The Compliment Thread

lumberjim • Dec 12, 2003 9:33 am
I'm setting this up to have a place where you can formally register a compliment about another member of the cellar.

if we could avoid thread drift and sarcasm here, it will work a lot better

you don't have to think of something nice to say about everyone and list it all at once, i was thinking something more like: when you are impressed by someone, you come over here, make the persons name the topic of the post, and put down what it is that impressed you. Also, it isn't neccessary to reply to a post unless you have something to ad, or a seperate instance of how you were impressed by that person. (I don't think rebuttals or arguments would be useful) we will assume that the posts herein are the opinion of the post-er, and don't represent fact, and therefore should not be argued against.

Grow up? Who wants to grow up?

I'd like to compliment UnderToad for encouraging me to check out the wild, wacky, and mega-timewasting world of blogs.

I would just like to thank all who took part in the second part of the "Strawberry Thread".
The banter about what colour to post replies in was the funniest thing I've read for weeks.
It was a Hoot.

Shame about the wee Hampster though.

yeah. damn. I was remiss in not immediatley taking the time to give toad a :thumb: for a few things:

1. hosting the site in the first place
2. maintaning the IOTD thread
3. walking the line between mod and member
4. being generally wise and positive

good job, Tony. It means a lot to a lot of people.

but personally, when I am not wielding my knife as a weapon, I have little sympathy for someone who chooses to fling themselves into it.

Someone who takes offense when it is not intended is a fool. Someone who takes offense when it is intended is seven times a fool.

two seperate sagacious quotes in one thread. impressive.

I don't think your poetry is a material item. It's a lot more than the paper and ink (or electrons and bytes), if your know what I mean.

Not unless Gwen Stefani has decided to start hanging out here.

Which [dead kitten] would be fine [/dead kitten] :)

But, getting back on topic, first I'd like to thank UT for hosting such an awesome place and for being a kind and benevolent mod who allows Cellarites to be themselves.

Many of the good Cellarites have already been acknowledged so I'll give a shout out to insoluble and FileNotFound. Smart folk. I disagree with them sometimes and let them know on occasion but they aren't thin-skinned and aren't afraid to step up to the plate and disagree in a civilized manner. I respect that and appreciate it.

And I think lj has added quite a bit to the forum since he has joined.

And to dave. I thought you were far to mean-spirited on occasion but there was a method to your madness - one that I admired.

On the NoDoubt.com fan forum, Gwen Stefani started posting, everyone thought she was a troll and gave her a hard time. At one point she said "I'm exhausted from being doubted." Finally, she put up a notice on the NoDoubt.com home page that it was really her in the forum. But, by then, she was tired of the whole thing and stopped posting. She was kind of naiive about forums. It was pretty funny to see it unfold.

Everyone except the people I don't like, but I can't think of anyone who's stayed in that catagory for more than a few minutes.
So everyone, for contributing, which is what makes the Cellar possible in the first place. And secondly for being civil which makes it fun.
Of course UT, for making it physically(electrically?) possible.

People that I love and respect:

Tony - its obvious why. He's just the shiz nitz.
Onyx - because she's just about the nicest person and is so cute!!!
Elpsode - for his strength and humor in trying stressful times.
Lumberjim - for adding hilarity in very uncomfortable situations
Bruce - cause he's just that damn funny. And all the doodadage of course.

Undertoad for creating the Cellar. This is the best place I've found in a LONG time.

Onyx for her no-nonsense, straightforward plain talk.

LadySycamore for her humor and thought-provoking insights

lumberjim for being open to ideas and giving them a fair hearing.

And for everyone else who has made me feel welcome here. Thanks. I love this place!

Here's why I appreciate Juju (even if I don't frequently agree with him). He's one of the few people, even in this wonderful crowd, who will post an opinion and allow himself to gasp! change his mind or admit that he's learned something new.

This is a rare trait, and a welcome relief from long, whiny threads where the originator asks for advice and then proceeds to rebuff all attempts at supplying it.

Thanks Juju, for reaffirming my hope that we really can learn and grow. :)

Heheh... I never saw Juju's compliment until this very moment. DanaC because she realizes quality when she sees it ;) and also writes some extremely intelligent posts; Jaguar because he is too cool for words, but writes them, anyhow; LJ because he's funny and contributes so much to the cellar; Lady Sycamore because of her passion and wit; xoxoxoBruce because is generally level headed, amusing and kind.
jaguar • May 24, 2004 2:19 pm
I knew all this place needed was a group hug.

marichiko for being deeply cool, DanaC for enlightening discussions of controlled substances, Wolf for being able to see a bit further than people`s political allignments, Syc for still being here, UT for paying for everything, LJ for being the self appointed village idiot (in a good way), Slang was cool but doesn`t seem to be around much anymore. xoxoxoBruce for the very cool dodads and enlightening anecdotes. At the end of the day I have a wider POV than I would if I had never come here and for that, I`m glad (avoids comments about looking into the abyss).

Like syc I`ve been here long enough to see people come and people go, I`ve seen plenty of stupid spats but many interesting and adult debates as well, in this day and age a free-for-all of ideas like this place is a very positive force in a world dominated by one-way media that has no interest in challanging our preconceptions.

On the MIA and missed list are Nic Name and Xumagad, who IMHO made the best argued posts here, JuJu was cool too but seems to live on his own board now.

Holy shit...is that you, Cam?
cam2 • Oct 4, 2004 5:27 pm
Yeah, I'm back. Thought I'd change my username since I took such a long break from this place. Well not so much change it as just sticking a 2 behind it to let everyone who knew me from before know this is my second appearance. It's nice to be back, a lot of changes, but it's still the cellar. UT, props to the new version of vbBulletin, it rocks (though I liked the older visual style better, the new features definitely outweigh that). It's also nice to see you're still around syc. The place has a lot of new faces, but from what I've had a chance to read in the past couple days I can tell the majority of them are a perfect fit for the place. Well I guess I should go meander around the place some more. I haven't been in a good friendly argument/debate in a while.
Roosta • Oct 6, 2004 7:31 pm
I think everyone should get an old pat on the back! It's not often you can find a place on the net that has good conversation, cool pics and you can learn stuff as well without all the crappy arguing. I don't normally do a lot of posting anywhere. Cellar has changed my opinion on forums. Cheers, you lot!!

Hmmm... That means I'd either have to fight you or Onyx and I know either one of you could whoop the hell outta me. Tell you what, I'll compromise and take Smoothmoniker. He may be a tad young for me, but he DID offer me a ride in his hummer limo! That would work. ;)

I originally decided to jump in and join the cellar to give you guys thanks, but I felt it was sort of attention whorish to make a whole thread dedicated to it so this thread is perfect!

As I stated in my other post (which I am sure not all of you read) I have been lurking here for quite some time, in the past I've popped in and out of the cellar reading all of your interesting and often amusing posts usually when I was bored or upset. In November I ended a four year relationship with a very yucky person. This wouldn't have been a problem except that I was very not used to being alone and needed the comfort of people around me, discussing things that didn't have anything to do with my previous relationship or any possible future ones. I was on the cellar every day floating amongst your posts and reading the stories of your lives. Although you don't know me, I want to thank you all for really helping me through a couple of rough times by just getting my mind off of things for a bit. I have a habit of reading through forums without looking at the names of those who post but the ones that I always remember when I come back to the cellar are these:
Undertoad (obvious reasons), lumberjim, Spexxvet, Onyx, wolf, Happy Monkey, sycamore and ladysycamore, marichiko, jaguar, Briana, DucksNuts, Bruce, Sawnee123, Elpsode, and DanaC...so thanks to you guys particularly for brightening my day...and my apologies for any misspellings.

An extra special thanks to wolf for being such a strong woman, I look up to you a lot.

Man...I hope none of you guys are creeped out by this...

Shawnee123 • Aug 16, 2007 3:48 pm
reminds me of a joke:

Man is riding the bus. There is an old lady with an umbrella sitting across the aisle. Every now and then, the bus driver looks in his big rearview mirror, puts his hand around his throat, and makes gurgly noises. Each time, the little old lady gets out of her seat, hits the driver over the head with the umbrella, and goes to sit back down. This goes on for a few stops. The lady finally disembarks. The man can't stand his curiosity, so he moves up front and says to the driver "what in the world was going on with you and that old lady?" The driver replies "Oh, her daughter got strangled to death last week and I like to tease her about it."

I think we should give the mods a big round of applause for not gettin in everyone's face.

I occasionally frequent a couple of other forums, mainly political or gaming in nature. One in particular seems to have very trigger happy mods and a rather disturbing Yellow Card/Red Card system. When I say trigger happy, I mean mods posting in a thread to warn people that it's drifted off topic, or locking it because people were getting personal.

So, big round of applause for the mods for being mainly unnoticed.
