Jack Chick is the gold standard of religious tracts.

Clever, keeps to bible teachings, creates 'reality' as necessary. (such as 'when your character gets to be 8th level, you can really cast spells' kind of stuff ...)

Many of his "the other religions are false" tracts make good reading, like Allah Had No Son and The Curse of Baphomet.

One wonders, though ... which online version of the Bible is the correct one? Of course Mr. Chick insists that it's the King James, but would a modern Jesus prefer one of the hipper, newer, improved, Mother-Father kinds of bibles, or none of them, knowing that the message is lost in the (re)telling, but gained in the living?

Heard at a pagan gathering: "Believe in the Bible? Well, at least I've seen one ... "

And just for fun, found the Extreme Teen Bible while looking for examples ... layout almost looks like "The Bible for Dummies" or "for the Complete Idiot."

I guess today's tv raised kids don't have the attention span for regular old bible reading.

There is no such thing as a perfect translation. However, there are several good english translations out there.

I would avoid translations into simple english, or easy reading versions, as what happens there is that the translator gives you the gist of the original, but you lose double and triple meanings, subtle word play, and detail.

Some Jewish groups make everyone learn Hebrew so that they can read their texts in the original language. Christian scholars have to learn those langauges too, or else they are forever at the mercy of the translators.

The one true Bible is the D&D first edition Dungeon Master's Guide and Player's Handbook. All other versions were written by heretics trying to rewrite the rules.

As a member of the gaming community for over 20 years now, I've always found things like that to be hilarious.

It reminds me of one year at summer camp, must have been 1978 or 79 because Star Wars was relatively new, one of the other guys said his mom had attended an exorcism, and when the demon was cast out, it looked just like Darth Vader did at the end of Star Wars when his ship was spinning out of control right befor the Death Star blew.

The rest of us were going.... "Umm. Right. OK."

heh whilst cleaning out a closet I ran across.. oh geez all my 1st and second edition books, about 40 modules (all the old school stuff.. b series (WOO! keep on the borderlands!)G series, S sreies (damn that tomb of horrors!), D series.. and the thing is I now have a serious hankerin' to round up some of my old D&D buddies and get a game on!

and as to the re-writes being by heretics? oh yeah, I've been in an arguement with some people I know who still play and they are all ga-ga over the new 3.5 edition rules, my contention is that the whole system is slipping back toward the Basic rules editions and where Gygax tried to make it a more 'real' system this stuff is pulling back towards the 'fantasy' angle of the game.. which.. pffth! no thanks.
