jun 29, 2007 5:23 pm
No net at home? That's a lame excuse... you could take a thermos to work with you and fill it with net, to use at home. The school wouldn't miss a little bit each day.
theotherguy • Jun 29, 2007 5:37 pm
For those still working on this: It more about perspective than intelligence (at least that is what I will continue to tell myself). I got it in about 2 minutes. I just kept repeating the name to myself over and over as I rolled the dice.
bluecuracao • Jun 29, 2007 7:17 pm
I think you're right, newguy.
Rexmons • Jun 30, 2007 6:33 am

I got it on the first try.
Thesilkmeister • Jul 2, 2007 10:49 pm
yay. took me about 5 minutes and 10 goes to get it.....

....and i only once said "where's the fucking rose" to myself!
Stress Puppy • Jul 3, 2007 10:14 am
I took some dice around with me to various people and had them answer the question as well. Out of 4 people, one took three tries. One took one try. Another took two, and the other took about five. First is a college graduate about to start a doctoral program, second works for EBGames and has no higher education, third ... I don't know his education, but he seemed kind of slow, and the fourth is in the second year of his doctoral program.

Maybe this says something about our educational system?

That they don't spend time teaching silly dice games? I don't think I'll be asking the kid who works in game retail to be doing any important scientific work, myself.
Stress Puppy • Jul 4, 2007 10:08 am
Certainly not, but both of the highly educated people I asked had trouble thinking creatively about the puzzle, whereas the people that haven't been hammered into shape by the educational system figured it out right away.

I'm going to take some dice with me to a little get-together I'm attending tonight and see if people can figure it out there.

rkzenrage • Jul 4, 2007 7:27 pm
Got it on the first try. I qualified for Mensa, went to three meetings and was bored out of my mind.
Though I got it, I kinda' feel like it was not really a "game", more of a trick question.
Stress Puppy • Jul 5, 2007 12:21 pm
Agreed on the trick question bit. After asking 4 more people, the only person that didn't get it within two tries was a doctor, and she just didn't feel like solving a puzzle while cooking.

I got it in 6 tries. Actually, I think I got the idea in 3 tries but must have 'added' wrong so then I tried a couple more things before coming back.
bbro • Jan 29, 2008 4:05 pm
Took me a while, but I got it. It also took reading the entire thread and taking some advice from previous posters
ZenGum • Feb 1, 2008 7:59 am
I played with it for a while a few days ago. The original link didn't work but I googled up one that did, and which also randomly added different colors to each die.
I ran through about 6 combinations, didn't get it, and left it to do other things. I kept turning it over though, and had figured out some things to try. One of them was very close but needed a little fine tuning. :) So ... what, two days... does that make me a genius or a moron?
