6/3/2004: Surfers and dolphins

Where this came from I'm not exactly sure, but naturally, I'm vainly trying to keep alive the "dolphin or shark" argument.

Dolphins are smart.

I wonder if they learned that behaviour from watching the surfers, or if they have been doing it for millenia? I do know they have been playing in ships' bow waves for centuries.
lumberjim • Jun 3, 2004 11:54 am
if i was a dolphin, i'd surf all day every day
Katkeeper • Jun 3, 2004 12:25 pm
And it is not even Friday...

Sharks are too scarey for Friday images! *ducks*
MAdMoNKEY • Jun 3, 2004 12:34 pm
Doesn't it seem like the wave and the dozen or so dolphins are about to crash on top of those surfers?
Bullitt • Jun 3, 2004 12:56 pm
Where was this picture taken? I've heard stories about surfing w/ dolphins from Hawaii and California, but the water looks a little clear to be SoCal. But the wetsuits do indicate the colder Pacific rather than the Keys and the like. Or maybe those are just rash guards, can't tell.
Undertoad • Jun 3, 2004 2:17 pm
It was sent to me with no additional information! So I really don't know.
axlrosen • Jun 3, 2004 2:29 pm
I wonder how far in the dolphins get? I'm surprised they're not in danger of whacking against the bottom or getting beached.

That's a definite point to ponder - I wonder if they know when they've gone in too far and it's time to head back out to sea. Dolphins are pretty smart, so I'm sure they know when it's time, but it's not like you can ask one to tell you their secrets.

I guess if I could talk to dolphins, that would be pretty cool.

This picture also reminded me of the Simpson's episode where the Dolphins took over Springfield. That was pretty funny.

I got that picture once in an email too, it seems to have been out there for awhile.

Can't you just picture the Dolphin's saying "Naa Naa Na Ne Naa Naa!" in Dolphese or whatever they speak?

Hey how about a kiss?

This happens a lot over here in Manly (Oz). I'm forever watching dolphins frolic around in the surf. It's the most wonderful thing to see. This time of year you can see them quite clearly playing with the surfers, the water is just so clean and clear just like looking through glass. It's just the best feeling watching them play.:D
Pearcie (AUS) • Jun 3, 2004 7:15 pm
Yeah, this happens quite often in Australia, it's still great any time you experience it though! There is of course the split second where you think to yourself "Sweet! A dolphin - or maybe its a shark...nope, definitely dolphin"
It's also a spin out when your body-surfin with a mate, you both catch a wave, you look to the side to see how he's goin and he's gone, in his place a big shiny grey mammal.
Leah • Jun 3, 2004 7:20 pm
Cool Pearcie :thumb:
I've actually swum with sharks in a Surf Carnival, couldn't get out of the water fast enough. They were a pack of hammer head sharks just cruising around looking for some fun. Actually it's happened a few times.
Pearcie (AUS) • Jun 3, 2004 7:25 pm
That's a bit much for me Leah, I don't like sharks too much. One has to respect them for being the killing machines they are but swimming with them? No thanx, I'll leave that up to the reality show contestants.

I recently read an article about exotic animal vacations - one vacation you can go on is a shark cruise. They take you out in a boat, lower you into the water in a cage, and you can see all of the Great White Sharks you want. It was the 5/15/04 issue of American Way Magazine on American Airlines.

I'm with you all - no thanks to swimming/surfing with sharks.
Sun_Sparkz • Jun 3, 2004 10:37 pm
Sharks are so beautiful! they really dont pose as much threat as one would imagine. Sure, they are dangerous, but so are a lot of animals. I have been in the surf with them many times, in fact, the beach on my street has a breeding ground just 100 metres of the breakers. You can glide over on your board and look down and see them all swimming about. Ive never heard of any shark attacks on our beach though.

Dolphin sightings for me though are a bit boring, unless your right next to them all you really see is a fin every now and then jump up and then back down again. Still, cute little mammals though!

6 of those critters are sharks in drag.:p

I can help you there. I've got it myself.

It's from MSNBC's Image of The Week, from before they switch over to a mean old Flash interface that won't let you save 'em to your hard drive.
Undertoad • Jun 4, 2004 7:00 pm
Thanks guy. (I do a screen capture to get the MSNBC pics these days, when I remember to look there)

Easy as 1,2,3.
1-Press alt/printscreen.
2-Open a new file in Photoshop then click on paste.
3- Edit the picture.
:)

I second, third...tenth that. Ain't no way I'm getting near those things.

I would love to swim with the dolphins. Guess that would fall under things I haven't done yet (or whatever that thread was called...:D )
Pi • Jun 10, 2004 5:42 am
You should watch the film "Le Grand Bleu" ("The big blue"???) by Luc Besson with Jean Reno and Jean-Marc Barr. Swimming with dolphins...
wolf • Jun 10, 2004 12:45 pm

Since I have no idea where the real fucking thread is and even Google can't find it, I'll park this here.

Is that a missing aeroplane?!
