I didn't even know it was coming. I was over at Boing Boing, and saw that 3M, the fine folks who make Scotch tape, have developed a new duct tape.
It's just like the old duct tape, but it's clear, and lasts much longer outdoors.

Well, there's duct tape and then there's duct tape. The weathered pictures from the link make it look like the clear tape still has a woven mesh in it. That's a good thing but cuts down the "invisibility" advantage a mite. And that "gooey white muck" is pretty good at filling in irregularities in your wrap job. Of course you might have to wrap a rag around it to keep it off your hands. :haha:
But for coolness and holding a bumper on, you can't beat Mil. Spec., dark green, duct tape.

I got my hands on a roll of mil. spec waterproffing tape once , it took plires to pull this stuff off the roll , but it held and sealed like crasy !!! Oh and LOTS of whith gooey stuff to deal with , paint thinner wouldn' even take it off your hands !!!!!!
Hundred Mile-an-Hour tape is good stuff for sure.

I've had a duct tape fixation since college.

All we need now is that transparent aluminum that Mr. Scott spoke of in STIV, and we're pretty much set.
With the advent of transparent duct tape, though, my window glass changing days are over.
When I saw the clear duct tape, I had one of those "Gee, technology is really cool" moments. The last time that happened was when they started making 3-1/2" diskettes.
I could be down wit it...
The thing was, the moon buggy was churning up the fine powdery moondust whaich was contaminating their onboard bug stuff, so with some paperwork they had lying around (!) and DUCT TAPE they fixed this gizmo which kept the dust down. What do they call them on bikes, like mudguard attachments? Oh and it's here,

Duct tape happens to also have saved the lives of the Apollo 13 crew.
CO2 accumulates in the air of the space craft over time as it is breathed. The Lunar Module was the only part of the ship that was powered on for most of their trip, it was being used as a life raft of sorts. It only had supplies to keep the air fresh for a shorter period of time and for one fewer crew member than was demanded of it.
The part that needed frequent replacing was a 'scrubber' cartridge that had an active ingredient that would waste over time. The crew had plenty of cartridges to supply the Command Module (which had to remain powered down), but they were not compatible with the Lunar Module. Solution: they kludged together an adaptor using spare parts, and DUCT TAPE to hold it all together.
That was such a great movie! What a cliffhanger -- I was on the edge of my seat, wondering how it would end. ;)
I'm afraid I remember this from my childhood. It happened right before I was born, but it was STILL the talk of the house by the time I was old enough to remember and "wanna be a spaceman!"

Duct tape is a trademark? I thought it was originally 'grey tape' in the military and then they used it for heating ducts. That can't be a tradmark.
So maybe not a trademark, but the novelty of the "grey-ness" sorry bout that... :o
Actually it ranges from various shades of dull grey to shiney silver. Then you get into other colors like the military greens.:)
