3/8/2004: Three-headed frog

Lurker Yellowbolt passes this along. At first the staff of the children's nursery thought it was three frogs huddled closely together. Then they looked a little closer, and they realized...

Image

It was actually one big frog with three heads and six legs.

Wow. I can't imagine the odds against that happening.
lumberjim • Mar 8, 2004 12:38 pm
I think you'd have to say that it IS 3 frogs, that are conjoined, not one frog with 6 legs, 3 heads, etc.

when will people learn not to cross-breed frogs with crazy glue?
Beestie • Mar 8, 2004 12:40 pm
Holy Crap! I think we may have just found the WMD!

:D

The apparent mutation rates in amphibious species have been alarming ecologists for several years now. What part of the world was this poor creature found in?
jaguar • Mar 8, 2004 1:43 pm
Don't ask me but I don't wnat to see pics of the kids from the same area.
DDT sure doesn't harm the environment does it.
Undertoad • Mar 8, 2004 2:05 pm
This one was in Britain somewhere.
MachineyBear • Mar 8, 2004 3:27 pm

Who says this monster is the result of DDT?
CzinZumerzet • Mar 8, 2004 5:47 pm
Is this strange? I live in the village where the tripartite frogs were found and they are not so uncommon here, not everyday you understand but this is not unique. The local kids catch 'em, feed 'em and let 'm go which was excatly what they did with these.

They hopped off into the undergrowth and best of luck to 'em.It's the tadpoles you should get a glimpse of...they are nature gone awry in a seriously disturbing way. Is it stream water? The nuclear power plant, the GM stuff growing in the meadow draining into the stream, all around here or the flight paths we now live under. Pays our money - takes our choice - and the frogs die. :violin: We sleep on while the population quietly dies out all around, the irony being, the planet can and will go on living live without us. Will six headed babies be next?

I believe the reference was to Total Recall, starring The Governator.

should've used pesticides instead of DDT, my fault. These things do very occasionally naturally but in recent years there has been a massive increase in amphibian mutations which has been directly attributed to chemical pollutants (primarily farm runoff) into water systems.
staceyv • Mar 9, 2004 2:22 pm
am i the only one here who thinks this is sad and feels sorry for the frog(s)?
lumberjim • Mar 9, 2004 2:26 pm
yup
headsplice • Mar 9, 2004 2:27 pm
Do(es) the frog(s) know any better?
glatt • Mar 9, 2004 2:45 pm

Hell no. Lucky ass frog can eat with one mouth, burp with another and lick his nads with the third. Sheesh.

I thought I read recently they discovered the the mutating amphibians (at least in the US) was some kind of virus.

staceyv • Mar 10, 2004 10:09 am
well, it's a new day, yet, no image of the day is here. i tried to post one, but i don't have permission to start a new thread on the images forum. oh well. maybe tomorrow we'll have an "image of the day".
lumberjim • Mar 10, 2004 10:29 am
patience, grasshopper. Toad gets to it when he gets to it. usually in the early afternoon. If you have a photo that you think is worthy, email it to him.
noodles • Mar 10, 2004 12:23 pm
three heads are better than one, and nowhere is more true than in the world of frogs.

question:granted that a two-headed frog is more than a frog; what about a two-headed man, is he more than or less than a man?
lumberjim • Mar 10, 2004 1:14 pm
dont we all have 2 already? well, except john bobbit.....

I think that first picture was the cover of Three Frog Night's first album, wasn;t it? ya, know the one with "Jeremiah was a bullfrogs" on it?

JEREMIAH was a bulfrogs!
dant dant dant!
WAS A good friends of mine!

NEver understood a single word they said,
But we sure had a real good time!

Clodfobble • Mar 12, 2004 11:02 am
um... I believe you mean...

"But I helped them drink their wine."

And perhaps the wine is their problem--these frogs have fetal alcohol syndrome!
lumberjim • Mar 12, 2004 11:36 am
yeah, that's it. you must have the album. thanks

No, I think it was a transporter malfunction. We have transporters, don't we? This sort of thing is pretty common with the ones that run Windows, especially if Solitaire is running at the same time.
Slartibartfast • Mar 17, 2004 1:44 pm
Could it be the british government making cutbacks?

You know, they say they can't afford so many frogs on the payroll, so they start hiring three headed frogs. Three times the croak per unit.

Think of the savings!
Undertoad • Mar 20, 2004 10:19 am
Uh-oh, burned again! The above is NOT a three headed frog. It's a frog gang-bang.

Hmmm, ok. This guy has presented a thoughtful, rational article on why he doesn't believe it. But, he's working with photographs and never saw or handled the critter. So he may be right but can never be sure.

I knew all along that sex had something to do with it...
