The Official Cellar T-Shirt Sale

lumberjim • Mar 24, 2004 11:16 pm
Cellar T-Shirt Sale

These professionally done, quality T-Shirts are a bold fashion statement in any setting. The instantly recognizable monkey typists identify you as a Man or Woman of Letters; one of superior taste and charm. Don’t be surprised if strangers ask you for advice when you wear it. These are the first edition T-shirts with the classic “old school” logo on the front, and the speculative toad on the back. An instant collectors item, you may want to buy two or three. And priced so reasonably, that they won’t break the bank. You will also be donating a portion to the cellar and doing your part to ensure its longevity. There are a variety of styles to choose from, in sizes from XS to 4XL. Please check your style for color and size availability.

Using the order form below, copy and paste, and email or PM the order to lumberjim . Use the paypal link on the bottom of the front page to make your payment directly to the cellar. We will not order until all orders are paid. When we reach the order date, all unpaid orders will be void.

We will close ordering when it seems that all interested parties have placed their orders. You will be notified of the sale ending several days in advance..... repetitively, in increasingly annoying car commercial kinds of ways.

The first order has been recieved. Elspode. The first official future owner of the first official cellar Tshirt. What an honor.

Toad,
if I may humbly suggest that you make this thread stick for a short time so that people can find it quickly, and do not miss this unique opportunity to be part of future history.
Pi • Mar 25, 2004 1:06 am
Possible to send it abroad? How much more to pay?
Elspode • Mar 25, 2004 1:08 am
Unless it is like $100 bucks or something, I would be honored to pay for the cost of reasonable shipping to Pi. I think he's earned it.
Undertoad • Mar 25, 2004 1:43 am
"I heartily endorse this product or service."

Thanks to LJ fer gettin' it all together!

The whole thing rocks the house and of course I'll be getting a ton of these myself.

Additional funds may go to Cellar promotion via Google adwords and/or other vehicles.
wolf • Mar 25, 2004 1:51 am
I reserve the right to increase the size of my already large order before closing as I have a terrible time choosing colors ...
lumberjim • Mar 25, 2004 1:53 am
no sweat. remember, christmas is right around the corner.
Pi • Mar 25, 2004 1:20 pm
Thanks Elspode...
But I think a can manage these few exta bucks. Luckyly the dollar is quite cheap at the moment :)
BrianR • Mar 25, 2004 1:55 pm
Lemmee talk with Dagney and we'll put in one order for both of us.
jaguar • Mar 25, 2004 2:24 pm
Can we get a ballpark on shipping across the atlantic?
lumberjim • Mar 25, 2004 3:15 pm
$10
jaguar • Mar 25, 2004 3:39 pm
Bah, count me in =)
Silent • Mar 25, 2004 5:41 pm
Would it be possible (where I'm in Canada) to mark on the green customs slip you get at the P.O.:

A) Gift

B) Value under $20CAD.

???

Customs can _really_ ding us here. A buddy of mine order $30 worth of t-shirts from a place in Jersey and got dinged with $75 worth of customs fees.
lumberjim • Mar 25, 2004 5:55 pm
what, you don;t like the customs nazis pawing through your things?

yes, I am wise in the ways of shipping to canada. jinx had me shipping gifts to her canadian friends a lot last year. I'm familiar with the forms, and the amount of tape needed to keep them from snooping.

I've volunteered to assist UT in packaging and shipping these, and that's just how I planned to mark them.

I am unfamiliar with shipping to switz, belgium, scotland, aus, etc, so any pointers from those of you in those countries would be apprec.
Silent • Mar 25, 2004 6:04 pm

You can go onto the USPS website and see what forms are needed and what restrictions certain countries have.

http://ircalc.usps.gov/

You go there and enter envelope, package, post card, etc. Then select the country. If you just want to know the restrictions and custom forms needed for each country then just enter any weight. The next page will have at the bottom, links for Prohibitions, Restrictions, and Custom Forms. Click any of those to get the info you need.

Europe is generally not a problem, but if you end up mailing to some smaller country in like south america or somthing like that you might want to put something like "feminine hygiene products" on the part where you say what the box contains. Sometimes when mailing to a smaller or poorer country the people in the customs office or in the country's postal system will open the box if it looks like it might be something good, and take whatever is inside it.
BrianR • Mar 25, 2004 10:10 pm
Did I miss when the deadline for orders and payment is?

I can order four shirts now, but I won't have any cash until next week.

Just for the record, retirement sucks!

Brian
lumberjim • Mar 25, 2004 10:40 pm
no hard deadline, but i'm figuring that i'd like to have the order cashed up and sent to the printer no later than 4/15. there will be warnings if it's earlier than that, though.
dar512 • Mar 25, 2004 10:55 pm
I'd like to point out how fine the final design looks. Two thumbs way way up for the folks who contributed.

Just a quick update.

At this point we have orders for 67 shirts. The largest single one party order is 10, followed closely by and order for 8 shirts. Still plenty of time to beat those records.

I'd like to thank Zippy for sparking this idea, as well as everyone that contributed in the design process. I think we should make this the first annual tshirt. I could slip a small 2004 into the design somewhere, and we could do this every year in the spring.

tell you what, I'll give you about a year to think about it.

I think this is a great idea - we could generate a some real profit over the years for UT.

maybe we could do a line of mouse pads, bumper stickers, members only rings (that open secret dungeon doors) and temporary tatoos!!

Sun_Sparkz • Apr 6, 2004 6:58 pm
Si!!

shit from shoe polish!

but sometimes its a good thing, quite often i get a LARGER combined present :)

or sometimes i get one small combined present. :(
wolf • Apr 7, 2004 2:04 am
I won't accept the "larger combined present" scam.

My sister, whose birthday is in June, rather than two weeks post xmas gets two presents, and so should I, dammit.

(one of my friends has a 12/23 BD, her daughter's is 12/24. Two events, two presents. No questions.)

You have until the 15th to get your money to UT. Unpaid orders at that time will be dropped.

lumberjim • Apr 10, 2004 11:08 am
should be the first week in May if all goes well, rich
wolf • Apr 10, 2004 11:19 am

lumberjim • Apr 10, 2004 11:35 am

lumberjim • Apr 29, 2004 8:16 pm
sorry fo rthe delay in the reply, jag.

i spoke to george tonight, and the shirts are there, but the email i sent of the artwork never came through. He's picking up the disc with the images tomorrow, and says 2-3 weeks from there.

we lost a week waiting for a couple people to pay, and now it's the busy season....but never fear, you'll have them in time for the hot weather!
blue58 • Apr 30, 2004 1:44 pm

Undertoad • Apr 30, 2004 3:00 pm

Are you going to deposit my check? I hat it when I have a floater out there...I'm always afraid I'm going to spend the money and cause it to bounce.

I'm a terrible checking account person.

lumberjim • May 19, 2004 1:44 pm
**me too**

i spoke to george on thursday.....unfortunately it is his busiest time of year, and things are taking much longer than expected. I had hoped to have the order to him by the 15th of april, but there were a couple of delays. he did not get the artwork until the end of april. this is the time of year when the hotels and resorts all order their summer uniforms, which is the bulk of his business......he is doing this on the cheap for us, so i don;t want to lean on him at all. as i said, i will keep you posted with progress.....

perth, UT ordered some extras for slackers like you and sycamore. pm him once i announce that we have them, and we;ll get you in on it.....btw, all of the extras are black short sleeve tees.

jag, everyone,

there were some color/size conflicts. i had asked and been assured a month ago that the order was fine. so now i'm dealing with the person that runs the production facility and just got off the phone with her confirming the final changes ( there were 4 that I had to get second choices for) and she says production should happen this week, but I am hesitant to promise anything i can't control. keep your fingers crossed. i'll get them out as soon as i can manage once they're done.

again, thank you all for your patience. i'm sure they will be worth the wait.

It's too bad you're so far away. I'm wearing mine to Plastic Forks, or I will be changing into mine when the sun goes down. We'll be wearing our shirts, eating burgers and bangers on the barbie (my attempt at Aussie talk), and having a great time.

I'll be posting pictures next week.

There are a few.

1) Drunk people shall not annoy the horses. They are more valuable than you are. You may look at them.

2) Please attempt to refrain from becoming naked before dark. There didn't used to be neighbors. Civilization has been impinging on the property over about the last five years.

3) Do not kill or attempt to kill any other guests or residents of the property. You will not be invited back.

4) Wolf will wear a shirt containing a picture of a moose. She will also bring her own mug.

These simple rules have withstood the test of time.
wolf • Jun 24, 2004 10:55 am
Oh, I forgot one ...

5) It is not necessary to disassemble the bathroom doorknob to gain egress.

See you all Saturday afternoon.

Well, here's a satellite picture. I hope I got the right house. This is why I would never have made it as a photo recon officer. They would probably ask me to target Bin Laden in Afghanistan and I would end up demolishing a Dairy Queen in Newark.

I'm pretty sure the house is right because the roof shouldn't have been as reflective as the other house and there was no porch.

Not your fault, but if your friend has a computer, point him to this thread so I can show him this :flipbird: .

he's had a link to this thread from the very beginning. he's really a nice guy, but i'm dissapointed that he didnt take more care in insuring that this went smoothly. he says that every year one of his orders is a complete abortion. guess who won that title this year?

Yeah, don't pick on the poor guy, when Jim talked him into this he probably didn't know he was going to have to print seventy eleven different shirts. Let's blame Jim, shoot the messenger.:haha:
Just kidding, you done good, Jim. Now you know what a pain in the ass doing something like this is.:)

Finished a very demanding course on Friday.
Broke my ankle Saturday.
Kicked off my ship (Navy) Monday.
All perks and associated higher pay to cease Thursday.
My dog glares at me all day for not walking him.
The simplest things are not.
Day time TV sucks.
These shirts are fast shaping up as the only highlight in an otherwise miserable time.
Oh, yes, I am a sook.

Novice, please explain more fully and this time try to use complete sentences.

As the resident Navy vet, I'm interested.

Nighttime TV sucks too, for the most part. Especially during the summer repeat season.

That is why videotape, DVDs and (insert gaming platform of choice) were invented.

Although one of our ambulance crew members while sidelined with a broken leg, claimed to have played and beaten "all" of the good PS2 games and quite a few of the bad ones.

I know I sure as hell won't.
It's pretty straightforward BrianR. I was acting the goat with some mates in my own backyard (drinking) and tried to sidestep a tackle. Nah.
Because it happenned at home the Navy is no longer obliged to keep me on the ship as an active crew member. There's a considerable decrease in salary for a shore position, hence my grief causing through gritted teeth staccatto typing. Oh, and the pain.
I can't drive ( right ankle ) so no video shop access leaves me enduring a myriad of talk/freak shows and general blather.
I'm bored, sore and miserable so anything to relieve the monogamy will be truly welcome, with LJ's efforts as a case in point. Cheers for all the hard work.

They didn't take you to Captain's Mast?

Edit: Oops, wrong navy, but do you guys have something similiar?
BrianR • Jun 30, 2004 12:07 pm
Sorry to hear that Novice.

But this is only temporary, right? Your ankle will heal in a few weks and as soon as the docs clear you for sea duty, you're back on a ship again. Perhaps not the same one, but sea duty is sea duty, right? Hang in there!

Troubleshooter: The US Navy won't send you to Captains Mast for an accident as long as you were not violating regulations at the time (ie DUI). Accidents happen. I know of a man who broke his leg (coincidentally) the day before a deployment. He was sent to shore duty with no punishment, although it was (common) knowledge that he did it on purpose to get out of going.

Tell that to the guys I watched get masted for sunburns that wouldn't let them stand watch.

That was back in '89, '90 though.

Thanks UT but I can't find a similar critter here in Oz. As for a Captains Mast, we are sent to the Captains Table for re-indoctrination. Yours sounds like some kind of ordeal. " Climb up here boy and meet your fate"
We too would be punished for sunburn. We're provided with hats ans 30+ gratis so there is no excuse. They are not so Draconian as to refuse belief in accidents. Generally it comes down to the past record and temperament of the victim.
Being older and having never been caught at nefarious practises I am accorded a measure of respect from the heirachy.

It's called Captain's Mast because the court was held at the main mast of the sailing vessels. :)

It was only really a problem where I was stationed in California, guys would get so sunburned that they had to be put on bed rest. The CO didn't like that at all. He said they should have known better since they had seen it happen to other guys, so he dropped the hammer on them.

They actually arrived while I was away on July um...7th, which is really good considering it is holiday time and lotsa postal workers are on a beach in Spain leaving delivery to students. Too much info there but hey ho. They are ginormous which is great because a shirt with collar will go nicely under, and have interestingly long arms..... Hmmmm.

One for me and one for my stepson who is a techie with a shirt to die for, so its off to the pub for us tonight to await massive compliments to go with lots of free drink :guinness: Was there enough cash? I have Pay pal now so could top it up if required?? Let me know, and thank you again.

my thoughts exactly.

That's awful, the word you're looking for is snags, bangers is a pommy term.

Well, it's a slow day and I've finally had time for my favorite pastime, which is fact-checking, trivia-searching on the Internet. I was curious about the 'pommy' term. I understood that it meant 'British', but I could not figure out why. My first thought was pomegranate, but I couldn't figure out what that had to do with 'British'. Lime juice for preventing scurvy and 'Limey' were something I guessed at a while back.

POM
[Q] From Rosemary Wetherall: “Is pom short for Port of Melbourne (where the ships docked), Prisoners Of her Majesty, as they were convict ships, or did we all really look like a cargo of pomegranates when we caught the sun? Or is it simply rhyming slang for immigrant?”
[A] You’ve done a great job of listing many of the explanations that one comes across for the origin of this Australian term for British immigrants. You could have added a possible derivation from the common naval slang term for Portsmouth, Pompey, or from pommes de terres for potatoes, much eaten by British troops in World War One, or an abbreviation for Permit of Migration. All of them except your last two, I have to tell you, are folk etymology (which, for some reason I’ve never understood, loves to invent origins based on acronyms).
Part of the reason for all these theories growing up is that there was for decades much doubt over the true origin of the expression, with various Oxford dictionaries, for example, continuing to say that there is no firm evidence for the pomegranate theory. That origin was described by D H Lawrence in his Kangaroo of 1923: “Pommy is supposed to be short for pomegranate. Pomegranate, pronounced invariably pommygranate, is a near enough rhyme to immigrant, in a naturally rhyming country. Furthermore, immigrants are known in their first months, before their blood ‘thins down’, by their round and ruddy cheeks. So we are told”. You will note that he had to explain the pronunciation that we would now take to be the usual one: in standard English it used not to have the first “e” sounded, with pome often rhyming with home.
It is now pretty well accepted that the pomegranate theory is close to the truth, though there’s a slight twist to take note of. H J Rumsey wrote about it in 1920 in the introduction to his book The Pommies, or New Chums in Australia. He suggested that the word began life on the wharves in Melbourne as a form of rhyming slang. An immigrant was at first called a Jimmy Grant (was there perhaps a famous real person by that name around at the time?), but over time this shifted to Pommy Grant, perhaps as a reference to pomegranate, because the new chums did burn in the sun. Later pommy became a word on its own and was frequently abbreviated still further. The pomegranate theory was also given some years earlier in The Anzac Book of 1916.
Whatever your beliefs about this one, what seems to be true is that the term is not especially old, dating from the end of the nineteenth century at the earliest, certainly not so far back as convict ship days.

I've noticed myself that when I sit up here in Manitou in my little cottage, large entourages of new friends and aquaintances do not exactly beat a path to my door. On Friday and Saturday nights you can basicly float down Tejon Street on a river of liquid courage all the way from Tony's to Southside Johnnie's and beyond. I told my friend about you and she seemed interested. I've been trying to get her to join the cellar for ages. Maybe she'll show up down here someday or maybe we'll spot you downtown in your T-shirt. dude - don't you know that going to a movie alone is a good way to meet someone? all you have to do is pick a movie that females are likely to see together and when you see a couple of women without men you strike up a conversation with the less attractive of the two. (not insinuating that either is unattractive but female friends are very used to idiot guys hitting on the "hot one" and they'll dismiss you) just be honest and let her know that you were interested in seeing the movie but none of your friends wanted to go. just be conversational and there is the strong likelihood that if they think you are sincere they will invite you to sit with them. remember they are friends, not dates. chances are that if none is interested in you they will still like you and hook you up with one of their friends. referrals are always the best.

...and if you really want to be taken for a pussy you should not miss The View ever. Seriously 123, perth is a sweet decent guy, we need non-deceptive ways to hook him up. He's the real deal.

Birthdays come and go.............so fast. I spent my last one watching movies. Sorry about the subject change.....Hey M- where in the heck ARE you?If I could find her I would invite her to the movies with P. ;)

i didn't suggest anything that was deceptive. i suggested something that takes some serious brass ones because you are walking up to people you don't know and being completely honest about the fact that you are looking for a friend to watch a movie with.
Clodfobble • Sep 10, 2004 9:36 pm
I think the deceptive part was pretending he'd ever want to go see a chick flick. :)

Well, if you'd ever get off the damn computer long enough, you might get phone calls from your friends. :eyebrow: No T-shirt for you until you make 100 posts or at least get going on that protest march of yours.

Although if I have my Cellar Trivia straight, HP and Brig met that way, and they seem like quite the happy couple.

You do indeed have your cellar trivia correct. We met through Match.com. We just had an anniversary a few weeks back. I met a few duds through Match.com and the Yahoo personals before HP but none were scary, they just didn't click well with me in person. Match.com is nice because you can tell it all these search criteria (IE: Views on Religion, Kids, pets, etc) and it will only send you the profiles of the people that fit into the criteria you are looking for. At least that was how they did it a few years ago when I was on it. It might have changed some but probably not much.

As an interesting side note (at least to some) my mom also met someone on Match.com. She decided to give it a try after I had gone out on some dates with guys I had met through it. She has a nice gentleman friend to do stuff with now (and she went out with about 4 or 5 people but none of them clicked like this guy). Neither one is looking for a spouse or committed relationship, they just wanted someone to be able to go to dinner or movies and other activities with. They have been doing stuff with each other for a couple years now and both seem to enjoy the companionship. I only mention that as it might be good for you to find a "friend" to go do stuff with, just to help get you back out and doing things.

I also can offer a testimonial in that regard, with the caveat that you do have to engage in some very careful screening ...

perth, if the approaching two women in a dark movie theater is not your bag, you could try the popcorn tub with the hole in the bottom trick?

just remember that it is like sales. it's a numbers game. ask out everyone you think you might like to go out with. especially the really hot ones. one of them will eventually say yes, it will get easier to ask, etc. you're cool, you'll find a woman.
OnyxCougar • Sep 20, 2004 8:41 am
Is this a good time to bring up that I haven't received my two other shirts yet? And my address has changed, so PM me when they are ready, please! :)
Undertoad • Sep 20, 2004 8:44 am
It's up to whether LJ's T-shirt guy EVER gets back to us! At some point refunds will be in order!
OnyxCougar • Sep 20, 2004 8:52 am
OK, T, no problem, just wondering.... I'm giving the shirt I ordered to my daughter so she can be the coolest girl in Shreveport! This means I don't have one, and I really wanna wear one to work....
LabRat • Sep 20, 2004 12:35 pm
What is the status on any leftover shirts for those of us potentially interested? thanks.
Undertoad • Sep 20, 2004 12:44 pm
I have a bunch of extra black shirts, but we should wait for the final word on whether the remaining order will be filled.
lookout123 • Sep 20, 2004 1:14 pm
let us know, i'd be interested in a shirt.
Elspode • Sep 20, 2004 8:03 pm
Any hope for Selene and my shirts? If it is going to be a major problem, don't go googoo trying to do anything about it. The Cellar is worth the price of the shirts any day.
lumberjim • Sep 20, 2004 10:17 pm
i have given up. sorry, but i dont have the time to deal with it at this point. i have given tony the printer's contact info, and dumped the whole thing uncerimoniously into his lap (sorry, tony). sorry everyone that got let down. i'd advise that UT give the fuckees first dibs on what he has in stock. $.02

I wore my tshirt to the pub (= bar) this weekend and it generated two comments ("What's that about, then?").
I'm looking forward to the day when a stranger in my local taps me on the shoulder and says ... "You're a dwellar too?".
wolf • Oct 2, 2004 12:04 am
We had a lovely little cluster at The Point tonight ... I wore mine "just because" ... I hadn't gotten the official memo.

Of course, "Just Because" also translates to "I'm a professional psychic, and I caught the energy."

Lemme tell you, we looked REALLY cool.
zippyt • Oct 30, 2004 12:11 am
UT ,
Dude we are STILL short 2 royal blue short sleve large shirts , my wife will settle for 2 black large short sleve shirts .

I am starting to send out black shirts to make up for the missing ones... Zip has just reserved his two, who else wants black replacements and who wants a refund?

xoxoxoBruce • Oct 30, 2004 6:13 pm
Rich, I'll bet you could wear a 2xl, they're super big. :)
wolf • Oct 30, 2004 11:42 pm
After everybody is taken care of, I might want in on another one or two ...
lookout123 • Oct 31, 2004 12:09 am
after all the prepaid folks are satisfied i would also like a crack at one.
Elspode • Oct 31, 2004 10:14 am
I would take a black 2X as a makeup, but I do not want a refund in any event, shirt or no shirt.
flippant • Nov 16, 2004 11:20 pm
Hi I like this place....I would like to get one for myself and possibly Mari. (if she's good) Can you notify me on the details if/when shirts are available?

No, I keep them warm and moist.

DucksNuts • May 12, 2006 9:52 pm
