For the Straight people:
Have you ever been "hit on" by a gay person? What did you do?

For Gay people:
I'm sure you've been hit on by the opposite sex. What do you do?

Yes. A guy at the ATM complimented my hair several times. I asked him if he was waiting for something, he asked if I was straight, and I said yes. He apologized and left.

My wife tells me I'm the least observant person she knows.

And since I can't tell when I'm hit on by women, I've no idea if I've been hit on by a guy or not. I do know I've run into some that are just too friendly.

When I was a salesman, I took a test drive with a 40-45 yr old guy who was very complimentary to me about my looks. It made my skin crawl. I don;t think he actually hit on me, but he was definatley testing the water. I made sure to mention my wife several times.

When I was a waiter at Denny's, I had a steven segal type pony tail, and I had several offers from guys named Ramone. whook!

maybe I'm a homophobe. jinx says I am. I dunno, I'm not scared of gay people, but I am a little insensitive toward them at times.......

I was once invited to play for the other team. I said, "No, but thanks" and that was the end of that.

I have this experience because I'm sensitive, eloquent, and I take care of my appearances. Also I have a background in creative arts.

I've never been hit on by a guy. I think that, for some reason, I project this massive hetero wave or something. I know *lots* of gay people, many of them close friends, so I know I don't radiate homophobic vibes (don't really have any of which I'm aware...my father was bi, and we had lots of female impersonators around the house when I was growing up).

I am, however, also utterly unaware when women are flirting with me. I just figure it is completely impossible, so I don't notice it. Mrs. Elspode, on the other hand, has pointed out to me a few such incidents which she observed as being particularly flagrant on the part of other women, so I guess it does happen, if her judgement is to be believed.

I dunno. I'm not much to look at, I don't have money, I dress poorly, I'm rather aged and coarse, so what's to like?

To my knowledge, I've never been hit on by anybody.

But it's possible I'm as clueless as Elspode and blue58.

HA, I used to work with a gay guy, he was really cool but everybody pussyfooted around the issue. So my co-workers threw me a birthday bash one night, I'm actually doing shots (I never drink liqour), so I'm all like "let's straighten this shit out right now", "Scott, you're gay right?"....and he says, Yeah...dude, when you hired me I had orange hair for gods sake, I figured everybody knew".

Except for me, Mr. Observant. Anyhoo, it was all cool after that and everyone lightened up a LOT now that it was out in the open, used to test out gay jokes on him...he cracked up when he found out we referred to the Vikings stadium as the Homodome.

OH lordy..the memories this thread brings up....

Incident #1: Lesbian flirted with me, told her I was straight, we became good friends after that.

Incident #2: Lesbian flirted with me, she knew that I was straight, she kept trying anyhow. Turns out she was a serial liar and a thief. She was banished from the circle of friends with the swiftness.

Incident#3: Was hanging out at the local gay bar (back when I was a fag hag), and a lesbian started talking to me. She told me about herself, including how she sometimes had thoughts of suicide. Had to tell her I was straight, and we never saw her again. Scary to think what happened to her...

Incident #4: Was hanging out at the same bar one Saturday night. It was closing time, and people were leaving. Lesbian and her girlfriend (or friend for the night) walked past, and one of them lightly touched my butt. I turned around, shocked, and she winked at me. (whoa!). I could only laugh, because I was taken off guard. Then I was thinking, "Hell, why can't a MAN do that?!?!?!" :p

I was... but I think it's a compliment. I f you're so attractive that even gay people want to date you... Don't bother a lot about that, have some gay friends and they are cool. To me just ordinary people doing things I wouldn't do, but what the... I'm not the one who gonna judging them.

I had several gay hits on me, but just like when women have hit on me, I don't realize what happened until I think about it much later. I'm realizing now its not just me with this.


*Thread Hijack* I have heard several times from women that pink dress shirts are the in thing for men. The one 'metrosexual' guy at work came in with a pink shirt and at least three different women complimented him on it.

Heh! I used to be flattered as all hell that at least *someone* thought that I was attractive enough to hit on (my self esteem back then wasn't what it is today). :p

I have been hit on twice by a woman, that I know of.
The first time it happened the woman was kinda dancing around the issue and it took me several minutes to figure out what was going on. I can tell pretty quick when a guy is hitting on me but when a woman does it, it goes whoosh, right over my head.

The second time it happened the girl got real touchy feely with me and I asked her flat out what she was doing (I don't like people I just meet getting all handsy with me). She told me and I remember just standing there while my brain tired to catch up. I said no thank you and left the area as fast as I could.

I have no problem with people who are gay. Had several flaming gay friends in High School, and a lesbian friend in collage. I just have a hard time figuring out what to do when one hits on me. I never expect it and the shock factor makes it hard for my brain to think rationally.

One of my first jobs was at a department store, when I was young and naive. It took me months to figure out that this older guy who liked to hang out with me actually had the hots for me. The dude was creepy, too... his eyes didn't quite point the right way, and he wasn't all there mentally. He looked like a big, fat, bald poster boy for sweaty perverts everywhere.

Once I realized that his "friendliness" was in fact some bizarre form of NAMBLA-sponsored flirting, my skin crawled a few laps around my body, and I made sure to minimize contact with him from then on. He got even stranger then, and started following me places. It was a hoot. I disentangled myself from the inopportune employment, and he quickly became but an unpleasant memory.

There have been a few other times where men have seemed suspiciously over-fascinated with me, but nothing worth mentioning. I guess that's just the price to pay when you're as gooooood looking as I am. *cough*

I have no problem with gay men, but I can't grasp their motivations. Lesbians? Sure! If I were a woman, I'd be a lesbian. But what kind of guy picks dudes over chicks? Observe as my mind boggles.

Growing up my mom had many couple friends that were lesbian and gay. I started to notice a distinct pattern in almost all of them. In a relationship there is alway a man and a woman. The gay couples she knew always consisted of a flaming gay man and a less detectable gay partner. The lesbian couples were the same, always one butch woman and one "normal" woman. So I think that is the reason some of them are more butch, because someone has to be the masculine part of the relationship.

Having never been a lesbian, I cant answer why it works that way. I just know that out of about 20 Gay/Lesbian couples I was around growing up, all but 2 had a very obvious masculine member and a very obvious feminine member of the couple. Maybe you could argue that being Gay is out of the natural order of things and having a feminine and masculine member of the couple is natures way of trying to balance it some how. I don't believe that but I am sure someone, somewhere does.

How does that theory work on a Male couple? Where one is flaming gay and the other is just a average acting male. What makes the average "likes to watch sports" male attracted to the very feminine male? I don't know that I can buy that some woman made him distrust and fear women and so he turned to a man.

Hell I even dated one, and it's quite an odd feeling to walk into a room at a party and see the girl you brought going down on another girl. I mean yeah part of you wants to go cool wheres the video camera, or say something like mind if I cut in. Then you think WTF. Why am I not the one under the tounge right now. (she did make amends by hooking me up with her straight friend that night, but that still doesn't count).

She turned into the butch type, but wasn't so much at the time I knew her. So hopefully that doesn't mean I have repressed feelings or anything.

I do have people think I'm gay. Maybe it's because I'm 30 and unmarried. Or maybe it's because I walk around and freak the guys at work out by slapping them on the ass and saying 'good game man'. I mean that's not gay is it. All the sports stars do it right?

I'm the cut-up at work so everybody knows me. For fun they told the new guy that I really was gay and he is a homophobe deluxe. I always make it a point to wave at him as I'm walking by and he won't even look at me. I walked into his work area and he had his back to me and when I spoke I swear he almost crapped himself. Dropped a 4 foot 2x4 he was carrying (I was 5 foot away ;) ) and just looked at it and me and then finally grabbed it again in a sturdy grip.

When this rumour had grown out of my control I started to play it up. I mean what better job protection do you have in a turbulent job market then to become a minority. I can't change my ethinicity, but sexual orientation is cool. I started asking some of the guys about anal sex. I mean if you do that with a woman doesn't that make you gay? I mean a hole is a hole right? If you had anal sex with a woman, would you have it with a man if I gave you 20 million dollars and noboy knew? I think some of them do think I'm gay now. And some of them know the truth and know that I'm just not right in the head and will do anything for a laugh.

It is wierd though that I don't tend to post much, but here I am posting a short novella about people thinking I'm gay.

Being attracted to a man is normal for a straight woman. Yes it may be a gay man, but physically its still a man. I have been attracted to gay men, but it was a physical attraction as in "my god that is a good looking man" and nothing more. The friends I have had that were gay were more like girlfriend to me then men. After hanging out with them a few times any attraction was gone, because they act like women.

Often? I don't think so, but it does happen. Maybe they see something in a masculine woman that they are missing. Maybe they like someone else being in charge. There could be a million reasons why a man would be attracted to a woman who is masculine.

People have two (or more) parameters: sexual self-identity, and sexual attraction.

So "dykes" would self-identify as more male, but would be sexually attracted to women.

A "lipstick lesbian" would self-identify as female, but would be sexually attracted to women, too.

Repeat with men.

Perhaps there's a third axis too -- compatability. Do you get along with a more masculine personality, or a more feminine one?

For the record, I self-identify as more masculine, but am attracted to men... Not "dyke" (I have long hair, love to cook and like jewelry) but have been accused of having more balls than most men.

Is that a bad thing?

I'd say it's really m/f. I know plenty of women who are strong, self-reliant, backbones of the family, and yet are clasically "feminine".

My first really serious boyfriend was/is gay.

I didn't know until about 3/4ths of the way through our year together, and then I just kinda ignored it.

I have also had a long-standing reputation for being a lesbian. Also I probably "male-identify", am confident (outwardly), self-reliant, outspoken, tall, not a girlie-girl - all of this promoted the dyke image.

Fast forward eight years or so, I'd lived away for six years and recently returned to buy a house and settle here for good. I find that my arrival is bruited abroad here as "That dyke that speaks Russian has bought the house on the hill". This reputation of mine wasn't weakened by the fact that my first two guests here were single women of my own age. When I did walk into my local bar with a male guest one of the regulars said "Good God, limey! You've walked in with a man!!!!!!!!!!". I had already decided that it was time to challenge this reputation of mine and had primed the guy that he was to behave like an ex-boyfriend ....

Not that I care either way, except that to be thought a lesbian when you aren't means you won't get hit oN by guys, except the guys that want to convert you (and that's WIERD !), imo.

I know this girl who is very masculine, and i admit, sometimes... she is attractive to me. but only for her masculine qualities. because i like men. i just dont get it.

I would think that you could ask a lesbian who is into the butch types as to why she chooses to be with a female that emulates a man.

everyone looks different/ is different blah blah blah. but there are certain things that are out of the ordinary that some women do to go out of their way to butch up their appearence, themselves and thier lives.

well i guess to an extent it is not out of the ordinary. but there is a line. obvoiusly, straight or gay, all women are different and some will act more feminine than others. Personally i cant stand girls who act TOO prissy and just talk about hair and make up because that really gets under my skin.

Growing up in the country i was surrounded by lots of 'hard' women, who were in a sense butchy and 'rough' and possessed masculine qualities. these all still appear to be ordinary women to me.

i am talking about those who perhaps tape their breats down, refuse to wear make up or jewelery, want to be a mechanic, cut their hair to a mere 5cm long, wear only jeans and big oversize jackets, and tend to be overly agressive.(variations allowing)

I am not at all saying there is anything WRONG with intentionally acting this way. i just find it hard to get my head around the whole " i like girls, but my girlfriend may as well be a man"

To be totally honest, one of my gay friend in high school was Soooooo good looking. And while after a while I thought of him more as a girlfriend then a man, every now and then I would look at him and think "its a dam shame your gay, or I would so be all over you right now". It wasn't something that popped into my head everyday, but it did happen on occasion. Gay men are after all men, and I think its perfectly normal for a straight woman to be attracted to them. They often times have the advantage of being close to us like our girlfriends but they are most decidedly male, and I think thats very attractive to a woman.

Maybe you can get your head around it this way: Lets say a female who really is against the penetration thing - finds it repulsive - but otherwise is for the most part "normal" (Normal in this case meaning feminine and looking for a masculine counterpart for relationship). In her eyes, the bulldyke would be just right. All the masculinity and none of the dangly bits!

I believe very strongly that every individual should be free to define his or her own sexuality, and to 'label' themselves, so to speak, should they feel it necessary to do so, but not everyone agrees, of course - to some people, it just doesn't make sense to say that someone who has ever had an adult, same-sex experience is "straight".

I've had gay friends tell me that if it's only physical - no emotional involvement or romantic feelings at all - then they, at least, wouldn't necessarily consider a person "gay" because of that; then there are the gay friends who maintain that nobody is straight - they're a lot of help.
