Why are you cool?

Clodfobble • Apr 29, 2004 2:57 pm
Inspired by the two-lies-and-a-truth thread; I got tired of keeping track of what was a lie. So what (true) event, skill, talent, or acquaintance makes you really cool?

For me, I get paid to make videogames.

Designing and building my post and beam house was supposed to take care of that but, alas, I'm almost as big a dork as LJ.
SteveDallas • Apr 29, 2004 3:52 pm
You prejudiced bastard, what did those poor basses ever do to you? You need to be more accepting of alternate voice ranges.

Me? Cool? Hmmm. I would say "I'm not" but lumberjim already took that one!

I'm not a people person. But I've been supporting IT in higher education for 12 years now (longer if you count work I did as a student), and if there's one thing I've learned how to do, it's to "talk down" somebody who's getting hysterical because of a computer issue. Maybe that's cool.
Clodfobble • Apr 29, 2004 3:57 pm
glatt, what was the picture for?
glatt • Apr 29, 2004 4:02 pm
My neighbor, a doctor, was launching his hot air balloon from his back yard again. I was holding the "crown line" to keep it from blowing around in the light breeze. I got a couple rides in that balloon for helping out on his ground crew.

The photojournalist (heh heh), who had been tipped off in advance, composed a picture with me in the forground, and the balloon in the background. But the balloon dominated the picture.

Codfobble, what kind of games? what platform?
Clodfobble • Apr 29, 2004 4:13 pm
Mostly sports games and third- or first-person shooters, on Xbox and PS2. We used to make games for the Gamecube, but not anymore. A shame, since the GC had SUCH a better audio compression algorithm...

Undertoad • Apr 29, 2004 7:22 pm
Right now I'm bandless... even though I've been seriously working on getting into something for the last five months. One band split into two parts just as I auditioned... one half of what was left asked me to start something up with them but I didn't get the right sort of vibe from them. I had a one-nighter with a singer-songwriter, but he's not gigging regularly. I could have gotten this thing with twin sister guitarists, playing at CBGBs in 6 weeks, but their songs were too amateur. The ZZ Top tribute band guy got back to me after many months, but I changed my mind after realizing my range is just too low for "Tush" and without "Tush" you have nothing... plus, I'm not manly enough to pull that stuff off anyway. I'm waiting for a demo CD from this guy whose act sounds right up my alley, so we shall see.

As long as your not in an unlimited your still cool.

I have a 4 cyl so I have the 4.11 rearend. Still a lil slow, but does okay offroad. I hate automatic jeeps. I know the rockcrawling crowd loves them. Well, I'm cool because I drive a beat up 4x4 '92 Ford Explorer with a stick shift and I've done Imogene Pass all by myself from Ouray to Telluride going the wrong way over a one way jeep trail to crash the Telluride Blue Grass Festival and didn't get caught. In the old days when Highway 160 over Wolf Creek Pass (elevation 10,640 ft) was a two lane highway with no guard rails, I held the unofficial 4-corners championship for driving the pass at an over-all average of 50 miles an hour under winter conditions for 2 years straight. I've been on the front page of two newspapers and I write my own, called THE MANITOU MULE. I'm not a musician myself, but my boyfriend is a classical guitarist who gets paid very good money for his gigs. And Bill the Cat is my role model. So there!:D

Yeah, I've lived in Durango and a little place nobody's ever heard of about 30 miles north of Telluride. Great country for this 4x4 adventure girl. I don't recommend going the wrong way over Imogene these days, though - it gets a lot more use than it once did. My most favorate spot for off-roading is the Escalante area in Utah.
Elspode • Apr 30, 2004 1:07 pm
Not only am I uncool, I wouldn't recognize coolness if it came up and froze my cojones off of me.

I have zero fashion sense, I perform music that no one who isn't a complete Pagan geek wants to listen to, I live in a totally mediocre suburban neighborhood in a completely obscure suburban city, I drive a vehicle that looks like a zillion other vehicles, I am unathletic, overweight, unattractive, unhealthy, unmotivated, pompous, immature, petulant and a pessimist.

For a moment, I thought that my writing abilities might be a redeeming cool quality, until I just realized what a run-on sentence I just wrote.
mrnoodle • Apr 30, 2004 1:28 pm
Dang it. Everybody already took my answers.

But I'm a guitarist. People like our band even though it's instru-metal throwback stuff. And when I was in college, my journalism professor wrote me a letter of recommendation that said I was the best writer he had ever taught (ok, so you can't tell TODAY, but I used to be good.)

Other than that, I suck.

Songline for Wolf Creek Pass

You'll know you're almost home
when you reach that pull-out on the road
the one where you put your chains on -
or take them off.
The Rio Grande is just a creek here,
head waters 90 degree angles due west
at the Continental Divide.
Big up country starts Now!

Gear down here and begin to gather speed.
Consider the laws of classical physics
Force = mass x acceleration
Vectors becomes a calculus of place.
And in those days the road was narrow -
two lanes, no guard rails.

Up ahead now, there's a semi going far too slow
And I have a record to break
Besides I never had any use for brakes.
In the mountains, use your gears.
Don't brake going up.
Don't burn out going down.

Swing out and around,
tires skittering near edge
Sharp curve,
1,000 foot drop off!
Pay it no mind
Fear would have you look over the edge
stand on the brakes,
go out of control
skid over and down.

Drive through the fear.
and keep your eyes where you want the tires to go.
You are staying on the road!
Then swing back in
smooth and easy.

It was a riff done by girl and car,
road and mountain.
The trucker flashes his lights -
On Off!
On Off !
- twice in admiration!
I lift one hand from the wheel,
turn and blow him a kiss.
But the road claimed my attention like a jealous lover.

You learn to respect the Pass
listen to its demands
after 7 years of travel -
sometimes in winter blizzards,
sometimes in sudden wash-outs of summer rain.
And don't forget the occasional avalanche
thrown in just to see if you are paying attention.
Wolf Creek always has its moods
and so do I.

Today I am in love
with this road,
these mountains, these Spring wildflowers,
which have come out just for me,
watching as I take those sharp turns
effortlessly - flying,
accelerating into the curves,
my small Suburu hugging the road tight
like that lover
returning home
after a long absence.

Two days later sitting in the faculty lounge,
I'll boast to a friend -
A fellow poet and a philosopher,
but most of all my main competition
in a serious contest -
Who could drive Wolf Creek the best!

"Did the entire pass averaging 50 mph,"
I'd say casually.
He set his coffee cup down with a sound
like a guantlet being flung.
"Prove it!"
So I did.
Took a long drag on my cigarette and said
"Let's go!"

A couple of college teachers cutting class
on a warm spring day
leaving our students behind like shadows
in empty class rooms.

My friend had given me the music for Wolf Creek,
Jean Luc Ponty's incredible jazz violin.
It happened to be in my cassette deck
that day I drove the Wolf Creek invitational.
I hope in return I gave him good company,
talking poetry and the philosophy of road advisories;
dragging the main strip -
Highway 160 between Pagosa Springs and South Fork,
showing off how well we belonged there.

The real kids behind us
would return to the city,
in search of better things.
We'd already found them,
topping the summit of that pass.
Wolf Creek!
Elevation 10,640 feet
Chain law
No longer in effect!

That's not how I make them. I burn different types of candles, along with crayons (sparkly, regular, neon, swirl) and make a base for whatever I'm going to make. Then I mold the drippings that don't stay attached to the candle, or I burn a tealight candle, and pour the wax out onto a surface and carve it into whatever I want it to be, and attach it to the base-- or I carve the candle itself into what I want it to be.

For instance, I have one candle that started out in a decorative flowerpot. I took several tea candles, burned them, poured the wax out, and carved them into flowers. I let them solidify, peeled them up, then heated them again and molded them. I then took several long green drips that had broken off a candle that was on a bottle, and attached them into the flowerpot as background greenery, then added the flowers. It looks real.

I took pictures of all my candle sculptures, but I haven't gotten them developed yet.

I need something that I can maybe spray on the finished sculptures that won't degrade them, but will preserve them well enough so that they won't melt easily. I have one sculpture of a castle on a hill that I have to keep in front of the air conditioner, or the walls of the castle start to slide...lol...

That wasn't cool tho....that was stupid the way I placed myself. The "cool" part was when I hopped right back up, and went to work (chainsaw kept running) on the part of the tree that fell with me (I was in pain & feelin like a dumbass, but I knew the wife was watching).

How on earth could you stand to leave? I know, poverty. As far as I'm concerned the area around Wolf Creek and points west is some of the most drop dead beautiful in the world. I travel the valley on a regular basis. From what point would you like an update? And where are you now?

My favorite town was Creede, followed by South Fork. The latter was already turning into some kind of retirement haven by the time I left in 95 (I was only there for a year). I'm afraid it's probably worthless by now. I liked Pagosa Spgs alot too - we used to have an archery tournament in the early fall there that was my favorite event of the year.

I live in Ft. Collins now, way up north. When I get rich again I'm going to move to a cabin in the San Juans and telecommute. I can send in projects by carrier pigeon until they get a phone line up to me.

I live in Ft. Collins now, way up north. When I get rich again I'm going to move to a cabin in the San Juans and telecommute. I can send in projects by carrier pigeon until they get a phone line up to me.

I haven't been up to Creede lately, but I've written off Pagosa. It now has THREE traffic lights and actual traffic jams. Durango has simply become an Eastern extension of L.A., plus the forest fire near there a few years back was really destructive. I drive thru Durango with my eyes closed these days. The place I'd like to go is either Norwood or Dolores and become a roving correspondent for THE SAN JUAN HORSE SHOE
:D

No, I believe there's a country-western song (an old one) by the name of "Wolf Creek Pass." I got a bit self-indulgent there and put in a poem I'd written some years back that is done to the music from Jean Luc Ponty's "Civilized Evil" album.

Black Bear Road

By Bill Fries & Chip Davis

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Me an' R.J. an' the kids was on a camp out in the mountains, an' we had us one a' them U-Drive-'Em Army Jeep cars which we had rented from a fella by the name a' Kuboske for thirty bucks a day, buy yer gas along the way, take a rabbit's foot, an' leave a pint a' blood for a deeposit

An' he'd 'splained it all to us how we's 'sposed to git to Telluride, which was fifty miles away by way of the regular highway, however there was a short-cut, BUT, unless we had drove the Black Bear Road before, we'd be, well, we'd be better off to stay in bed an' sleep late (now pay no 'ttention to the guitar there)

Well we took up off'n th' highway, an we come upon a sign sez "Black Bear Road - You Don't Have To Be Crazy To Drive This Road, But It Helps", I sez to, R.J. this must be the short cut road Kuboske's a talkin' about. She didn't pay no mind 'cause she's busy makin peanut butter sanwiches for the kids in the back seat, throwin' rocks, an' drinkin' KoolAid, an' playing "Count The License Plates On Cars", but they wasn't a havin' too much fun playin' Count The License Plates On Cars, well 'cause there wern't no other cars

Went about a mile an' a half, in about four hours, busted off the right front fender, an' tore a hole in the oil pan on a rock as big as a hall closet, went over a bump an' spilt the Kool-Aid, an' Roy Gene stuck his bolo knife right through the convertible top, an' the dog threw up all over the back seat (peanut butter don't agree with him see)

So we had to stop, an' take off the top, an' air everything out, an' clean it up. The dog run off, an' R.J. sez she felt her asthma comin' on. I's settin' there wonderin' what to do, when the en-tire scenic San-Gee-Juan U-Drive-'Em Army Jeep Car sank in the mud (at thirteen thousand feet above sea level!)

Well we shoveled it out, an' ate our lunch, the dog made a yellow hole in the snow, an' Roy Gene got out his Instamatic an' took a snapshot of it. Mary Elizabeth drawed a picture of the road. It looked like a whole bunch of Zs an' Ws all strung together, an' R.J. took one look at that picture, and said the only way she's goin' down that Jeep car road 'as over her dead body, an' then a rock slipped out from under the wheel, and the U-Drive-'Em Army Jeep Car, well it went right over, right over the edge of a cliff (Whah-Haa-Haa-Haa-Hoo-Hoo-Hoo)

Doggonit Roy Gene, when I tell ya to put a rock under the wheel, I mean ROCK, now look at that what you had there ain't no bigger then a grapefruit !

Mostly dork, but I have two coolness bits.

I write shrink-wrap software for a living and have worked for very cool companies - Aldus, Spyglass. I now work for a semi-cool company - SPSS. [Very cool if you're into statistics]

I play bass in a jazz group. We're just a local band, but we have fun - and jazz is always cool.
jinx • May 2, 2004 11:55 am
I can burp really loud.
Yelof • May 2, 2004 11:57 am
In University I used SPSS a lot, I was quite good a using it, it made it look like I almost understood the statistical reports I was creating. Makes you cool in my book.

It's not my parents, they don't even live in the same country. (thank god)

I suppose I could be considered  because I:

- make adverts
- play jazz/blues guitar/piano
- street dance
- read The Guardian (edgy but pretentious Brit paper for trendsetting media types)
- drive a ferrari*

*that was a lie. But I do have a friend with a mini van....
Pi • May 4, 2004 10:03 am
I'm cool because :
- I was never drunk in my life (24 years alcool-free)
- I live in the richest country of the world and only have a Nissan Primera 96
- I actually have NATO Security Clearance
- I run a semi-marathon in 1h37 and still swim 400m under 8min
- I used SPSS (and understood what I was doing)
- I speak 5 languages fluently
- and I do understand women

People are constantly asking me what makes me so damn cool. I usually reply by doing that about-to-shake-your-hand-but-fake-you-out-at-the-last-second-by-fixing-my-hair bit. Oh yeah. I'm so cool that it hurts. No, really... it does. Ouch.

Well, I guess I can come up with a few reasons:

I'm married to a babe.

I appeared briefly in the movie Footloose.

I've owned some fine high-powered automobiles, most recently a supercharged 2000 Camaro SS (sniff).

I create computer graphics for a living (though this is a recent change from programming).

I CAN believe it's not butter.

I had one of my photos published on the front page of a metropolitan newspaper, above the fold, about 8x10.

I can burp louder than jinx. WAY louder than Lumberjim.

I can drink an enormous amount of alcohol without being affected (ask me about the only time I ever got drunk).

...and many other reasons I am not at liberty to disclose.
See? Did I tell you or did I tell you?
jaguar • May 4, 2004 1:10 pm
Pi dude, aren't you meant to be assassinating 3rd world dicatators and recovering nuclear weapons somewhere?
russotto • May 4, 2004 2:49 pm
Well, we've already esablished in the other thread that I'm not cool. But here's some mitigating factors

- I drive a Miata
- I <strike>can</strike>could skate fast (damned injury)
- Have met Benoit Mandelbrot and Sergei Brin (on separate occasions) (OK, this is only geek-cool, not real cool)
- I can fake statistics in Igor way better than you guys can in SPSS, despite Igor being totally outclassed :-)

Well, I'm cool because I'm multi-talented: I can draw, paint, sing, play keyboard, bass, & sax, make crafts (jewelry & hair accessories); I foster kittens. And I'm ambidextrious.

And I'm fair...which is why I am now going to the topic "why aren't you cool?" so I can list all my dorky qualities. And man, do I have them. :3eye:

I have resurrected this thread in order to add new coolness points.

Starting tomorrow I will be writing iPad software and learning animation techniques and opengl.

So. Add in my jazz points. Carry the three. Factor out my shlub clothes...

Hmm. I may escape complete dorkdom in the next decade. :D

I play with computers all day. I do it to help doctors and other people who work at a hospital to treat patients.

On the weekends, I take my kids out all day long, going to the science museum, or to Lego Land (we have had season passes to both). In the car, I play classical music, and later on I hear them humming the parts.

I do everything my own way, regardless of how long it takes or how much I'm overthinking it. I'm honest whether you want me to be or not.

I listen to people and try to empathize with them as deeply as I can. I treat everyone with the same respect, regardless of whether they are the housekeeper or the CEO. (This works better for me in real life than on the internet.)

I had my picture on the front page of the hometown newspaper where my hospital is located, dressed as the Joker (full face paint, green hair, tailored purple suit) with a caption stating that I "brought the house down with my authentic Joker laugh."

And, I have a vintage 1970s Ludwig clear acrylic bass drum with blue rope lights mounted inside the shell--!

I've raised both dogs and cats from birth, including bottle feeding, making them go potty, and everything in between.

My nieces think I am cool. So do some of their mates.

Apparently I am their 'cool auntie'.
Sundae • Feb 1, 2012 7:33 am
Like Dana, I am cool because kids think I am cool.

When I eat in the canteen I create a rush of children at my table. They should seat 8 children, but obviously I take up two spaces as a larger adult (compared to two six year olds).
It turns out we can get ten (inc me) if we really try.
I do remonstrate with them, but as long as there is space on the table, they don't mind if half their arses are hanging off the end of the benches.

I am able to negotiate with Tiger by promising to sing to him.
"If we read to page 6 then I'll sing you the woah-oh-woah-woah song."
Which is What's New Pussycat, from my singing cat puppet.
Or A Mouse Lived in a Windmill which I used when we were stuck on Where and There on his wordwall.

How cool is that?
Bribing a child with singing?
I must have such a wonderful voice!
Well. At least it works with him.

My other child is fixated on Angry Birds, to the extent I've started playing it online in an attempt to see how I can use it in lessons.

Sundae;792140 wrote:

True.

I got the biggest head a couple weekends ago. I was with my son's Webelos den, and we were roasting marshmallows over a fire. I'm pretty anal about roasting marshmallows. I want them to be evenly golden brown all over and sagging off of the stick, indicating they are warmed up and gooey throughout. The boys were trying to do a good job of roasting, but just don't know the tricks yet. One of them saw my perfect marshmallow just before I was about to put it on my s'more, and exclaimed "Mr. Glatt!" in a very approving tone of voice. And then one of the others looked over and said "Mr. Glatt!" and then a few more, all in awe of my perfect marshmallow. And then finally, one who is a little loud, kind of yelled "MR. GLATT!" And then all the other parents who were milling around stopped what they were doing to look at my perfect marshmallow. So I spent the next ten minutes explaining the finer details of roasting a perfect marshmallow to a dozen boys. They all got to be pretty good.
Lamplighter • Feb 1, 2012 8:59 am
Glatt, nice story :)
classicman • Feb 1, 2012 10:42 am
Thats great glatt.

Oh, and there certainly is an art to roasting the perfect marshmallow.
BigV • Feb 1, 2012 10:48 am
Y'know, they get evenly gooey on the inside when you catch them on fire too. Plus, you get to catch them on fire. There is a certain cool factor among scouts that age that comes from catching stuff on fire.

From one Webelos Dad to another. :)
